I let my 3 yr old watch whatever she wants or i watch. As long as it is not nudity or something like that. I watched scary movies since as far back as I remember and she is fine with them. I turned out fine I am sure she will too!

yay someone normal!!

My Little girl doesnt watch a whole lot of tv yet but when she does watch it she watches whatever i watch. My parents were like that with me and im fine! But i have to say her favorite is Dora the Explorer!! Just wondering what is SO bad about Yo Gabba Gabba? Emma has watched it a couple of times but i didnt really see anything more than dancing & singing...

Best advice is to TURN the TV OFF! play music or read books, but the TV is useless.

geez, they are only kids, if we always say not this show, not this one either, why bother even lettin them watch tv, my daughter is 14 mths, and she watches what ever she wants, except nudity and we try to keep, the swearing to a min,but she gets the remote and clicks onto japanese news, if she wants too!

its not real, god

insted of being so worried about kids picking up bad habbits from tv, parents should be worring about them not making their own fun, always relying on the idiot box! and being to over protective about everything.

insted of watching some gabba gabby fool run around and have an adventure outsisde HAVE A REAL adventure with your kids in the back yard???

instead of watching sponge bob, swim around and have fun, go down to your local pool, or backyard one, and play ????

i cant believe this, tv is for footy, movies, and something to collect dust. seriously!

god im gglad im not the only mother who thinks llike this! cheers ladies

My kids watched CBeebies for a short time today, and as I was washing up my youngest son started screaming, he really doesn't like "the shapes" in Mister Maker. It was only cos he was so upset that it reminded me that both my eldest boy and my neice were also terrified by them?!

my daughter loves Scooby Doo, but I won't let her watch the new episodes, because there are alot of pagan/ witch craft influences. As a Christian mother, I don't want her to be subjected to that or think I encourage that. That is my freedom of religion. ;) I also don't allow her to watch any of the television programs aimed for tweens; such as "The Witches of Waverly Place", or iCarly, Hannah Montana, "The Suite Life of Zack & Cody", Drake & Josh, or anything similar. The characters have bad attitudes, talk back to their parents, use language that is unappropriate (stupid, duh, etc.), and have no respect for authority. I have noticed when my daughter did watch these programs, that she had a bad attitude, was mouthy, called children names, and had no respect for her elders. I already have enough to deal with, since she has ODD, ADHD, BiPolar, and some other frustrating medical/psych conditions.

We have shows and channels that are banned for everyone in the house. Most of the time we watch tv together. Anything age/family inappropriate is recorded and watched after the kids are in bed. Religious channels are banned and we don't watch shows with violence - real or make-believe (no WWE). The most violent show he's allowed to watch is Wipe-Out... and that's not violence... just a lot of falling down. He's also seen a couple of fights during baseball games or other sporting events, but that doesn't really bother me. I don't really care if he sees nudity in the context of health or culture (educational channels). We are a Barney-free house. Instead, my son prefers to watch The Backyardigans. I like them too which really helps. The songs get stuck in your head, but they aren't annoying. It's a really well written show.

I don't mind letting my daughter watch anything she wants to watch with the few exceptions of anything with vulgar language, extreme adult themes and as far as children's shows i do not allow her to watch The Big Comfy Couch, the reason is that although it is an entertaining show(i've watched it myself) it teaches children to make a huge mess and only clean up when completely done, and even when they clean up they don't clean up properly(stuffing things under the cushions of the couch is not cleaning).

Thats great Mary Poppins is my 2 year olds FAVORITE movie he dances and acts just like Bert and talks about him like he is his best friend. His imagination is on the go and so is his creative. Any show that gets him up and dancing or playing around at the same time and he is not just sitting like a mindless zombie is great in my book. Obviously I agree no violence, bad language, or disrespectful attitudes towards parents although if it does come on a show I explain to him it is not ok to act that way.

cheers :D

My boyfriend and I have agreed to no tv before the age of 3 because of studies showing it lowers potential IQ by 10% and leads to a higher level of ADHT...possibly why ADHT is rampant in North America compared to most European countries.

After 3 we will decide what is appropriate for them to watch with us, probably what we watch, the discovery channel, nature shows, Canadas Worst Handyman, the news...who knows

My kids must be older than the average children here. But when they were young, early nickelodeon shows and movies/shows on dvd were all that were allowed. I HATED Barney - my son loved it though so I let him watch Barney and went to take a shower, lol.

