What kind of water do you use for formula?

[deleted account] ( 12 moms have responded )

Our kitchen is on the 2nd floor and hauling water is no fun, I was wondering if I can mix my baby's formula with spring water instead of nursery water since we like to drink it over purified water. I think I'd order a water delivery then....

our doc said boil water till 3 months than after that use whatever they will be drinking as they get older (nursery water is a waste of money)

I had city water, so I just used water straight out of the tap for my son! He's now 16 months old and healthy as can be!

Dana ...thats right. In fact and this may be because Wyatt was early but even putting cooled water in the fridge and use as needed is not recommended because of bacteria.
Also on the news last night there was a story about bottled water and it has quite of bit of bacteria too.
But when in doubt the best thing to do is talk to your baby's doc and see what he/she recommends.

My pedi said that our city water was fine, as it had flouride in it. We did not need to boil it. The water filtration and process would not hurt our children.
Now, you may wantto ask your pedi. Your area may have different water.

City water or not I was under the impression the water should be boiled until at least 6 months of age!

I agree with Tania....if you're not willing to buy the water specifically for babies then I would and did in fact boil water and cool it to room temperature.... they water needs to boil for at least 2 mins in order to be effective!

I used plain tap water, but I have city water. If you're concerned I would just use the bottled water.

I think it depends on the formula.. what do the instructions say? The one we use: Goodstart states to boil the water first... now I'll be honest.. in recent months if there's water in the cold kettle I use that... or put some water on to boil the night before and make up a bottle or two to put in a bottle warmer at night. We're also known for making formula "en mass" upwards to 46 oz a day (either in am or the night before) Our son is 6 months so it doesn't last long at all.... he's usually down to maybe 8-10 oz by bedtime. My niece on the other hand who's son is 1 month younger.. just uses straight tap water. Her baby has only ever had it bioled once and actually refused the formula

so it's really up to you.

We boiled tap water and let it cool, and kept it in the fridge and used it as we needed for making up bottles.

depends on where your water comes from - i asked my dr when my son was born and she told me that if i had well water it should be boiled, but i'm on city water and it doesn't need to be boiled (at least not where i'm at)...just give a quick call to your dr
