18 months and she went into a low, full sized bed, she loves being free to read her books when the sun wakes her in the morning. we put a safety gate on her door so she doesnt fall down our stairs in the night. We never had any problems getting her to stay in the bed because we bought her one of those light show projectors and she watches it until she falls asleep...guess it helps that she hasnt discovered TVyet so this is something facinating for her!! Biggest bit of advice I can give you is to make sure the room is safe. My friend had twins who were killed when they got out of their bed and pulled the dresser down on top of them selves (it was stacked top heavy) the dresser blocked the door and my friend couldnt get in as she was 8 months pregnant. she watched her babies die whileshe waited for the ambulance.

hi, I put my kid on a bed when he was 15 months. No bed rails need it, theres is this baby safety bed belt that helps the transition crib-bed . I found it on ebay under the description BABY DREAMS -Safety bed belt for babies. Great deal ! they can move while sleeping, the safety belt just stops the baby come close to the edge of the bed. In my experience best thing ever, didn´t have to buy travel cribs or anything. We travel a lot so the safety belt was great for traveling is compatible with any type of bed.
We put our son in a toddler bed when he started climbing out of his bed. He was about 18 months. He is now 3 and I think that it was last summer (2008) that we turned his toddler bed into the full size bed that it turned into. He does great with it!
Between 2-21/2 our children went into big kids beds, But we always had the big beds in their rooms, my idea was that they would be used to the beds before they moved into them. Dont hurry into the bed thing, getting them to stay there was not my favourite game!!!

I moved my two older children(18-14) out at two, they ended up sleeping with us because they wouldn't sleep in there own beds. My younger two (5-3) I kept in the crib until 3 and then moved one to a full size bed and one to a twin, because it was what we had. All in all what you do will be fine in the end!

We moved our daughter to a toddler bed on her 2nd birthday, which went okay at first, just wish I would have been smart enough to put the baby gate in the doorway. It should would have saved a lot of eggs. Didn't have a lot of problems with her getting up when we first put her to bed in the beginning, but now it's a struggle sometimes to get her to go to bed and stay there.

We just converted our daughters crib to the toddler bed. She is 20 months. She loves her big girl bed. The first 2 nights when we laid her down she got up once and when we told her she better be in her bed. She would run and get back in bed and then go to sleep. So far she has been staying in bed. We also put a swinging baby gate on her bedroom door so if she does get up she can only stay in her room. So far it is working very well. I hope this helps.... Good Luck!

I've never used a toddler bed for my children. They went from crib to twin. But if you feel the need to use a toddler bed, I'd recommend using it when the child has taken to leaving the crib on his/her own. I know a man with a 2 year old who is launching himself in and out of the crib. A toddler bed would be ideal for that child. LOL

I have 4 children and not one ever went to a toddler bed. They went from crib to a full a little after they turned 2-except for my daughter, she got the queen bed which was used as the guest room. I never used the protective rails either nor did they ever fall out of bed. However, if they did, it wouldn't hurt them. It'd hurt you a heck of a lot more than them. It'd just probably scare them to death! Then again, I think #4 fell out a couple of times. No harm, no foul. Good Luck!

i put both my children in toddler beds just before they turned 2...at 2 1/2 to 3 they moved to twin beds -- and it helped get them out of mommy bed too, i had a problem with that -- they think they are all grown if they get a big bed!

Around 2 is a good age, earlier is possible depending on your kids status and how consistent you are with creating a bedtime routine. If you wait much longer than that, your kiddo may start trying to climb out of the crib which is much more dangerous that rolling out of a low toddler bed. You can wait to switch until that happens if you want though, it's totally up to you!

I forget when we made my son's bed into a toddler bed... but when we decided to get pregnant again, I started the transition to a twin bed since his crib was one of those three in one things. He was about 1 1/2 when he moved to a twin bed. I had a harder time with the transition than he did.
My 3yo dd transitioned to a toddler bed the day I came to get her and she was standing with one leg raised trying to reach for the rail. She wasn't tall enough to make it over but I wasn't risking anything. It was right around her 1st b-day I think. She moved from toddler bed to twin at about 2 1/2 because that was when we moved to a house with big enough bedrooms to put two twin beds. The crib dissapeared for a few months before bringing it out for her baby sister.
It depends. Our son was in a toddler bed around age 2. He was a great sleeper and although curious, he was not prone to getting himself into mischief. When he woke up in the mornings, he would come straight to our room and climb in bed with us. Our daughter on the other hand can create chaos in a matter of seconds. She likes to take herself exploring and does so verrrry quietly. So we need to be much more vigilant with her. She just turned 2 on Thursday and we plan on keeping her in her crib as long as possible. After doing some reading, it is recommended to keep them in a crib even up until age 4 (if you can) believe it or not! It just depends on the personality of your child.

As soon as they started climbing out of their cribs. I was afraid I'd find a child with a broken neck in the morning. So I did Ikea toddler beds for the last two and the oldest a regular twin bed with a rail added. For my 1st it was at age 2, my 2nd at age 12 months, and my 3rd at 14 months. My favorites are the Ikea beds because they are low enough for them and strong enough for my husband (and even me when I was pregnant) to lay down with them when need be.

I let my kids decide, when thet start tryin or do climb out their crib I put them in a toddler bed. I just put my 19 month old in a toddler bed last wekend, because she was climbing out of her crib and I didn't want her to get hurt by falling. hopefully this helps

We've asked our pediatrician about this and they say to keep them in their crib as long as possible until they start climbing out. Once they do that try a toddler bed and make sure anything they can harm themselves is put out of reach and maybe put a gate in front of their doorway to keep them from getting into other areas before you can get to them.

Around 20 mos. my husband thought it was time to make the switch. Honestly, I wish I had waited a little longer. Took about 6 mos. for them to figure out that they couldn't come out until they slept for at least a little while.

another thing..what i did with my son who is 16 months and started to climb out so i put him in a toddler bed it i went and bought a baby gate that has the swinging door.(so you dont have to keep taking it down or step over it.) and i put it in his bedroom doorway so when he waked up in the morning or in the middle of the night he cant go wander around the house and get into things when i am sleeping...this works great for me and my son cause he always wakes up before me.i will put a full sippy on his night stand so when he does wake up he has his drink and he will play in his room until i am awake...like i said this works GREAT for us..

When my son started climbing out of bed I made the switch - I think he was about 20 months if I remember correctly. And unfortuantely he did get out of bed a LOT - but I figured it was better than falling out of the crib. I just kept taking him back to bed without saying a word and eventually he got the idea and stayed put - for the most part anyway - he still tries to find excuses to get out of bed "I need a drink" "I have to pee" "I need a good-night song" "I want a comfy cozy blanket"........................

it all depends on the child...the size of them, if they are starting to climb out of their crib or not...i know the acual childs height for a toddler bed is 36in or 50ibs..but i know of some kids climbing out at 14 months..so it all really depends...but if your child has no problem sleeping in their crib and doesnt climb out at all..then at 2 years you can convert to a toddler bed..but like i said if they are climbing out at an earlier age then make the change then...good luck

This is a great question. I hope you get some answers, soon, because I'M curious! Our little guy is two... My concern with getting him out of the crib is I'm thinking he won't stay IN the bed when we put him down to sleep... So we've been putting off the switch....
