Can I do anything to trigger labor on my own?

Probably not.

Nipple stimulation or breast massage may release the hormone oxytocin, which can lead to contractions — but the cervix must be ready to open for labor to actually begin. These techniques are unlikely to work unless labor was about to begin anyway, and more research needs to be done to evaluate their safety.

Other techniques for inducing labor — such as having sex or eating pineapple — aren't backed by scientific evidence. If you want to try a certain food, go for it. Sex is OK, too, as long as your water hasn't broken. But get your health care provider's OK before trying any other home remedies, herbal supplements or alternative treatments for inducing labor.

Oh my goodness do you really want to rush labor. Me I would've suggested earlier in your pregnancy to have done plenty of exercising and of course walking this helps alot. When the time is right that baby will come Ms. Lady

they are supposed to be all wives tails... but it worked for me.

i drank equil parts caster oil mixed with orange juice and a teaspoon of bi carb soda then has sex about 30mins later haha. two hours later i was in labour.

good luck but i suggest you wait til your due date... just to be sure your little one is properly baked!

Try doing something active on your hands and knees. I did half a day of weeding in my garden. The next day I was giving birth a month early

It sounds crazy, but makes sense. Squat to pee, you know the whole wilderness thing, I did that when I was 7 months pregnant about 3 times because we were somewhere without facilities. Within an hour I was having contractions 2 minutes apart and they had to stop my labor. I found out later that when you squat, gravity pulls the baby down. The Indians use to do that to induce labor. Several of my friends have done it, and it did the same thing.

I tried accupressure- massage the spot 4 fingers-widths above your ankle bone. Also, the webbing between your thumb and index finger is supposed to be another pressure point. I did this and went into labor the next day... don't know if that was what caused it but it can't hurt!!

I used accupressure, massaging in chamomile oil (a contraction inducer) quite firmly! Next morning, my waters broke and baby arrived 3 hrs later! I was 16 days overdue, so baby may have well been ready anyway! lol . A very long pregnancy! last baby was 14 days and had to be induced!

By the way congratulations!!!!! Hope all goes well very soon x

Walking or castor oil. One of my friends swears by castor oil. I never tried it. I just walked my butt off.

I was a week overdue myself and I know it is miserable. The doctor ended up inducing him but that didn't work too well either. I think that if I had to do it all over again I would have waited for him to come at his own time, maybe then I wouldn't have had to have a c-section (you never know). I have heard that caster oil works well, but nowadays they are saying that it isn't good for the baby so you might want to keep that in mind if you are thinking about using it.

At the risk of TMI... nipple stimulation was what did it for me. I was having some mild contractions that weren't getting any more intense, so my hubby and I curled up on the couch and he played with my nipples. Definitely made the contractions stronger.

Walk and sex. Get on hands and knees to help baby to get into position to prevent back labor. I wish someone would have told me that.

walk, walk, walk - the week of my boys' due date, I had family, friends, and neighbors "walk me", both boys were born the day/night after I walk 4 -5 times, ate eggplant, and had sex.  Sex certainly did sound - "comfortable" - but it's gonna be a while and if it's going to jump start anything - you are already uncomfortable!   A good foot massage never hurts either!

My sister tried just about everything. Then someone told her to drink some raspberry herbal tea (hot or cold). It worked! It did not however work for me. But my pastors wife was a week over due and she was walking a lot and trying things to go into labor. So we picked her up some of the tea and gave it to her. She started drinking it that same night (7/3) and by the next morning she had bloody show and she had the baby that night (7/4, the 4th of July). I've heard of drinking caster oil (tried it, tastes nasty), walking, sex, spicy food. Nothing really worked for me. But everyone is different. Good luck!

well, then maybe your baby doesn't want to be born Leo, but wants to be born Virgo :). Just kidding.

Don't stress yourself out, i know how those last few weeks are just dreadful and you want to get it over with already, but they come out when they're ready to come out and you can do anything and everything from jumping jacks to pitosin and some women still don't go into labor because the child just doesn't want to be born yet. just hang in there, it'll all be over soon enough! good luck to you!

