My husband and I took our daughter on her 3rd birthday. It was a suprise for her even though she had been asking to have them pierced for some time. She was very hesitant and it took some good convincing (everything was already paid for with no refunds...) After stickers and suckers for bribing she finally agreed. They did them at the same time but one of the ladies must have been a little inexperienced at it because the back of the piercing gun stuck to the back of her ear. That really freaked her out. She wouldn't let us change out her earrings for 4  months. I would suggest for you to "tell" you when she is ready.

We took my daughter to get her ears pierced at 2 months.  She cried but it was like her getting shots she cried and when I held her she stopped.  Then we cleaned them and when we could I changed them.  She doesn't ever play with them and she is so incredible cute.

That is the age I got my daughters done.  She asked for them so we didn't have a problem.  She did cry at the initial piercing, but after that she was fine.  She was so proud of them and we had no problems with her letting us clean them.

I had my daughters done at 3 months old. She did fine until we started changing the earings, we learned she can only wear real gold or silver she had an allergy to anything else. she is 16 now and wears what she wants but when its not thr real stuff her ears get infected. So what I am saying is its not bad to do it at this age but be awear of the metal allergies.

Also I she is one to tug her ears when she is tired I would wait until she breaks that habit.

Quoting Shell:

I personally don't have a problem with age when it comes to piercings, my daughter was about 18months old when she had her's done, most places will check your daughter's ear first as there has to be enough cartalige for them to pierce and alot will do both sides at the same time on a smaller child.
In response to Toni, if your daughter doesn't want her ears pierced when she is older she can take them out and the holes will close over, just as my daughter has done now! And she had no problems with sports as she could cover them with plasters till after the match!

I had my ears pierced when I was 4yrs and I have left my ears free for nearly 2 years and they never closed over. I don't mind having holes in my ears but I do think that it should have been my choice.

I went thru the same thing, my girls wear pink, dresses, butterflies or flowers and they still tought they were boys, because their hair was not long at 18 months or 4 months. I haven't had one problem my girls don't even touch their ears.

HI Kerrie
I have two girls one 4yrs and the other is 2yrs, my 4 yr old got them when she was 4 months old and my 2 yr old at 7 months, it was fine, honestly they do it so fast that it's over in 2 mintues. It's no problem at all, we haven't had any problems no infections, they give you a solution to clean the ears it doesnt hurt, I use it to clean mine. If you want to do it, go for it, Honestly it's no big deal. Don't let any one pressure you do what is best.

Personally, I believe that is something your daughter should decide on when she is older. She may or may not want pierced ears. I wonder if some Mamas have their teeny ones' ears pierced for themselves, b/c it's "cute." I say, if you want cute dress her in ruffle butt panties, but leave the body piercing for her to decide when she's old enough.

To be honest Kerri I would tell the "family" to butt out! You and your bf are her parents and its your choice not theirs! Just don't you change that footie kit girlie!! lol

In my opinion, it's up to the parents. After all you will be the ones to care for her ears until she is old enough to do it for herself. So, you can either do it now while she is young, and won't remember any of it, or wait until she is older, and ends up remembering the entire thing.

I don't think i'll get my daughters ears pierced when she is little (she is only 3 months old). When I was young I did sports which could have been dangerous with earings (even studs in). I also had sensitivity to metals when I was younger. I think I would offer it to my daughter as a birthday present (somewhere between 5-10 years old) and make it her decision. I'll save it for a big occasion and she'll appreciate it quite a bit.

I don't think it is wrong to have the ears pierced young, but due to my problems with metal sensitivity and constant infections when I got them pierced, i'll wait for my girl.

for ME, I did mine as a tween then again as a teen. it was an AWESOME 'right of passage' experience that I'm so happy to have a memory of.
wouldn't want to give that up for my daughter. she will share in this with me and many of her girlfriends.

Have them do both ears at the same time!! Had both my daughters ears pierced younger than 18 months. One is now 29 the other is 10. Both are doing great. It helps if you do both ears at the same time. The piercing pinches and is loud for them. Doesn't hurt as much as scares them. I had 2 people do my 10 year olds and it went great.

My little girl had hers done when she was around 2yrs. I wasn't sure how she'd handle it or if she'd sit still to have it done, but I was given the best advice by another mum. See if you can get a small tube of topical anaesthetic from your pharmacy called Emla Cream. We put a generous amount on each of her ear lobes about 30mins before the appointment and she sat in the chair at the hairdressers sucking on a lollypop watching the hairdresser in the mirror while she pierced her ears one at a time! I ended up taking the studs out after about 6 weeks as one ear kept getting infected - and replaced them with sleepers and she's not had any trouble with them since....she's 4 now and we change them every now and then to whatever she wants...

I'm sorry, I agree with your BF. I think 18 mo is too young. Children at that age are still learning to walk, run and play. They pich, pull hair and bite each other. the last thing you want is for your daughter to have her ear torn by another child or in an accident.

Also, what if your daughter doesn't want her ears pierced when she's older.  She should be the one to make the decision for herself when she's older.
