What may causing my 4 Year old son's hair loss??

My son just turned 4 years old on June 3rd and a few days before that while we were at the beach, we notice a spot on the top of his head that had lost a significant amount of hair. His Dr. looked at it when we got back and wasn't sure, said it may be Alopecia. I have a Dermatologist appt for him on Thursday but I am very impatient when it comes to my son's health. His hair is also continuing to fall out during bath time from the top of his head, thinning his hair out. Also it looks a little red and irritated on the top of his scalp. ANY ideas of what may be causing this would be appreciated.......or any experiences with this?? Thanks!! I have been so worried :(

My daughter and step daughter has alopecia , theres treatment for it. probably go back and speak to your doctor.good luck

We don't have a family history, neither does my nieces dad, but she got it. She had her first episode around age 8. First it started with her eyebrows, then her eyelashes, then eventually about 1/2 the hair on her head (mostly on one side and the back). It grew back. She hasn't had another episode yet (she's almost 12 now), but the specialist she saw confirmed it was Alopecia Arreata. My sis was told it may or may not happen again. Good luck to your son. If it does all fall out, consider contacting Locks of Love, they make wigs for kids with hair loss. Take care.

I agree. I have a 3 year old daughter and it would break my heart too.

Yes I read it. I don't have anyone in the family that has it. But hopefully if it that is what it is, the hair will grow back with treatment. I just hate for him to have to deal with this at such a young age. He has bad allergies too!

Did you read the link? There is treatment and it could be hereditary. It's an auto immune disorder. But treatment can make the hair grow back.

:( I just wonder what could have caused this. It just came out of no where.......I feel so sad for him. I hope the dermatologist can fix it and there is no underlying problem that is causing this!
