I really think a child should have cake on their birthday :p my son is only turning one. Any suggestions for types of cake that he can have?

I made mine a banana bread cake, and used whipped cream for frosting. somehow i figured that was less sugar, and at least had banana's in. :) Good luck!

to be honest all of mine had a small piece of a normal birthday cake i dont think it hurts them as long as they dont eat too much and to be honest most of it will proberbly end up on the floor

I'm not sure my daughter actually ate any of her cake from her first birthday --- I think once she grabbed a fistfull she basically smeared it all over her face! However, that was the first time that we let her have "real" cake, with icing and the whole bit. It didn't phase her. Just remember that you are in control of how much the child actually eats!

Just give them the same kind of cake you would like. More ends up on them than in them, but you should stick with what you will serve day to day...Make sense? if you like to serve healthy stuff only then do carrot cake w/cream cheese, if you typically pick up a cake from the bakery at the supermarket, then do that....they usually give you a free small cake with the purchase of a big one for the first birthday....have fun.

This is the cake I made for my son's first birthday and it is yummy. You can put on new toy on it for your son's birthday.
Apple Spice Cake No Eggs No Sugar
As with any "non traditional" cake, the batter for this cake will not seem "right".
1/2 cup molasses
1 cup applesauce
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp cloves
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1-3/4 cup flour
1 tsp ginger
Mix the molasses and applesauce in a large bowl. Add remaining ingredients and mix well. Bake in a nonstick 8 x 8-inch baking pan or one sprayed with a non-stick spray, in a 350° F for 30 to 45 minutes, or until it tests done.
**The batter may be a bit dry and you may need to add more applesauce or a bit of water. Try adding 1/4 cup of applesauce first then gradually add a bit of water by tablespoon**
We have added a bit of pure cocoa (2 tablespoons) to make a chocolate flavor.
Whipped Cream Frosting
Makes 1 frosting for a 2 layer cake
1 (8 ounce) package cream
cheese, softened
1 cup white sugar
1/8 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups heavy cream
Directions
1 In a large bowl, beat cream cheese, sugar salt and vanilla until smooth. In a small bowl, whip the heavy cream until stiff peaks form. Fold into the cream cheese mixture.
I also have a icing that has no sugar. If you would like it. I also have a carrot cake and white cake recipe to.
All the recipes are really easy.

I made little chocolate muffins - that way he could have his own cake. And by little, I mean really small :) [This did not stop the cake monster - he had 3 hehe] I didn´t put any icing on though.

hi chloe
you know, they don't explode from a bite of cake (usually). The simpler the better and home bake if possible so you know what is going in it. I did a very simple vanilla sponge cake and avoided giving my daughter the icing for obvious reasons. and the best photo is the one of your child staring in wonder at the beautiful cake you made BEFORE the first bite. disregard all this if your child has any allergies.
happy baking xxx penny

white cake and white icing is best, my daughter had pink flowers and we found out that day she is allergic to red food dye. its not fun to be sick on your birthday.

Mine all just had white cakes. They get things like that so rarely they just loved it. More ended up on them and the high chair than anywhere else since we let them feed themselves but it was hilarious and cute. =)
