I am a first time mommy to a beautiful 1 month old baby girl. I noticed today that her left eye was a little watery with sleep or white puss in the corner of her eye. It is not red at all. What could this be? Should I be concerned? Should I take her to the doctor asap?

My daughter had a blocked tear duct (wasn't evident until age 1) which caused multiple infections. Doctors kept diagnosing it as conjunctivitis....eventually we had to have surgery (2 attempts) to have a stint placed in the duct (6 months). Now 2 1/2, she is having trouble with blockages again...just a worse case scenario :)

I would not be overly concerned at her age, but I would call the doctor to ease your mind. They can probably tell you something over the phone and at least you will feel better. But I would not stress this!

No worries, my son has watery eyes and has a green or white discharge occasionaly. (more so after he has been sleeping). I took Daniel to the doctor and apparently this is cause by immature tear ducts, it is very common amongst babies. It might be worth checking with the doctor just in case but if the eye doesn't look red and sore, it probably just is a immature tear duct that will sort itself out as she gets older :o)

Thank y'all for the advice! It turns out all she had was an over-active tear duct. It went away a few days after I took her to the doctor! :)
