What is a safe amount of time for a child to be strapped into a car seat?

My daughter is 6 months old and was recently diagnosed with VUR. Our Pediatrician recommended us to see a Pediatric Urologist. Unfortunately, living in West Virginia, there are no Pediatric Urologists in the state. There are Pediatric Urologist in Pittsburgh about 1.5 hours away. But my insurance will not allow us to see these Dr.'s with in network benefit coverage. They want us to go to either Charlottesville, VA or Columbus, OH because there are specialist there in their network. The problem is the trip to Charlottesville is 4.5 hours each way for a total of 9 hours of travel time. and Columbus is 3.5 hours each way for a total of 7 hours of travel time.

Is it healthy for a 6 month old baby to be strapped into a car seat for this extended amount of time? I know she will have a tough time with the trip to Pittsburgh which is only a third of the travel time that my insurance company wants me to take.

We took a trip to see Ben's Great Great Aunt when he was about 2 1/2 months. We were in the car for at least 5 hours each way and he was fine. He slept for a lot of it (he was little after all), and played for the rest. I sat next to him in the back and we read books and played with some toys. I plan to do the same thing for him now when we take a trip to my parents in a few weeks. On the last trip we stopped every few hours to get him out and let him stretch. That helped a bunch. It made the trip take longer but at least there wasn't too much crying or fussing. Good luck!

My son is 8 months, and we've gone on several car trips with him longer than 7 hours. We've had no problems with the long drives. My best advice is to drive overnight so you're baby sleeps through it. We just did a trip to Richmond, VA last weekend - started driving after our normal bedtime routine and arrived around the time for him to wake up. The trips are a lot harder on me than they are on him.
