my grandma said my dad went pretty much from a tiny bit of a crawl then straight to walking...he would pike himself up and just walk..every kid is a little different. there is nothing wrong with it it just means he'd rather get around quicker by walking...lol...then climbing

Neither of my boys did the classic crawl, they went through rolling, commando crawling and bum shuffling depending on what they were trying to get to. Put a toy just out of reach and let him have a go at trying to get to it, you can help him move towards it too! There is no right or wrong way so don't worry if he is not keeping up with the textbook.

bravo carly i have four sons they all developed at different rates my oldest was almost 18 months old before he walked on his own slow one would think well this slow child was late at talking to as two of my others were guess what that first son has a phd in cell biology and does valuable breast cancer research and teaches at university the son whos milestones were all right is a cook

Some babies do just skip right past the crawling stage and go straight to walking, and your baby might do that.

I'm sorry but i odn't agree with anyone's thaeory that kids that don't crawl are going to have trouble reading and writing.I was told this about my son,and i panicked,but the person who told me was only a nurse and not qualified to do so.There is no research that proves this i have been told by my paedatrician (excuse my spelling) that this is not true,and there is no linke btweeen babies not cralwing and having trounle with reading and writing.My son didn't crawl ,he walked first and he is just fine

After some research on your question I found a site that suggest there may be development concern if a child is not sitting well by 10 months.

As far as the skipping crawling stage - this is generally only a problem if the child has some gross motor skill problems, in which case they then need to taught how to crawl, althiugh for most babies who skip this age it doesn't affect their development. Crawling is not the major milestone it is working out how to get to the object of their desire - crawling just happens to be the most common way. Some babies roll, comando, do the bear thing (run on hands and feet) etc.

One other thing was he premmie - you need to adjust your dates to his due date not birth date. If this is not the case and given how late he is sitting I would take him to your/his doctor and just check things out to make sure there is no underlying reason why he sat so late.

Babies will go at their own pace. If he was 2 and still not trying to crawl, or walk then it's time to be really concerned. Sounds like you got a strong, smart son there.

It's normal. Some babies just start walking. Leave him alone. He's fine. Let him explore
and watch him carefully becasue he has no fear of anything. Make sure that your house is childproof

My brother and sister were twins, and each learned to move about in different ways. My brother went straight from laying on his tummy and rocking (but never crawling) to running (not walking). My sister, however, went from rocking on her hands and knees to laying flat and using the tips of her toes to push, and the tips of her fingers to pull (commando crawling). She didn't really walk until several months after her brother had mastered running. Obviously, all children are different, and all will develop at different rates, and with different ways of doing things. And any time you're worried about the way your baby is developing, don't hesitate to bring it up at his next appointment witht he pediatrician.

My nephew walked at 8 months and never crawled he just pulled himself up and took off. He was a very bright boy and excelled at school and has 3 children of his own now. I don't think it is common, but I don't think you have to worry. They will learn how to crawl even if they never crawl as babies, by pushing around cars or toys. A Dr or the internet can tell you what they should be doing at what stage. From my experience with day care most babies sit up between 5 - 7 months, so that seems a little late for sitting by himself, but that is just a ball park average.

My oldest son was a little over 11 months when he started crawling. Every time we went to the doc for a chech up I'd have them check his hips and legs just to make sure there was no problem. There wasn't, he was just content to sit back and observe. Once he started crawling though, he was walking within a couple months. He is almost 14 now and he is a perfectly normal, smart kid. As long as the doc isn't worried, I wouldn't worry either. He'll catch up soon enough.

First off relax, All babies arre different. Some will walk before they crawl. Just enjoy the ride.Give it a couple of months and it the running that you will worry bout.

My daughter never actually crawled - she did kind of a 3 point (both hands and one knee) scoot, then went straight to walking around using furniture for help, then to walking on her own right around her 1st birthday. Doesn't do them any harm to go straight to walking. If he is trying to go straight to standing/walking, I would encourage him, but if you are really worried, ask your doctor/pediatrician.

I have 4 children and I had on walking at 10 mths. Good Luck!!! He may walk then realize after falling a couple times he needs to go back to basics. and start crawling. You can never take the "NORMAL" check list to heart. Enjoy the milestones as they come and, just like talking, they even each other out. Your Pedi relationship should be tight. and Always, bring concerns up. The nurses are always there too. Early Intervention help is there also. WEll, GOOD LUCK! I 'll be praying for you.

my son crawled for 2 weeks then was walking everywhere, some babies just dont take an interest in crawling. according to my sons dr there is no medical need for them to crawl, so congrats on your walking baby.

My daughter crawled first but I know alot of moms whos children have completly skipped the crawling stage and gone to walking! I dont think there is anything wrong with it just be sure to realize what he can get into now that he is walking! Its intresting to see what children will find and get into!

All of my kids walked early... except my youngest. He's walking just now lol - And btw... he never crawled. My girls did... my boys didn't, one talked at 9 months, other stated talking at 14 months... don't worry, he'll get there on his own time :)

my son crawled for a week b4 he started walking and a few days later he ran...they will walk when they r ready, don't rush him cuz once he starts you will wish he would slow down...good luck

Hi Nadia. It has been discovered that crawling is essential for co-ordination skills and lack of crawling can lead to big problems later in life which you don't want. I have a few friends whose children never crawled and they have all had occupational therapy for co-ordination and other things related to that. You need to find a way to get him to crawl. You could maybe put him on all fours and do the same next to him and then show him what you want him to do. Make it a game. All babies rock back and forwards on all fours when they are getting ready to crawl so show him that too.