I was 4 days overdue. I tried a lot of things and walked A LOT but one day I went swimming then sat in a hot bath for about 15 minutes. The next day I was in labor :) Good luck..

But be very careful with some of the methods like castor oil. I read that it makes labor fast with strong contractions. You dont want your labor to get out of control.

There are a lot of things (all mentioned above) that you can do. I would like to stress however not to feel frustrated or bad if they don't work. I was eleven days overdue with my daughter last October and tried almost everything mentioned above. I was even walking almost thirteen blocks vigerously to try to go into labour! I ended up being induced as nothing was happening. It will happen in its own good time, if you can't get it started that is.

Be careful about some of the above methods as well, as they can put stress on yourself or the babe before you are both ready. I have read a lot of stats about how caster oil, for example, can raise the chance of the baby having a bowel movement.

Rebecca is right about these things not working for some people -- it all depends on the person. In my case, last 3 months of pregnancy, I was walking 3-5 miles every day, doing squats & stretches almost daily, prenatal yoga twice a week (with all the squats, stretches, keggle muscle exercises, pelvic tilts, you name it), last 2 weeks I drank about 2 boxes of raspberry leaf tea for breakfast lunch & dinner and at over 40 weeks I still didn't go into labor. And the doctor actually told me that it was a good thing that i didn't because the way my cervix was and given the size of my baby's head & shoulders, going into labor might have resulted in a serious injury for him and me.  that's why i said to double-check with your OB whether or not you can be induced (usually they reach in and feel you and sometimes do an ultrasound to check the condition of your cervix). good luck!

walk, deep squats (and you can do keggle muscle exercises in that position), inner thigh stretches -- sit on the floor, open your legs wide and lean forward, except keep your back straight, the idea is to tilt your pelvis forward.

raspberry leaf tea works for some people. castor oil is a good natural inducer (taken orally) but it'll also give you diarrhea and i'm not sure how much you want to be in that situation where you're having contractions & you're bloated.

also, check with your doctor to see if you're ready for labor, i.e. can you be induced? if your cervix is high or posterior, you shouldn't go into labor because you're running the risk of not opening up correctly and baby being stuck. if that is the case, i would wait it out a bit -- i.e. keep walking, doing squats & stretches, but don't drink any of the stimulants.

like others before me have said, walking is one of the great ways to induce labor. I beleive that is what helped me along on the night my daughter was born. I walked from the parking lot of the hospital into the emergency and I think that is what helped us.

ask your dr to "strip the membranes" by just running her finger around the part of the sac she can reach...it'll stimulate contractions and is one of the ways to induce labor...it worked for me!

I will tell you now... these ways to induce labor will only work if your baby is ready to come. I know as with my second daughter (aged 2) one dose of castor oil, orange juice and vodka concoction I was in labour within 15 mins and then when I tried the same with my 3rd girl (6 weeks) it did not work at all... I then tried everything from Spicy food, Pinapple, Sex, Pregnancy massage, Pressure points, Walking on a curb, and then I went to a naturopath and was given birth mix.. which helped but I used a concoction called Leonurus which I used and then went into labour. But like I said all natural ways will only work if your bundle wants to come out. So keep positive and happy as stress can stop labour. x Good luck

I was taking raspberry leaf tea (tastes gross but just persist) and also took tablets. I could feel my uteris contracting (not massively contracting but a little). I also walked alot. On the day i went into labour i thought i was having braxton hicks (they weren't overly regulary and not too frequent) so i went grocery shopping and had a wonder around a shopping centre and low and behold that night went into labour. Not sure if it helped but doesn't hurt to try these things as ways to induce labor. Also swimming and i've heard foot massages can bring on labour. I had a full body massage at 36 weeks and they wouldn't massage my feet that late in my pregnancy. So that could be good to try and if it doesn't work it sure does make you feel better. Good luck with it all it will happen when it happens
