My 16 month old son has taken to picking up his plate and throwing his food on the floor at mealtimes. I'm at a loss as to what to do to stop him doing this. Has any one else experienced this with their little un's or have any suggestions on how to discourage him from doing this.

Thanks x

I always put food straight on the tray! We didn't start using plates until recently prolly last few weeks, my daughters a year. Even at restaurants, I just brought antibacerial wipes and scrubbed the table down before she ate. My daughter now just lifts the plate when she's done eating, I am trying to get her to say done, but since she only says two words I might be pushing it :)

There may well be some good suction plates, but the ones we tried were useless. We ended up taking them back to the shop.

It'd be useful to know if anyone has found any suction plates that do work............

Think I might try putting the food direcly onto the tray though x

Good to know about the suction plates! I guess I won't bother with them. My daughter rarely throws things, and we feed her directly on the tray... I never really thought of not doing it that way I guess.

Thanks for the responses!!!

We've tried the suction plates and he just pulls them off the high chair and still chucks it on the floor.

He's not even started eating sometimes before he throws the plate, and I don't fill his plate up too much anymore as it seems to be a waste of food. I've also given him little sandwiches on a coffee table in our front room and they just get thrown.

I've actually thought about putting his food directly on to the tray but I was worried that I would then start teaching him bad habits.

No one tells you how hard it is to deal with these little every day issues when you become a parent :o)

take it away from them. i call it the lets ee how many times youll pick it up for me game! i have also had them clean it up. im not mean like im going to let them go hungry just take it away for a bit and explain to him why you are doing it. give him a min and give it back if he does it again he obviously is either not hungry or just acting out. also those plates are great plates. i have just experienced it being a "game" they play or not being hungry.

My 10 month old does this too....I just started putting his food right on the tray of his highchair, lol. I tried those suction plates and as soon as he got ahold of the plate and couldn't lift it he would throw a fit, lol.

I'd say that at one point, all kids throw their food when they are done eating. Perhaps he is getting too much at one time on the plate, and when he is done, he doesn;t know what else to do with the plate. Another trick I saw my friend so is spread out a picnic blanket right on the kitchen floor, and she & her son ate on the floor for awhile. Her son hated being restrained in the high chair so much, and this little trick worked for her. Good luck!

They sell plates at Target, and probably elsewhere, that have suction on the bottom. I know the ones at target come in a little set with silverware too for $6. I would recommend giving that a try.
