My son gets open sores when he's in clothe diapers. At first, I thought it could be heat related (since the development of sores started in the summer), but I started using them again this week and it only took two days of clothe diapers before the sores returned. And he doesn't even wear a clothe diaper at night. If you have any thoughts, please help!

Disposable diapers wick away the moisture, including the acids, from the skin. Cloth simply doesn't do this. I find that children's urine seems to get more acidic when they are teething. When he starts presenting with problems, baking soda baths and pastes will neutralize the acids and diaper rash creams will keep the acids from getting on his skin. It could definitely be a problem with his diapers, but it could also be that the pee is just too acidic for him to be able to use cloth diapers comfortably. Every child is different.

Teresa - try a soap that is free of dyes and fragrances such as Tide or Ivory. I had a granddaughter that had the same problem until we figured out we could only wash her clothes in Tide Free. Now 5 years later she still suffers if the clothes are not washed in Tide. You might also try hanging the cloth diapers on a clothes line outside (if possible) to allow the sun to dry them as well as disinfect. I know it sounds corny but there is a lot of truth in it. You can also try boiling the diapers in lemon water after washing them to help get the soap out.

It sounds like a real nasty case of diaper rash. My daughter used to get diaper rash only with certain brands of diapers and she would get sores cause she has sensitive skin. I would use Desistin every day and that kept it ok.

My daughters would get yeast infections from cloth & most disposible diapers. Took a while to figure the brand that worked for each one, after that no more problems.

I would guess he's either allergic to the detergent you are using or to the cloth in the diapers. I have a friend who had to go to disposables because her son was allergic to the fabric in the cloth diapers.

You may need to strip the diapers. Wash them like 15 times with NO SOAP. Soap buildup can cause irritation. It even says right on the package to soak them for a day before you even use them.

Are you using bleach or a detergent with bleach? If so I would stop that. I would also avoid any detergent with scents and would stop using fabric softener.

I would guess he's either allergic to the fabric of the cloth diapers or the detergent and/or fabric softener you're using.

I just switched detergents and rinse the diapers twice in addition to washing them. I did think he might not be getting enough liquids, so I added a minute amount of juice to his water which caused him to drink more. But he still got sores.

He could be allergic to the detergent that you are using, or they aren't being rinsed enough. maybe he isn't getting enough liquids so his urine is very strong so when it sits aginst his skin its burning it.
