my oldest was 2 mths we visited family about 31/2 hours away. when he was six mths we went to NC. we drove at night and he did well. on the way home we drove during the day and it wasn't pretty

My daughter was 2 months old when we drove 12+ hours from St. Louis, MO to Raleigh, NC. Fortunately we didn't have any difficulties, and she did very well. She slept most of it, and we stopped often to let her out of the car seat to change, stretch, and eat.

My daughter was probably 3 months old when we took her nearly 8 hours up north. It was a long haul. Lots of stops and breast feeds and nappy changes. If you're going to do long distance, make sure it's comfortable, and with lots of stops. Often the younger they are, the better they travel. Feed, burp, chance, give them something to look at and then drive so they rock to sleep. Of course, it doesnt' always work like that so be prepared to sit back there with them if it's you and someone else going on a trip. HOpe this helps.

I took my daughter on a 3 hour trip (actually 4 because we got lost for an hour) at the age of one month and a half...she was a preemie, so physically, she was a few weeks old. She did wonderfully. We left right after her 4 am feed and at around 7 we stopped to feed her...which took about a half hour, and got to our destination at 8:30. She slept nearly the whole way...cars tend to do that to babies =] I think it was easier then than now...she's 5 months and needs a whole lot of attention. Can't be in the car too long without stimulation. lol. Go ahead and take your baby out...just make sure you leave some time for feedings and plan where you can stop, or if any old place will do... and bring yourself a whole lot of snacks so you don't have to stop more times than you need to...stopping a couple times to feed the baby will take up time. The key is to plan ahead =]

My son was 3 weeks old and we went to my brothers wedding. I just have to say, pack lots of extra. Pack a full package of diapers to make sure you have enough. Sometimes you cant always find them when out of town. Lots and lots of clothes. Count how many outfits and blankets you go through in a day and pack that many. I'm not sure if you are going any place were you can wash clothes or not. If you can wash clothes, GREAT!!! Make sure to pack extra of the laundry detergent that your are using or the samples that you get, if they are the same brand. I know lots of people have traveled with newborns. Just remember you may have a schedule, but you may have to change is slightly to fit their needs. If you are worried about people getting them sick, just ask them to wash their hand or to just look and not hold. Say that you just don't want them passed around at that time or that they are kind of young and you are being selfish. THey will understand or be affended, but you will be ok!!

My oldest son was 6 weeks when we travelled to our cottage. It is a 4 hour drive and a 30 minute boat into our island (not to mention the time to unpack the car into the boat!). He was fine- we just stopped for scheduled feedings and away we went!

I first flew with my daughter when she was about 3 weeks old, because all of her relatives live in P.E.I. and I wanted everyone to meet her. It was from Calgary, Alberta to Charlottetown, P.E.I. with a flight change in Toronto, Ontario. Calgary to Toronto was almost six hours, plus a two hour wait for our next plane and Toronto to Charlottetown was another 2.5 hours. The only hard part about it was that I was traveling alone on the way to P.E.I. so I had a little bit of a struggle carrying the two needed carry-ons and Gracie and making sure I didn't leave anything behind. Thankfully though I had a Snugli and the airport staff and flight attendants were all very helpful and patient. As were many of the other passengers. Many of them even offered me some great tips to help her deal with any ear pain the pressure changes may cause.

My family has crazy traditions. They believe that a new born should never leave the house for the first 30 days. My father-in-law just had quin-tuple bypass and was stuck 2 hours away when I gave birth. He so wanted to meet his granddaughter and thought he wouldnt make it. Upon being discharged from the hospital from delivery I asked my doctor and he said that as long as a baby is full term, and is clearly thriving (gaining wait, eating, etc), which she was, than we didn't have to wait any time to take her out. We took Ella that day to see her grandpa.



And my sister's doctor had a baby, since they don't get maternity leave, she only took four months off. To maximize the time with her son she decided to take a cross country road trip driving through Canada with her baby and hubby. She took breaks to breastfeed on demand. And pretty much let him dictate the frequency of stops. She said it was great. If a doctor is willing to send out her own bub, I wouldnt worry too much,



My sister-in-aw just went to Mexico for two weeks with her 5 month old. She got the go ahead from her peadiatrician.



Besides, flu season lasts until march and then starts again in august. You can't always live with that fear.

