How common is it to use a toddler back pack, with the harness to keep them near you. I was thinking about getting one for my son, since all he does is run off. But I'm afraid of what comments I might get. I've heard alot of people call them leashes for kids.

Both my sons were runners and I used them, I had the wrist ones so we just held hands walking along but it was extra security while they were learning all about the big wide world. Ignore what anyone else says they are a very useful tool when a child wants to walk along but doesn't realise the safety implications of running off. Ignore other people and do what you believe is best to keep your son safe.

Almost every person who would comment probably hasn't had an energy filled toddler trying to run off.
I also had a monkey one; my son wore it more at home because he liked it than we ever actually used it. I would just take the strap off and he would call it a monkey hug. I did use it a handful of times. I only used it in large crowds, like when we went to Chicago to the museums.
We always held his hand while using it. The backpack was only used as an added assurance that he couldn't slip away. It was used while teaching him how to stay with mommy and daddy, not in the place of teaching him these things.

Don't worry about what others might think or say, it's your job to keep your little one safe and if it means using a harness then go ahead. I used one and I've never regretted it. If anyone says anything just tell them to mind their own business.

Yep, you'll get comments, you'll get stares, you may even get called lazy to your face, I've even heard some refer to it as abuse. That being said, I have a monkey one. My boys love it and think of it like a backpack. I can count on one hand the number of times I've actually had to use it but I love knowing it's there if I need it like in a crowd or near heavy traffic.
What I always say is if your child is happy with it, your child is safe and you have some peace of mind that is all that matters. Ignore the comments and know that you are a great mom doing the best for your child. Good luck.
