Tongue Tied

We are havin a slight problem with our 1 year old son....Last month he was rushed to the ER via Ambulance due to chokin on baby food from a jar....the ER dr didn't find anythin wrong with him and his X-rays came back normal....So he went to see his regular dr for a follow-up, she didn't find anythin out either....So we were referred to an ENT(ear nose and throat specialist)....Which we went and seen today....He too can't find anythin wrong....but we do know our son has what most say is tongue tied...his tongue forks and rolls under when he sticks it out...the skin under the tongue goes to the front of his tongue which is not normal for everyone....we do know that this can lead to speech problems in the future, but the ENT said we don't have to worry cuz he couldn't find any breathin problems with him and he was normal....

So on the 22nd of this month we are havin his tongue clipped...we could have had it done today in the office but i didn't want to hear my baby scream and fight everyone off and have somethin else go wrong, we are havin him put "under"-so to say, to not only put my mind at ease but to make it easier on the staff....I'm a protective mom when it comes to my babies....I freak out when i see blood on them, but i don't rush them to the dr's when it happens, i only do when i can't get it to stop or it doesn't look right....If this doesn't help with his chokin we are goin to see if we can see an allergy specialist to see if that has anythin to do with it....i'm just tryin to rule out alot before it happens again.

Does anyone else have this goin on or know of people with it and how have they dealt with it?? The ENT said they usually clip it when they are first noticed(at birth)...we didn't notice till our son was about 2 months old and we didn't think nothin of it cuz his ped said it was fine and since he could stick his tongue out past his bottom lip we were fine....

i thought that procedure was stopped,my kids were tounge tied and they had ot services and had no problems with speech after,My dr said kids could bleed really bad from this, but most of us kids in my family of 7 had ours clipped and were fine..ot therapy will develop and stretch the skin. based only on my personal knowledge,i am just a mom.your doing a smart thing ,but check with ot and really am curious what type of dr said they would do this..laurel I also guess it depends on the degree of the tissue but i would ask a ot therapist for a look first.Ot has done more good for my daughter then most drs could ...

Do it...my son was completely tongue tied. He could not nurse and took 3 bottles to find one he could use. He would gag on everything because he could not push the food away from his throat. It took months of having him give "the raspeberries" and stillneeds some speach work but he will now eat any and everything because he can control the food in his mouth. The sooner you have it done the better!

My son and husband were both born being tongue-tied. My husband did not get his clipped until a speech problem developed. In the hospital he could not latch on to breastfeed and we saw he had the same problem. Ped. did not want to to do anything to do and wait and see if turned out to be a problem. I pressed the issue and took him ENT and they simply "burnt" it. There was no blood - he did not like beign held down though. We have had no problems since. I am glad we did it.

Did they end up putting him "under"?? My son is scheduled for 2 weeks from now. He's 2 and a half and autistic so they said they'll have to put him under but I am so scared!

I was severely tongue tied most of my life. The tip of my tongue was attached to the back of my gums under my front two bottom teeth. I never had any problems eating or speaking. The only things I couldn't do were roll my "Rs" and lick an ice cream cone. I got it cut when I was 20 because my gums were receding from the pull of where my tongue was attached. It was making my bottom teeth loose so I decided to snip it....VERY PAINFUL! Healing from the procedure was more painful than having my wisdom teeth and tonsils removed! I don't regret doing it though, I just wish it healed faster.

he did great...he went in at 8am and was out at 8:05am...so it was fast...they put 2 stitches in and they have since dissolved....he still has the curl at the end of his tongue which is great...so far we haven't had any problems and we will see if he does when he gets bigger....

Our daughter had a moderate tongue tie we had it fixed at 3 months as we thought it may have contributed to feeding problems. SHe barely cried, as they dont feel pain and there was only a bit of blood on the dummy. Its best to get all tongue ties fixed as a newborn, bu you are doing the right thing. Not sure how it is at 12 months but im sure it will be fine

My youngest has this also and we decided not to have the "snip" she is now 17 and has no issues at all.

It will depend on the severity and impact as to what you decide to do. collect all the information you can and them make a decision as to what feels right for you and your family.

this is our 3rd opinion.....my hubby is doin what he sees is best thru his mom and gma....i'm still nervous on it and i'm really scared that somethin could go wrong....my hubby doesn't see my fears and he doesn't really listen to what i have to say unless i argue with him, and lately that's all we've been doin....i want my son to continue to be healthy and happy...our daughter has no health issues and i want that for my son as well,.....Knock on wood they both have never had an earache yet and have not had problems in that department....

I'm 20 years old and I'm still tongue tied. I have no problems eatting or anything. But the worries most docs have is when they get older they do have a chance of having speech problems . They told my parents that I would have speech and I have no issues with that. My nephew was tongue tied and they just had his clipped because they wanted to be safe about it. His problem now is he drools. ( But he is only 9months ). Personally if he is eatting other foods good and has no problems I wouldn't worry about it. I would just get a second opinion.

he's been eatin baby food and table food....it was a jar of green beans-pureed baby food....he's had them before and this time it went wrong....no one is for sure why it happened....they also say it didn't go down the wrong pipe as he had no liquid any where and nothin changed colors....he always mashes his food when he's feed...it takes him longer to eat then anyone else....he eats pretty much anythin that he can...we have to watch certain foods cuz he's lactose intolerant(which he is possible to out grow will find out on monday for sure).....Other wise he's gotten away from baby food....he has started on Gerber Graduates-Toddler....we still watch everythin he is feed-it's become a priority for us to do this more and more....

my youngest son is tongue tied but its not really bad. he is almost 2. and he doesnt have any problems. the doctors had us have him exercise his tongue by sticking it out alot to help "stretch" the skin under the tongue and it has really helped. but some kids have to have them clipped. im sorry to hear that you are having problems! does he only eat baby food? does he get any table food?

Does your son have any issues with other foods? When did you introduce it to him? Does he eat any table food yet?

If he went this far with no issues from his tongue tie issue that may not be what's causing it, especially if you've been feeding him solid food for a while.

Our son had issues choking because he didn't like to chew, we just made sure he had smaller pieces and started with things that were a little softer till he figured it out better. To this day he still gets too excited and forgets to chew.

It's also good to have him see an allergist in case it was an allergic reaction to something.
