What age can kids start wearing necklaces?

[deleted account] ( 16 moms have responded )

We had my kids (ages 2 1/2 and 7 months) baptised last weekend, and they both got beautiful cross necklaces as gifts. I know they're too young now, but I was wondering at what point is it safe to put a necklace on your child?

I would get the magnet clasps in the beading/jewelry section at the craft store and put them on the necklace clasp. That way if it gets caught on someting or they roll over while napping or sleeping, it will come open and not choke them.

I'd say whenever you want, but I wouldn't put your baby to sleep with a necklace on. I'd take it off before napping or going down for the night.

I've let my daughter wear a necklace many times (she is 4 now) depending on what activities she will be doing, what kind of chain is on it. Will it tear off easily if caught on something? I always take all jewelry off before bedtime. Use your best judgment there are alot of factors to consider.

I put a necklace on my son at 6 months..... You're just not supposed to let them sleep with it. And a good Idea is to have a kind of that will break or open if it should get caught on anything.

Im looking for ideas on what to get my daughter for her 5 year old birthday. I was hoping to get something special she can wear everyday. Is she too young for a necklace or bracelet?

To add to what Nicole has said is that necklaces for young kids pose a danger of choking the kid or the metailic parts harming the kid esp. if left to sleep on the neck. pliz let's keep our kids out of this until old enough to manage themselves!!

my 3yo niece has now 'acquired' two ofmy necklaces! She loves them and wears them all the time - except for at night. Just assume its the choking thing. She actually had one of my other ones with a crystal pointon it which she has returned to me. She was not allowed to run around in that one (at least by Grandma) in case she fell on it. It depends on the necklace, the situation and the child. Just use your best judgement.

I would let my girls wear their gold necklaces at age 3years but, still didn't let them sleep in them. Guess the idea of them possibly choking on the charms freaked me out.

I wouldn't let a child wear a necklace for more then special occassions, or just around the house. I would definitely NOT let her wear them to bed as they can choke you. I would also make sure to take them off for rough/outside play time. My personal experience is that I tend to break necklaces when I'm changing :( so put them on after getting dressed and take them off before undressing. If this is a special necklace I would only let her wear it to church and it comes off after that is done!

i allow my girls to wear necklaces for special occaissions, like family pics, when they are just a year. my oldest is 5 and my husband got her an inexpensive necklace, it kept finding its way in her mouth and was taken away. we will try agaim later on until that stoppes happening, but i'm not going to let her wear a "good" necklace until she is much older and doesn't lose the inexpensive one for at least a year.

It truly depends on how you feel about it. I wore necklaces and braclets when I was 3 days old. It just depends on how comfortable you are and how strong and short the necklace is.

As soon as 5years of age. If you are taking them to church then dress them according to how you would like to dress.

It is our family tradition that when is baptised that they where a gold cross. Other then that i'd say wait until they're atleast 4 or 5 years old. You don't want them to get lost.
