Weaning a baby to formula

Okay, ladies, I need help. I'm trying to wean my 8 month old daughter from breastmilk to formula. I've tried giving her formula instead of breastmilk, yet she refuses to accept it. She's comfortable with a bottle or a cup, so I don't think that's the problem. She takes solids well, and she accepts other fluids (water, apple juice), but she won't drink the formula. I'm guessing it's not very palatable? I'd like to be finished with breastfeeding, but maybe she's just not ready? What can I do to help her accept formula over breastmilk? Any ideas?

ok so myfirst suggestion is if you can wait till she is one you can go from breast milk to cows milk ALOT cheaper! But the way i did it i started with the Afternoon feeding and gave her a bottle with an ounce of what ever you wean her to with the breast milk and i added an ounce every day until that feeding was just the reg milk. So i did that for every feeding until i had her on whole milk. Leaving the first and last feeding to be the last feedings to go. It is easier on the baby and on you!!!

i am also trying to wean my 10month old daught to formula..

for those suggestions to add formula to breast milk are you just adding the powder to the breakmilk rather than with water??



Kari, I am finding my daughter likes the taste of goats formula more than a usual one or soy..

Can I ask why you want to go to formula? Are you having problems breastfeeding?

I had a really hard time trying to give just formula to my daughter too. I simply mixed formula with breast milk, starting with more BM than formula and the increasing the amount as we went. It took us about a week before she was good to go but we haven't had any problems since

I mixed breastmilk and formula to get my DS used to the taste. We started out by mixing 2oz of formula with 4oz of BM then we did 3oz of each then 2oz BM and 4oz formula...it didn't take him long to switch completely...maybe a week or two.

A friend of mine did it by mixing the two together. Start first with more breastmilk than formula, then gradually add more formula until there is more formula than breastmilk. It'll definitley take patience on your part since the transition won't be quick, but atleast (hopefully) you'll be weaning slowly. Weaning abruptly is extremely painful for you...I did it that way and would NOT do that way again! The slower the better!! (Although you probably know that!)

Babies are hungrierin the morning so i'd suggest maybe give her formula first thing when she wakes up, also you should express breast milk and give it to her in a bottle, babies find the breast is a confort to them and so make it harder for us to give up because they won't take milk from bottle if they know they'll get breast at some point in the day, if this still doesn't work then maybe you might need to change the formula because she might not like the one you're feeding her. Hope this helps.
