Sorry forgot to add the details. My 7 week old has an umbilical hernia. They say this is common. Any children of yours have them and how long did it take to go away or did your child have to have surgery? Any info would just be appreciated.

Hi

My girl was born with one.  In chatting to her Peaditrician he said that they usually go away by the age of 2-3 years.  With all the stretching and running around, it usually pops back in.  My daughter is now turning 6 and she still has hers.  He did say that if it didnt go away, one could put the child through an operation to remove it.  I have decided not to and rather wait until she is older to make the decision herself.  If it becomes an issue and she is conscious about the the umbilical hernia then I will taken her in to remove it.  To put her through all that trauma at such a young age, is not wort it.  I hope this helps.

Thank

My son had one when he was born.  He grew out of his in about 1 or 1 1/2 years.  His doctor didn't really stress it as long as he wasn't in pain.  As Denise mentioned, it is very common for boys to have umbilical hernias, so try not to stress too much.

My 3rd child had one. His went away after some time on it's own. I want to say it took around three months. Sorry I don't recall exactly how long it took since he is 4 now,  but I remember that it  looked very large and  bulging to me so I worried about it going away on it's own. My pediatrician said it was highly common in boys especially, too. Just a note, that even though his mended by itself he did have a double hernia that had to be operated on when he was around 18 months old. The specialist said it could have been tied in to the original condition that caused the umbilical hernia or to these holes boys have that sometimes don't close up all the way and intestine bulges through them down further in the groin region. The Pediatrician can keep checking for any hernia(s) as he grows so I just remind mine  periodically per the suggestion of that specialist. Hope this helps a bit! Enjoy your new baby!