It's fine if he's pulling up on things and practicing balancing, but I seriously wouldn't encourage walking before you can get him to crawl.

some babies never crawl...I didn't when I was a baby. Skipped it and went straight to walking. My son, army crawled for about a month, then walked. Every kid is different.
As long as he's not avoiding putting weight on his arms-I think it's prob. fine. A child I know went from sitting to scooting on their bottom (moved one leg to drag themselves around) and then just walked. They have a problem with their shoulder and didn't ever put pressure on it. This is more rare though.

my baby is only 7 weeks so we're not there yet...but my neice used to lay on her back and use her legs to push herself around - sort of a backwards crawl. every kid is different, but if you're concerned you could always ask your doctor

My niece never crawled. My sister in law had her furniture lining the room, so the baby had a lot of wide open floors and a long run of upholstered furniture to pull up on. She never crawled.. she went straight to walking.
I haven't seen ANY developmental problems from this..... (as previously mentioned) She's 8 years old now, Makes Honor Roll every grade period, She is at the top of her Karate class. She even kicked and broke a board on her birthday last year.

Some kids skip that but if you want to when he wants something place it out of his reach and place him on his knees and see if he will go to it. Like his cup or favorite toy.

Some kids walk without ever crawling , he sounds active and that he is meeting other milestones. Just in case I would bring this up with the pediatrician and see if he may need early intervention. (the earlier you start the better.)

My son started walking at 10 months. Your son is just fine. I agree talk it over with your doctor. If you want to strengthen his legs some, put him in an Eggersaucer.

While it's true that some babies never crawl (usually as a result of having limited tummy time) it's not actually normal for a baby of 10 months to only just be able to sit up. This implies to me that he has not been given much opportunity to develop those muscles necessary to do that.

Babies that don't crawl before walking generally have more difficulty with learning to write properly as the dexterity and muscle control they develop in their arms from crawling assist this.

Some children never crawl. One of my daycare children was crawling on a Wednesday and the following Monday was walking around tables and stuff. Now the only time he crawls is if he can't reach something to hold on to for walking. All children are different. Once he realizes that he can go, he will pick up the walking and the crawling!! No Worries!

so true my forth son walked at 11 months and stood at about 8 months not bad for a preemie whose milestones were supposed to be delayed however at 14 months he slipped on a floor and just didnt walk for about two months

It is not strange that he is not crawling yet. He most likely will on his own. I do recommend that you do not help him to walk first. A friend of mines son did not crawl and the teachers now are telling her that may have affected his coordination and his thought process. He is now doing all these exercises to help make the proper conections in his brain. I am not trying to be an alarmist, but I would just not help him to skip the step if possible.

my youngest wasn't crawling by the time he was a year old. He has a cousin that is 11 days older then him and she was crawling and walking and everything I called in first steps they come out and evaluted him then another person came out and tested him and told me he might not qualified and come to find out he is more delayed then we thought. before therapy could start he started crawling actually he was a few days shy of his 1 birthday, He just started walking at 18.5 months but still needs therapy for physical developmental and speech

some kids will not crawl first,it all depends on them.My oldest daughter didn`t crawl,she walked first.Eventually she crawled,after but don`t worry to much,he just might not be ready yet.If you are that concerned i would ask the dr.at his next checkup,but give him time and sooner or later it will come.

My baby girl is 4 months old and she still can't roll over, however, she can grasp things, and push buttons, smile, laugh and can support her neck and head. She is trying to get on her hands and knees, but cant quite get there yet. Some babies skip steps, like going from sitting to standing and never crawl. I was one of them, I never crawled. Nothing to be worried about :) enjoy :D

My Mums Godson who I used to look after alot started crawling at 10 months and started walking soon after...And I was there for both milestones which was very special. Every baby is different & will do these thing when they're ready! Nothing to stress about :)

Hi Nadia, it certainly sounds like your little man is an active guy ! It is not unusual for him to skip the crawling stage but it is by no means totally ok. Research have proved that crawling is an essential developmental phase. Babies who have never crawled often have spatial and coordination problems later on and typically are referred to an Occupational Therapist to do crawling exercises to overcome this. There is no reason at all to discourage the walking but crawling can be included in playtime so invent games that mimicks this. Good luck !!!

my daughter would not crawl. she'd walk with assistance, or pull herself along with her arms. then at playgroup last week she saw a baby crawling and now she's got her knees under her doing the traditional 'crawl' nonstop....unless there's someone there to assist her to walk that is!!!!!! @ our playgroup it's really clear how very different babies reach their milestones....I wouldn't be worrying yourself yet

It's not strange @ all that your son isn't crawling.My son bum shuffled @ about 14months,and @ 16 was pulling himself up with the side of the table/chair (which only lasted a week) then he was walking,he has only started crawling the last 3 weeks (@ 21 months) so don't worry @ all honey,every baby is different and your son will crawl ..but if he doesn't so be it lots of kids don't tehy just walk,and ther'es nothing wrong with that just enjoy him and let nature take it's course!
