My idea of a really good toy is something that will keep the kids busy for hours, won't cause fights, entertain a wide range of ages, last a long time etc etc. What's worked for you?

Get something open ended that has a variety of possibilities for use - like Lego or role play type things. My kids love outdoors - collecting 'treasures' from the garden too.

Quoting Angie:

My kids' favorite toy is mud - LOL. We don't buy many toys but we buy a lot of books and the kids have leaned to entertain themselves - too bad I depend on the internet to entertain me - LOL.

Hee hee!  Good point!  I'm like you, I rarely buy toys for my kids.  And the funny thing is sometimes when I do, that play with it for a while and then it ends up under the bed unloved.  But they never get tired of some things... like mud!

Trampolines are pretty good too - we had a small one that we'd found in the street.  the kids just used to bounce and bounce endlessly.  But recently it died, and I'm thinking we better get a new one.

A great toy that my children have really enjoyed is the pet vet from Parenting magazine company. They sell it at Target. It looks like a doctors kit, contains stethoscope, shot, pretend medicine, little flash light, tweezer, bowl, etc. that are held in the top portion of the case, and the front of the case has 6 little doors and it has 6 keys they are color coordinating with each key and lock being a different shape. In 3 of those doors they give you small stuffed animals (a cat, a dog, and a bird) I believe the age on the toy is 2 and up. It is an excellent toys, my son got it when he was 2 and it helped him learn matching his colors and the fine motor skill of putting the key in the lock and turning it to open it. My daughter was 7 at the time and she just loved it, they would play vet for hours, taking turns and taking care of the little animals, they added some other little stuffed animals to the collection to have a whole bunch to care for. it is an educational toys as well as an imaginative play toy!
