What is a good age to get a girl's ears pierced?

I had my daughters ears done when she was 3 months old. Three months is the earliest they would do it, but the sooner the better as far as pain goes.

I have 3 girls- 9 years old, 5 years old and 4 months old. I started this tradition of geting their ears peirced when they each turned 5 because they start kindergarten and they are able to do so much more- Big Girls. :) It started with my oldest and when I got to my 2nd daughter is when I realized I better get my 3 rd daughter done in December when she is 6 months. because when they are 5 yrs old they can opt to not have it done and that doesnt work for me. So I would so sooner the better.

I had one of my girls done around six months and people looked at me as if I was the worst mother in the world. My second daughter I waited until she was asking when she was about 6. My first daught er barely flinched when she had hers done and because she was so young they had 2 operators and did both ears at the same time but my second daughter had to have one done at a time and let me tell you she did howl. My first daughters ears healed really well with no redness or infections my second daughter being older kept fiddleing with them and ended up with her peircings getting infected. It was easier to do the after care on the first daughter then it was on the second. I think itreally is a personal choice but I would either get it done early as a bub or wait until they are quite a bit older so they can understand the after care and how to look at them.

When my girl was about 7, she asked for it and I get it done. But somehow, I guess she probably didn't take care of them and one got infected and had one of the earring taken out. She remove both because she don't want people around her laugh for having one stud earing on. She got it re-pierced a few months later and everything is just fine. Now my second daughter is 2 years and I believe that we should wait till she experience it by herself. From there, we can coax her, while looking at her face expression. I had mine done when I was 7 years old too and I guess it's all individual feeling. Trust your own gut. Everything we did for them is trustworthing, trust me.

My eldest daughter is 9 years old and hasn't got her ears pierced yet - why? Because she hasn't asked for them to be done. Sorry people but seeing babies with their ears pierced just makes me cringe. I am a firm believer that it should be the person who's ears they are that makes that decision before you "decorate" them with jewellery. A baby isn't old enough to make that decision for themselves. If either my 9 year old or 6 year old ask to have their ears pierced now then, yes, I probably will let them but it has to be done at the start of the school summer holidays (which is normally 6 weeks long) as they are not allowed to wear earrings to school. I will not allow my baby's ears to be pierced as she's only 1 year old!

When my daughter was born I wanted to do it after she had all her vaccines, but couldn't find place that I felt it was safe enough for her, so I waited. When she was almost 2 she started to ask me for earings, so she was ready and I got them done. She loves her earing and had never had a problem with her pulling them off or anythings.

My daughter and myself got ours done when we were 1month old. My mother said an infant can't pull or infect the earring. They cry for not even 5mins

I've had my daughter's ears pierced when she was about 8 months old... just a split second of cry and and cuddled her. she's now 3 yrs old and everything is ok... i never changed her earings - and she never had an infection.

With both of my girls we set it as a rite of passage. If they wanted it, and they had maintained good enough grades (showing us that they were responsible), then when they left elementary school and "graduated" to middle school then they could start out in middle school with pierced ears. Just ONE hole each ear...and they had to keep them clean to avoid infections. One girl did fine. One girl was too stubborn to keep them clean and we had a "finght" on our hands to have her keep them clean. They got infected and the skin started to close over the backs of the posts. It took a trip to the doctor to remove them and she didn't want them pierced again until her senior year of high school. She was fine that time, and still has no problems. The other rule we had was only ONE piercing per ear until they were on their own. The one who had no problems with the original piercing tried to sneak out at age 15 and get 3 more in one ear. We made her remove the earrings and reiterated our one hole rule, but as soon as she left home at 18 went right back to 3 in one ear and 4 in the other. Maturity, and motherhood has reduced her to one per ear. The one that had original problems has never wanted more than one per ear. She remembers the pain of infections and embedded posts...even to this day.

I had my daughters done at 6weeks old. I hear people say i should let her decide but i dont know any little girls or big for that matter who dont. I had it done at her pediatricians office.

I also have my ears pierced when I was 13 and I decided that I would wait for my daughter to ask to have hers done. She did when she was almost 7 and had them done then.

I was 5 and remember getting them done. I was way excited to get them pierced. The good thing about waiting is that your daughter will have a say and it will be a memory for her. I am a mom of 2 boys no girls. If I had a little girl I honestly dont think I could wait. Its fun for the little girl to be excited for it but I just couldnt wait I would probably do it as soon as its aloud like 3 months before she can pull on them.

I had to wait until I was 12 and it was torture! I begged for years! As a result, I am OK with letting my five year old daughter get her ears pierced as soon as she requests it. She recently made such a request and I told her it was fine with me as long as she understood all that was involved. I told her that it does hurt and they will remain sore for at least a week. I even showed her videos on you-tube of kids getting their ears pierced where some girls screamed their heads off and others just sat there and were fine with it. After some thought, she decided she's not quite ready. But whenever she is, I will take her!!

Kristin...I think there is a difference between "destroying" the body out of disrespect and enjoying life that God gave us to enjoy. There are convictions that each of us have and some are for ourselves. This is one of those things that is not a right or wrong issue.

I always thought mine would wait until they were older, which is when my oldest daughter got her ears pierced older because she didn't ask until then. (Was a bad experience tho!) But when my next daughter was 3 1/2 she started asking. At 4 she decided she didn't want to. At 4 1/2 she said she did and when she still did at 5, I let her since she had wanted to for awhile. We made it fun with pics and a treat! :) I think it's when you know they are ready! I think it's totally a big moment for mommy and daughter!

