Hi there. I'm having issues trying to break the bottle in the middle of the night habit. My son is 19 months old and wakes up about 5 nights a week wanting a bottle. I've tried letting him cry but gave in after 15 minutes. Any suggestions? Thanks :)

My son would wake up in the middle of the night for a bottle too, so what I use to do was give him his last bottle of milk at 11pm and he would last thru the night. He is now 21 months and doesn't wake up at all and his last bottle is at 9. Hope this helps.

Hi thanks for the responses. He doesn't have bottles during the day. I stopped that a long time ago and only give him water in a sippy cup or cup. He is down to a bottle before bed and in the morning and/or middle of the night. I'm thinking he might even hold back during dinner because he wants his night time bottle. I'm committed to getting him off though :)

Have you tried to give him a small snack before bed. Is he taking a bottle during the day? You might want to start giving a sippy cup during the day, so he can get use to not having a bottle.

I know it's hard, especially if you're like I am, and simply CAN NOT sleep while your baby cries, but the best thing to do is just let him cry. It's especially hard when you have other children sleeping in the house, but eventually the little guy will get used to it. Also, try making sure he's full when he goes to bed. Give him a little snack so he's not actually hungry.

You can also try giving him only 3-4 ounces of water when he wakes. Nothing else. Do that for about a week. Then give him nothing. It seems harsh, but the reality is that by giving him a bottle in the middle of the night, you're doing more damage to his gums/teeth. Is he using a sippie cup yet? Try it out. My daughter is 10 months old and she's already weening off the bottle. She only gets a formula bottle two times a day. The rest of the time it's either a bottle of water or a sippie cup.

There is one other method my mom told me to do. And that's let the baby cry for a while after about 15 to 20 minutes go in there, DO NOT pick him up and DO NOT give him a bottle, but pat his back or rub his head, whatever he finds most soothing, and pat or rub for about 30 seconds, then tell him "Mommy's here, but it's bed time now. I'll see you in the morning, I love you, Good night" something to that effect, and walk out. Do that until eventually he falls asleep without a bottle. Now this method didn't work for my youngest, but it did on my middle. So again. Goodluck. Be strong. You're the boss. You're in charge.

If all else fails...talk to you doctor. It may be caulic.