Hi Whitney, if your little one is under 4 months I would wait, no matter what the doctor says. It's flu season and if you are gonna be around a lot of adults they tend to be touchy feely. LOL. You will have to be very careful of who makes contact with your little one. If your little one is over 6 months, pack the diaper bag and hit the road but make sure the little has all his/her vaccinations. When my daughter was 1yrs old we drove from Cali to NC, she sleep and pooped the entire trip. LOL.

Don't fret about traveling 5 hrs or more with a little one.. When my Riley was 2 months was old we made a 600 mile trip to my sister's in Tennesee. Riley was great just made frequent stops and did the trip in 1 day. I think as parents we were more tired than the child but my sister enjoyed having us there and took over care of the baby when we arrived and daddy and I got a nap after I nursed him. You will be fine. Hopefully this will give you reassurance. Laura

My daughter was a month and a half when we traveled from Atlanta to Chicago to San Francisco. My son was three months when I took him from Atlanta to San Francisco. They were great. And we go back and forth every few months. My children were out in the world (store, office, park, etc.) within days of their birth because I really just can't sit down that long. Be careful of sick people but other than that, your child should be fine. If you're driving, you will love the baby being young because he or she will sleep the entire time. Now I have to entertain my daughter, which is why we usually try to fly now.

My oldesty was 2 weeks old and we went 5 hours away. None of our families lives close, so by 1 1/2 months we were traveling 7- 14 hours away by car. First time away in a plane was 5 months... train at 9 months. Babies travel fine. They moslty sleep. Do be prepared to stop for feedings. I breastfed both my girls for 14 and 16 months, so trips took a lot longer then. Looking forward to this christmas, now that we are done with that. Should cut the travel time down.

My daughter was 5 months when we went on the plane, we live in hawaii so really had no choice if we drove or not. but she did amazing! Kimberly is right the older they get the harder!! my daughter is now almost 11 months and hates the car seat because shes always on the go! just ask your pediatrician and then it depends how comfortable you guys are!

my son was 2 month old wen i took him on holiday to cornwall which was 7 hours away from were i live and he was great he slept most the way there and just woke up for feeds i think it does depend how good they are in the car but only u can judge that good luck hun

Probably 4 weeks. Generally, within the first 3 months, travelling is a breeze and lo will sleep most of the way, waking for a feeding every 3-4 four hours (less frequent than outside of the car). Definitely go for it!

My son was a week old and we travelled about 5 hours. He did great, basically slept and then of course we stopped to feed and change him. They get harder to travel with as they get older because they don't sleep as much and have many more demands.

My son was about a month and a half or two months when I traveled with him for the first time. We traveled about 5 or 6 hours. Just double check with your baby's Pediatrician to be sure it's ok for them to travel long distances. Every baby is different.

As long as the doctor its okay okay you should be just just. I traveled often with my son when he was that small and we did just fine. Just remember to be prepared to take a holding break or with some luck your child might sleep right through.

i traveled about 2 hours with my daughter when she was about 4 weeks old. it really depends on you means of travel. if your baby is very young it is not a good idea to travel in areas where he or she will be exposed to a lot of germs (especially during flu season).

we don't ever go anywhere that far away, but my son was almost 3 weeks old when we went about 2 1/2-3 hours down to the lake. he slept the whole time as we planned our leaving around his feedings...but it is up to you and your baby. it really depends on your babys temperament.

My son was 6 weeks when we drove about 5 1/2 hours. My brother-in-law was graduating so we had to go. We recently went on a 4 hour drive trip for a weekend with my 2 year old son and 7 month old daughter. It's not too difficult, just A LOT packing. LOL!

I traveled with my son when he was 1 month old. I went 3 1/2 hours away and he did great. My doctor told me that I had to be careful and really not let him be out of the house till he is 4-6 weeks old because of all the flu scare. But if I had someone pick him up, I made sure they sanitized or had clean hands and did not take him near someone who had been sick.



Just make sure that you can stop halfway if your little one needs something!

my son was 2 months old when we decided to visit family for thanksgiving. we live in MA and we traveled to PA which was about a 6 hour drive. He did really well! I think it depends on how good they are in the car. My son just sleeps... but if it makes your baby fussy, I would wait. Good luck either way!
