Thrush! My son is almost 4 months old and he has thrush again!!! We've been through 2 bottles of Nystatin (sp?) and 2 rounds of gentain violet, we are now on our 3rd round. Any advice besides, boiling nuks, washing my nipples and applying nystatin cream? Why does this keep coming back?

My pediatrician said to let the nipples, pacifiers etc soak in 1/2 vinegar and 1/2 water for about 20 minutes once a week and that would kill off thrush. Good luck!

GIVE HIM JUST A SMALL AMOUNT OF PLAIN YOGURT. I HAD TO DO THIS WITH MY DAUGHTER AT ABOUT THE SAME AGE. AND IT WORKED.

I just used plain unsweetened yogurt and rubbed it all over my daughters mouth. I did this at least 3 times a day until it was gone.

Fluconazole is the best medicine for thrush. Both of my boys got thrush numerous times. It stopped around 5.5 months. The doctor started us on Nystatin and when that didn't work he put them on Fluconazole. I think Nystatin is the first thing most doctors prescribe. Our doctor said that Fluconazole is the "Cadillac" of thursh meds!! Hope this helps.

I had this problem when nursing my son but it was from me & I kept transfering it to him. I had to use the drops they give for him on my breast. & this took care of it!!!!

Check at a health store for natural remedies that actually take of the yeast.  Valley Natural is great!

I used Ori-Thrush on my son but he was older and I found that it did hurt cause the thrush is a scab and pulling it off will cause bleeding and if there is sugar in the saliva it will just cause more problems and the ori--thrush tastes nasty so if there is a really small baby I would go with the gentian violet and the nystatin, the clove oil is good too cause it is numbing even for teething... and you can use Hylands teething tablets for the pain too of the thrush... sorry hun i know this is killin you...

Try taking taking a garlic pill a day. It is supposed to keep down on yeast in your body. I had trouble with it with my second child, and started taking it and it helped.

Good call... I totally forgot about this...

Hi--antibiotics CAUSE thrush--as they kill the healthy bacteria in the body. Antibiotics ALSO weaken the immune system. You can verify this into by googling antibiotics and immune system or antibiotics and yeast.

I had antibiotics during the birth of my daughter, and she had thrush. You will need acidophilus (sp?) from your local health food store. The more strains it has, the better it is and the more expensive. If you buy the kind that is in the cooler, it's better. You will need to take it as directed and open the capsuls and feed 1/4 to your baby a few times per day. It doesn't taste bad and will solve both of your problems. Acidophilus will replace the healthy bacteria the antibiotic has killed and eliminate yeast overgrowth. Also, sugar in your diet can increase yeast overgrowth in your body.

Hope this helps! I PROMISE it'll solve your problem. :-)

Nystatin and Diflucan for you and plain yogurt with active cultures also vanilla has more sugar and the flavored ones have too much extra sugar. You need to be checked for possibility that you are diabetic and therefore having problems with sugars converting to yeast. Get yourself away from "white" foods. They tend to contain elements that convert to sugars faster and feed the yeast. Instead fresh veggies and fruits, Whole wheat items but even go lightly on those. Healthy proteins, lean meat, toasted nuts. Garlic while it may work can cause baby to not want to nurse. You exercise to the extent that you can to better tolerate sugars and to again not feed the yeasts.

when applying the nystatin cream I was told to swab it with a q tip. cause if it is just squirted in the mouth it does not as much good, and to do it every hour since they are not getting so much and it has numbing clove oil in it...

I would consider what could be causeing such a yeast reaction, what are you eating, since he is breast feeding I would totally go on a yeast free diet, and take tea tree oil capsules to kill any yeast that I was carrying... I know how hard this is I have done it... but love the effects that I see now in me... has he been on antibiotics... it will take a good three months to get back the natural flora that is needed in his body to balance the yeasts... you can put a little in his mouth of the probiotics when he is sucking nuks and he will get it... prob one capsul a day would be sufficiant for a baby... hope this helps...

My daughter and I also had issues with this. We went through several rounds of nystatin and diflucan, the creams, the boiling, you name it. The only thing I have to add is that I swabbed myself with vinegar after breastfeeding her, and when I boiled her binkies and nipples I added vinegar, and boiled them for like 20 MINUTES. Hopefully your little one's mouth will just start to clear up on its own, just like mine did (around 4 months).

He needs an antibiotic to clear everything.  I also tried everyhting and until I gave him an antibiotic anything  else didn't work.

my suggestion is to make sure that after he is done eating to take a face cloth and wet it and let him suck the water off it. it will help keep his mouth clean and it rly does help prevent thrush :)

I agree with many of the above, but I have to add that you must get rid of the pacifier if you have one, it is never sterilized completely so you need to get replace it. It is a wise idea to replace the nipples, if you are bottle feeding once you begin treatment. Like others said, you must treat yourself and your son at the same time. Hope things get better soon!

I battled thrush with both my boys.  For us the fluconazole worked, but I also used acidophilus tablets which I took, and put the powder infant acidophilus in bottles. The powder can also be put in the baby's mouth on the end of your finger if they don't drink from bottles.....

Definately get yourself treated if you're still Breast feeding. If that's the case, your son will continue to get it because you're passing it onto him. You need to get some oral antibiotics, like Nystatin or Mycostatin. Your doctor should be giving this to you, especially now that you're going on round three. ( I'm a nurse, and worked directly with infants for two years...)

try eating yogurt everyday. I normally have a Kefir (kind of like sour cream but has lots of live cultures) and yogurt smoothie for breakfast. It prevents yeast infection and helps to prevent illness.

Getting yourslf treated is good advice. Also, yeast thrives on sugar -- you will find that cutting down on (or cutting out) foods high in sugar (you can find lists of high glycemic index foods through google), will decrease frequency/severity of the thrush. Hard to do, but very effective!

My son battled this too caused by many ear infections and lots of antibiotics which upsets the balance of yeast and bacteria. We finally did gentian violet nearly daily for a week which kicked it. You may also consider a probiotic, like Culturelle. You can break open the capsule and add it to milk or juice. Good luck!

I sorry that you are going through this.

If you are nursing you need to be treated as well.  You should be on 2 treatments of diflucan.  Yeast infections come from the inside out.  You need to get better b4 your baby can get better.  Hope this helps!!

This may seem disgusting but it really works. Take one of your son's peepee diapers dab it with a moist rag and apply the rag to his tongue. Keep his tongue clean becaus ethe build up of milk on his togue causes bacteria to linger. Its an oldwives tale but I did it for my son.

my doctor gave us fluconazole and it cleared everything right up. hope this helps. also I've never tried this but a mother once told me to buy plain yogurt and stick it in the babies mouth. She said it worked really well but I can't tell you whether or not it did.
