my son will soon be 5 mths old, he's been waking at 5 am lately to eat, he's never done this before he's been sleeping through the night until 7 am since he was 2 1/2 mths old, i give him a bottle & he goes right back to sleep until about 7, should i let him do this or should i try to stop it, in fear it will habit him to waking at 5 am everyday in the future?!? it's been going on for the past 3 or 4 nights now.

I gave my daughter a bottle of breast milk mixed with some rice cereal or just a little rice cereal depending where I was before bed and it helped her sleep longer.

He could be going through a growth spurt, which will cause them to feed more and at weird times. I went through it with my son, who is now 10 1/2 months. They usually slow down around 8 months.

well thank you everyone, everyone suggests the cereal, but one problem he refuses to eat it, i've tried rice, oatmeal, warmed not warmed, thick, thin. i've tried carrots and sweet potatoes. he refuses to eat anyhting off a spoon, he will take maybe two spoonfuls (if i can weezle it into his mouth) and then forget it it's a screaming match that i can not win, i tried this everynight for two weeks straight and came to the conclusion maybe he's just not ready. what i've been doing and it seems to work the past 3 nights is i changed up his schedule a little bit. normally bedtime is at 8:30 we go through the whole routine of the candle lit room with his lullaby music on & i rock him in the chair while feeding him then good night. then he used to take 3 naps a day (2 hrs after he wakes up, for about an hour, then about a 3 hr nap around 11:30-12, and then an hour nap around 4, that has been his schedule since he was about 2 1/2 mths old) well i took out his 1hr long morning nap and for the past 3 nights we start bedtime at 7:30 and he's asleep by 8, i also increased 2 of his bottles by an ounce, he's breastmilk, and formula. and he's been back to waking up at 6:30-7 am. so hopefully this solved the problem and he will STAY THIS WAY! he's also teething so that could have something to do with it too. thank you everyone for reponding though, this is my first child, so i'm sure i'll be back with A LOT more questions!

My daughter is starting to wake up early as well.  So I change her and then feed her, and she goes back to sleep until 7:30 or 8:00.  I might try the cereal with the evening bottle.  Hopefully you will find something that works, when you do let us all know! lol :)

My son did the same so I started taking advice of others and gave him a little bit of the rice cereal right before bed and it worked, he stayed asleep all through the night.

My son has recently started doing this too, he wakes up about 4 am.  I'm breastfeeding though so I just figured he's going through a little growth spurt and once my milk catches up to his demand then he'll go back to sleeping longer.  I generally just feed him and then pop him back in bed until his normal wake up time of 8 am.  I personally would just give it a few days and if he doesn't go back to sleeping, maybe its time to start some solid foods to satisfy his hunger during the day.

I've got the exact same situation - same age and same time of waking up. I'm bottle feeding and haven't started rice cereal yet. Our doctor said that as long as he's satisfied through the night (which had been 9pm - 7am) I should keep him on only formula. I'm going to give it a few more nights and keep trying to 'top him off' before I put him to bed. If that doesn't work, I'll try and start the rice cereal.

my son does the same thing..so before i put my son to bed i give him a nice warm bath with this baby bathtime stuff witch you can buy anywhere and i put baby rice or baby food in with his milk . and now he wake up at 6am. witch i don't mind cuz he goes to bed at 6pm and wakes up at 6am...so maybe you might want to try that.

Theres a good chance he's at a growth spurt and hungrier. Have you started trying cereal yet? Sometimes this helps if you feed it to them at night providing your pedetrician thinks he is ready for it.  I had to start cereal a little early with all my kids they were all born 8 pds. and over and breastfeeding and formula only carried them so far. He is about at the appropriate age for it depending on his ability to swallow and such.   Or you might just have a morning person! Good luck to you!

if you are bottlefeeding, he might be ready to try milk for hungrier babies or he might be ready now to try weaning foods, baby rice, porridge, blended veg and fruit.

he might need a little bit extra food to stop him waking as he kind of the weaning age now.
