He is three and just started using that language. I want to make sure he understands that using those names and that type of language is unacceptable.

As was already mentioned, try to ignore it. A lot of young children think it is funny. By 18 months, you can also do a time out for a minute or two to help them realise it is wrong.

Do not respond madly....just matter of factly redirect his language. For example "We do not talk like that Jonny. Would you like to rephrase that? We only talk to people using nice words." Put no emotion into it. If redirection does not work just ignore it totally. Do not give him the satisfaction of a response which is what really fuels it.

Find out where they learned it from because kids do not just think up those types of things on their own.