My youngest - a girl - fell in love with Dora as a toddler - i wasn't happy about the spanish speaking as she was learning japanese, but overall it was a good show.

Now that they are older I have to ban things like Jackass, and Family guy.

The one and only Sponge Bob Square Pants. This is the dumest show for kids I have ever seen, and since I live in Canada, that is in both french and english. He is allowed to do all the things we tell our children not to do and he gets away with it because he is stupid. That is the worst message to give our children. I even get teased because I hate this show so much. They should remove this show from broadcasting. Sorry, it is a bit dry as a comment, but you can imagine how much I do not approve of this show.

My Daughter is also one and we do the same thing with the same shows. She loves the singing but once people start to just talk she is right back to playing. We play together and talk about what is going on with the show till it is nap time. After nap we actually go and DO stuff away from the tv then she watches Veggie Tales (Her fave) while I make dinner. I have a couple of shows I watch later on in the evening but I don't watch much. When I do watch my shows I play with her so she really isn't totally zoned in on what is going on so it all works!!

my sons only 5 months...but may i ask what the problem is with these cartoons???....minus the adult ones......this leaves me too wonder are we just gonna keep are kids in a bubble so they become shell shocked when there old and in the real world ( not to put down anyones choices because to each their own and you can do whatever you want with your kids...im just curious)

i think it's all really depending on what your values are and what you would like to teach your children.  When my kids are little i refrain from spongebob only because when my daughter was 3 she went to her preschool and decided (told the teacher) she wanted to be stupid like patrick.  That ended spongebob really quick.  Now that she is five I caught her watching it while I was in the bathroom and had come out.  He attitude had changed and she now picks out what she feels is wrong with the cartoons decisions.  So I let her watch it now and just keep the little ones from watching.  I have found that in my house it works best for me to watch it first then decide which kids can watch what based on thier individual personalities.  However, the two mentioned above, none of the kids are allowed to watch :)

I would have to say teletubbies and barney. Teletubbies because of the general nature of it. I feel that it doesn't teach anything of value and the no talking thing really does not help develop my children's speach. Barney just because I think it's weird. :)

To each his/her own. What does one care what other people's kids watch? Every child is different. One knows their child and should know what they can handle. Give them choices you feel are acceptable then let them make their own decision among those choices so they feel like they have a voice. Spend that half hour with them then get out and play!

My son is bad about repeating things, so we have had to really watch what he is watching. Cutting out shows like Chowder, and limiting Spongebob (unfortunately, a favorite) have helped with rude comments. We now turn on PBS in the morning and he loves it! Turns out, he got to see some of those shows at Pre-K and he doesn't miss the ones that we don't want him to watch.

My son did learn from watching Numberjacks so I wouldn't rule out some of the possible benefits of the educational shows. I like educational shows and I think other age appropriate stuff has it's place too. I don't even have a problem with the "bad shows".

I agree with the point that interaction is better for a childs education than TV though. Play games, read books and go outside then you don't need to worry about what they can or can't watch. The TV is only on for a very small part of the day and mostly at times where the shows are suitable for all so I don't really have any cause to ban anything.

I have not outright banned any shows from my 4 year old. We avoided Barney at all costs because I can't stand it, but she has seen it on occasion at the inlaws. She has never really like it any way. I don't like for her to watch Spongebob, but my husband and father-in-law let her watch with them. I just don't care for some of the things she has picked up from it, however we use it all as a learning opportunity. I mean we do live in the "real world". She watches most anything else we watch. I do try to avoid letting her watch some things that are extremely violent and gory, but she has an excellent understanding of fantasy and reality. If she was prone to be scarred by monsters and such or have nightmares, I am sure I would be more cautious with what she watches.

Mine gets to watch pretty much anything she wants with the only exceptions being Bratz and Dora. When at 2 years old my baby (she's 5 now) asked me where was Dora's mommy and daddy and why didn't they play with her, it was time to say Adios. I don't care for some of the older shows like Hannah Montana or iCarly because she tends to get sassy after watching them too much, but in moderation she can.

Not sure what is wrong with the Wiggles. My daughter loved it when she was little. She also got a lot from Lazy Town. It inspired her to be active and not a couch potato. Have you ever really listened to the words in the songs? They are great! Little Einsteins, Imagination Station, Bear in the Big Blue House, Dora, Diego, Handy Manny, Backyardigans ... these were always allowed. Now that she's 8 I don't allow anything with attitude or adult humor, but she can pretty much watch what she wants. She's more interested in reading and playing on ToonTown on the computer.