As soon as u can, they heal faster when they are younger...I have 4 children... 3girls and 1boy! My first daughters ears got piercex when she was 6weeks, my 2nd daughters ears got pierced when she was 8months, I got my sons ears pierced when he was 6yrs old. Because he is a boy we let him decide and my youngest daughters ears got pierced at 6weeks as well..so its whatever u and ur child agree on or ur beliefs :)

My mother made me wait till I was about 14, I caved and let my daughter get hers done at about 10, but she didn't take care of them properly and one got infected and had to be taken out. She got it re-pierced a year later after walking around like a pirate with one earring lol

I don't have any girls but I know my mum got my ears pierced when I was still a baby even before i could walk or talk. All the girls in my family got it pierced that early. They said it heals faster that way since you can't play around with the piercing at that age.

I think a good age for ear piercing is when the child is mature enough to take care of them; the cleaning with the alcohol, making sure they don't catch on anything, etc... I have a ripped earlobe from a snagged earring getting pulled out as a child, just a side note there.

I had mine done at 13 and it didn't hurt at all. I turned out to be allergic to any earrings I would put in though. Now the front of the holes are open while the backs closed up. I don't plan on letting my daughter until she can take care of them herself. That includes keeping up with cleaning her ears and keeping track of all the earrings she gets. I am surprised to see babies with their ears done. I would be afraid that they would get one loose and swallow it. I think it all boils down to if you want to take responsibility for her ears or if you want to teach her to take the responsibility of them herself.

My son wanted his done when he was 8 and the brave lil bugger had to go through 3 different piercers in the same day as the first one stuffed up twice :( but he was determined and he has never had any infections.. Plays football and self defence the earring comes out for training and games and goes back in her changes it all the time and has no problem whatsoever with it at all :)

some parents do it when there small. we done our lil ones own when she 2 years old. but some like to wait until there ready , we also done our sons own he was 7 but he freaked too

Wait until she can ask for them to be done. It annoys me when I see newborns with their ears pierced! Yes - they look cute - but who was it really for - the mother or the daughter. My daughter was 10 when she had them done the 1st time. It turned out she wasn't ready for all the work to take care of them - so we let them close up. I haven't heard a peep out of her since and she is now 15. Make sure it is something they REALLY want and not just a phase.

I have to laugh at everyone saying wait until she asks and the whole scarring issue. I 4 earrings in each ear now I choose to wear 2 in each and guess what ... No scar... I also have an 8year old niece who "asked" for her ears to be pierced she is now 10 and has had them pierced 3 times due to infections and the holes closing and now has scars... let me ask how many of you saying wait till they ask have had their children christened.... Did they ask?.... I think its a decision that's up to the individual parent :) but people in glass houses.......

I wouldn't let my daughter get hers pierced until she was a teenager and then only because my mother wanted to pay for it. But my granddaughter and great grand both got theirs done at age three and are doing good, so I don't think there is any special age that is better than any other. Just make sure she is ready to take care of them herself.

I agree with the wait till they can tell you. i had my ears pierced before 8 and i couldnt take care of them right. I forgot to continuously turn them. I had to have my earring cut out of my ear soon after. :)

I would let your daughter tell you when/if she wants them.



Wouldn't you feel awful if you did it before then and later found out she didn't want them.



Even if the holes in the ear heal they will leave scars.



They make a lot of pretty sticker type and clasp type earrings for unpierced ears.



I won't let it happen until my kids can pay for it themselves. I will get them the pretty ear cuffs and other types of ear decorations though.

I think it would be best for your daughter to decide (when she is old enough) if and when she wants to pierce her ear. Maybe she doesn't want to have pierced ears.

I believe you take away the childs choice to have it done or not if you do it before they're old enough to ask. And if they are not responsible enough to take care, they risk infections. Each child is different - a judgement call - you know your child. I'm 57 yrs old -do not have my ears pierced - don't plan to.

My oldest was 10 before whe got her ears pierced. We felt she was old enough to take care of them by herself. My youngest, now 3, was 4 months old when I got hers pierced. I rarely change her earrings. I just take them out to clean her ears. On the upside, she never plays with her ears since they've always been there for as long as she can remember.

Culture also plays a part. In my country we are used to do it when we are still in the hospital just after delivering the baby! We are used to so are the nurses that do it. We take care of those little ears as the rest of their body and thank God I don't know personally one single case of infection. My 2 girls got then on their very first 48 hours after birth and they don't have painful memories of the process (nor infections). What certainly works better in each case is what make you both comfortable! good luck

I personally am waiting until my daughter turns double digits. Then I think that she will be responsible enough to take care of them herself. I will, of course, help her but she has to do most of the work. There is cleaning and care involved. My daughter and I were having this conversation at a doctor appt and my ped doc told me that she would wait longer than that because she has had to cut earing out of little ears because there has been an infection and the earring has to come out because of lack of care in some cases. I got mine done at 9...but I endedup being allergic to something in earrings so I can't wear them at all. I was old enoug to want and take care of them. My oldest had begged for awhile to get hers. We let her do it for her 7th Bday. She did wonderful and took great care of them (cleaned them as directed on her own). She is only allowed to wear studs or small hoops (about 1/2in). I don't think that the pain from ear piercing is that great to do it at infancy to avoid "pain and suffering"...it's pretty mild. It does depend on your child...is she terrified of shots, does she brush her teeth/get dressed with minimal assistance, do you think she is responsible enough?? I think it always depends on the individual kid. Talk to her about what happens and what she will need to do once they are pierced. She if she is still interested or wants to wait.
