I have a 4 1/2 yr old boy, a 3 year old boy and a 13 month old girl. I am due in January with baby # 4. My hubby was going to get a vasectomy after McKailah was born, but he did not. So here we are. Expecting again. It's wonderful, stressful, busy, chaotic. and never a dull moment. But I want to get my tubes tied except I'm scared of getting the small incision at the belly button. Does anyone have any opinions, suggestions and an experience they can share? I really need to go ahead with this. Does it hurt? How is it done? Do they numb the area? Please send comments, advice. and thanks for reading.

I agree with Jodi, I'd be discussing the vasectomy issue with him again.

But if he flat out says no, I'd weigh the minor discomfort of the tubal ligation against yet another pregnancy... lol

If you have it done, be careful getting it done so shortly after birth, look into the associated failure rates. My doctor SPECIFICALLY advised me that he did not like to do them during a caesarian, or shortly after birth, because they have a higher failure rate.

If you have your baby vaginally they will do it through a laproscopic procedure. It does have some side effects for a day or two from the gas they used to inflate your insides to see what they are doing. If you have a c-section they can do it at same time no problem. My scar is smaller than an inch and close to belly button looks fine. I had my procedure 1 day after birth.

Hi, like you i had 3 children very close in age. My kids were 3 1/2 and 2 when my last son was born. I had my tubes tied right after birth. They put me under and I felt no pain that I normally won't experience after birth. This was almost 10 years ago. They did it right near the belly button. It looks a bit different, but other than that, everything was smooth sailing. I don't regret it at all. To have the piece of mind of not worring about birth control is great.

Ive had the tubal liagation after having 2 kids, and i wont lie, coming out of the anesthetic the pain from having the clips put on my tubes was fairly horrendous and the painkiller Tremol that they gave me didnt work so i ended up with a shot of morphine. The incisions arent to bad and do eventually fade, tho the one on my belly button is a permanent scar as it got a mild infection and cut into whee it was sown, but it is small and i think it looks cool, but no one really notices it. U would be put under general anesthetic and wont feel anything while they do it. It does hurt wen u waking up, but thats because of the billions of nerve endings on the tubes, and they take a bit of adjusting to the clamps. But once you have the painkiller, I recommend asking for pethadine or morphine, but Tremol may work for you. Thats what happened to me and ive no reason to try and put you off getting it done, its just my account of what happened with me

Personally, I would still be discussing the vasectomy with hubby:

1. Any proceure requiring a general anaesthetic is higher risk - a vasectomy only requires a local anaesthetic.

2. Tubal ligation is a far more intrusive procedure than a vasectomy, and also has a longer recovery period.

3. Your future chances of pregnancy are 1 in 300 for a tubal ligation, but 1 in 2000 for a vasectomy. And if you do fall in that 1 in 300, the chances of an ectopic pregnancy are high, which is another high risk.

4. If you have the tubal ligation done within 6 months of giving birth, your chances of the tubes healing themselves sufficiently to result in pregnancy are MUCH higher (around 1 in 200) because your pregnancy hormones promote healing. At the very least, you should wait if you go with this option.

As you can tell, we looked into it very thoroughly before making our decision and asked the doctor a lot of questions. We went with the vasectomy.

Why did your hubby decide not to have the vasectomy?

I have two children a 6yr old boy and a 3yr old girl, and after having our daughter decided that our family was compleate. We had descused severeal options. My gyn/ob told us of lots of non surgycal options, because you never know what can happen, murina is an inplant that they incert in office during you period, it is dummy prof for 5-10yrs your choice, and can be removed at any time. It may be something that you may want to look into, it is 100% safer than the old incerts that they used to use. hope this helps .

I had my tubes tied right after baby #4. Like you I have little ones (7, 5, almost 3 and 6 months). They did it under general anesthesia since I had natural birth - no epidural. Cut should have been close to belly button but ended up in the middle of belly because my uterus was already shrunk much lower then they expected. Pain was minor, for about 3 days. Just difficult to lift and stand up during that time. If you wait 6 weeks after baby, cut maybe better looking. I would do it again after birth though, then I didn't have to go again in hospital. A friend had hers at 6 weeks and said it was nothing and that scar is very small.
