I saw a comment on another post and it started me thinking... what did you raise your little ones to call their "areas". i have a son, and i seem to switch between penis and a few "slang" terms, like peter or pecker... same with girls ( i'm preggers and i;m pretty sure its a girl...so i'll be heading down that route soon). i'm a bit torn, i want them to know the correct terms, but i also can't imagine my little girl saying vagina! i grew up calling it a hoo-hoo :)

We sort of progress in our family. When the girls were little they said, "private parts" then as they got older and learned when it was appropriate to talk about it and when not, I taught them all the proper names. For some reason hearing a 2 year old blurt out in public, "My private parts itch" sounds less vulgar than hearing them say penis or vulva or vagina. My son started off calling his penis a "pee pee" and for some reason he would call his scrotum his "big pee pee". ha Then he progressed to calling his penis "junior" (of all things, he came up with this totally on his own). Now that he's older he says penis and testicles. Hubby taught him "balls" but I discourage him from saying that in mixed company! Now that my oldest girls are teens, we have fun with it. I usually say "hoo-hah" mainly because it cracks my daughters up. We do the terms the other way around with breasts. They were "breasts" until they got old enough to know when to discuss such things, now we mostly call them "boobs". We say butt or bottom or booty. I couldn't even say what the "proper" term is for that!

nu nu is what we call our daughters and as she now shouts this at any opportunity we are pretty pleased with the choice.

My boys call their a penis and my daughter calls hers a vagina or crotch. They say butt or booty but they are young so their butts are still funny to them. They know mommy has boobs, my three year old calls them booboos. They know that babies come from mommies vagina, we haven't given them all the information but they are learning.

Hi ladys I have a five year old and a three year old. I am so embarrased after reading the responses I decided to ask my 5 yr old what her vagina was b/c my husband and I have never called it her vagina we have always called it her poo-poo.So I asked her and she did not know, she pointed to every body part besides her vagina. So ladys I have learned a good lesson today tell ur kids what there body parts are or you'll wind up being embarrased like my self.

We call them penis, vagina, Bum and boobs.
I think that knowing the correct words is easier for children when toilet training or if something happens. You may know but if you son goes to school and says someone touched my peter, whos would know but you what he is talking about.

It is a bit awkward like my younger brother is 17 and still laughs when someone says penis and my grandmother almost falls over, but I personally think its better in the long run.

We taught our girls (six and 16 months) the correct words for their private parts. I don’t think there is anything to be ashamed of, so why make cutie little words for them? They are what they are!

My 5 year old daughter has asked LOTS of questions, and her doctor encouraged us to use proper terms. She told her Dad once that he doesn't have boobies because he doesn't have a uterus, and since he can't make babies, doesn't need either. Although she is familiar with the proper terms, she still chooses to use other terms when speaking about her own private parts. She likes to try and get away with saying the word butt, and she calls her vagina her coo coo. (Which I think is way better than what my Mom used to call mine. Can you imagine the looks I got when I said the term Wooter Cat?) She calls where her breasts will evenutally grow her little boobies. She hopes someday they will be bigger. When discussing boys, she simply says that boys have different private parts.

I have a daughter who is almost 6 and a son who is 2, also an infant daughter, both the older children know the correct terms for their own parts as well as the correct terms for that of the oposite sex. In my opinion it is better to call the areas what they are. You wouldn't have them go around and call their arm their "Tah-Tah" or something, it's their arm plain and simple that's that. So why should it be any different with their vagina and/or penis? Plus you have the added advantage of starting an open sexual dialoge with your child and they will be able to come to you about those areas because they've been raised knowing that they are just other areas and there is nothing dirty or wrong with those parts. Also I think it opens up dialoge about proper touching and inappropriate touching of those parts. God willing nothing ever should happen, but if something did happen the child could go to any adult and tell and the adult would know exactly what the child was taking about, without having to decode any nicknames given to the area.

I grew up calling it a zjazjie or butterfly and found it to be confusing. My girls know the proper names, but they too shortened it to 'gina. It does shock some people to hear them say penis and vagina or gina. But I agree, we teach them the names of all the other private parts, nothing to be ashamed off with these either

Front bum, boobies, bum - and the boys have doodles. My daughter has a great grasp of language, so I thought I would hold off on giving her the correct terminology for another year or so

I called it a "frontie." They called my butt a behind so I decided my front was my frontie. I don't know if i'm going to have my daughter call it that or a hoo-ha which is what her dad's always called them when he was talking to people and being respectful. I also had a friend growing up who called in gina (like the name) her mom got it because it's the end of vagina.

Hello Jocelyn ! My name is Carolee. My kids call their privates their "privacies." My daughter says "I need to go powder my nose" when she needs to go to the bathroom. My seven year old son says " I need to excuse myself" when he needs to go.

[deleted account]

I felt its just easiest to start out with the proper words, after all we teach them the correct names for the rest of their body. Why confuse them?

We call them pee pees. Boys and girls both have them but they look different. I figure that's all my 2 year old needs to know now. When he is older I will tell him the correct names. We also say butt and boobs.

my daughter calls hers a 'gina. She knows all the body parts- and when I was pregnant with her little brother my dad mistakenly said that there was a baby in my tummy. She said- no grampa- it's not in her TUMMY it's in her UTERUS! talk about stunned! poor grampa!
My son is now 2. I have been calling his penis a "pee pee" but now that we are starting potty training it seems to be confusing him. I asked him to try and make his pee pee go in the potty and he tried to stretch his penis to make it go into the potty. LOL. So I have been trying to switch over to using the word penis.

Quoting Vicki:

My son does not speak as of yet, but he'll know it to be a penis. A friend's daughter knows all the correct terminology, and I'm told some find it shocking. For instance when they went to the hospital and she told the doctor her vagina hurt, even at four she saw the nurse giggle, and proceeded to dance around saying, "Vagina, vagina, vagina." haha.

Apparently I shocked my grandmother when I was a toddler. I was in the bathroom and my grandmother didn't know what I was doing so I called out "I'm wiping my vulva!"  She about fell over from what I was told. :D

the odd thing about bum... is I call Gabriel, Mr Baby Butt Butt and his dad, Daddy Butt and his dad calls me Mommy Butt... sooo who knows how that will all turn out. I call it tooshy and bummer and rump haha

Boobs... I call them boob-ins... which I actually got from a 4 & 6 year old in Australia when they would sing a song... its a cartoon song I can't remember for the life of me what song or how they sang it but they improvised using boobins instead of the actual word and since then...... I've called boobs boobins lol
