Hi Neesha,

My daughter showed obsessive habits and couldn't play with one thing for an extended period of time.  She wouldn't complete anything before moving to something else.  If she watched cartoons, it was in constant motion.  She'd be sitting in a chair with her feet over the side, then over the back and her head hanging down, then the other side, etc....  She had a difficult time staying in her chair at school and would constantly play with something while the teacher was talking.  She could never sit still to let you read a book to her or color a page in a color book.

Sam has more of the ADD tendencies than HD.  One of her obsessions was 'food'.  She'd want to eat one thing after another, regardless of being hungry or the fact that she just ate.  It was a compulsive thing.  I'm cautious of the ADHD meds, but the doctor we have is conservative and very willing to work with us.  It's good to have a doctor that doesn't believe in giving ADHD meds out freely and is cautious about labeling all kids with ADHD, which means his diagnosis of ADHD is more justified than doctors that easily diagnose ADHD.  Don't let anyone criticize you for helping your child.  You know best.  I can deal with the hyper activity, but I can't let my daughter's education suffer for a problem that we can control.

The 3 major signs are inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. However, different children display different symptoms. Talking to her teachers at school will help give you a lot of insight in to her behavior in the classroom. Is she forgetful in daily activities, not able to organize activities, distracted, doesn't seem to be listening (even when spoken to directly)? You should talk to her pediatrician about your concerns. Best wishes to you!

My 4 year old son has some of the characteristics you have described. He can not handle loud noises, even when I vacuum he freaks out.  You mentioned that your daughter would go from eating one thing to the next regardless of whether she was hungry or not, my son has the same issue. He will not finish the food you give him, and when he feels that he doesnt want to eat it anymore, then that is it. He is very moody. One second he is fine, but you look at him the wrong way and he gets nasty, growling, super tantrums (so bad that he takes a good 30 minutes to calm back down). I dont know if he has ADHD or what. He does have his 4 year old check up in 2 weeks, and I do plan on explaining this to the Pediatrician and see what she thinks. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
