Hannah Montana! My daughters name just happens to be Hannah, and I've told her daycare teachers to not let any kids call her Hannah Montana...it's just not appropriate at her age. Not to mention that I remember people calling me after a character in Twin Peaks when I was growing up, and I hated it. Hannah doesn't do TV much anyway - she mainly watches videos (Little People, Olivia, Care Bears, Sesame Street), and sports.

I'm with everyone on the yo gabba gabba and barney! and adult cartoons, anything with monsters, violence, or fighting. i'm careful with the nature shows where stuff is eating one another. i know it's nature but her brain can't wrap around why the big kitty just ate the little deer. that took two weeks worth of explaining (whew!!) i'm also ok with mickey mouse club house, imagination movers, and my friends tigger and pooh. i think they have lessons to learn and can teach if u watch with them and explain.

my 3 year old watch pretty much anything, most of the time it's all shows that are on diseny or disney movies. She does watch a lot of adult evening shows with me before she goes to bed, soap operas, csi, bones, anything i would normally watch but by the time i watch them she is more interested with laying with me then what's going on. I also don't limit her to many movies that she can't watch. Most likely if i'm watching it then she is as well.

I watch with my son and talk to him about who is mean, who is doing wrong, why we don't do that, etc. I think that is better than banning. OK, not all the time, but when I can't watch with him I put in a video that I know is OK. (I do use TV when I need to distract him too, I'm not a perfect mom).
I only 'ban' things if he is picking up bad behavior from it - for example, he thought Popeye was hilarious when he was younger but then started punching me in the head. No more Popeye!
But I remember watching all sorts of "violent" cartoons (Looney Tunes) when I was young and being just fine - I worry more about the values taught in Fairly Oddparents than any other, but we talk about it. (Bully babysitter, non-attentive parents, gets everything he wants, etc.)
As for Wiggles, Yo Gabba Gabba, Barney, and Imagination Movers - they probably teach the best lessons on TV today. Sometime they can be annoying, but they teach great things to the kids! (I prefer Wiggles and the Movers over the other two for sure).

It goes without saying that cartoons geared towards adults/older children (The Simpsons, King of the Hill, SpongeBob, Family Guy, etc) are not watched by my sons. Just because it is animated doesn't mean it is appropriate for all children to watch. The one show that we have banned, which is age appropriate, is "Caillou". Our 2 yr old son started to whine just like him after watching a few episodes which drove us and others insane.

At my house, we usually have the tv on most of the day, mostly as a source of background noise (i can't stand it when it is too quiet.) usually it's on disney channel or the game show network, Rhayne loves gameshows. But most of the time, she'll crawl around and play herself and then come to get a drink or a snack and sit and watch one of her favorite shows, Lilo and Stitch or Phineas and Ferb.

I have their tvs in their room set to five stations. we have two pbs, disney, nick, and cn. But they cant watch cn late at nite. and in the living room we have the box so they can watch sprout and noggin. there is only one show that no one is allowed to watch in our house and that is Family Guy. that show is the worst. but when ther are adult shows on the kids are not allowed to watch they have to go to their room. i cant say nothing about the shows you listed my kids love yo gabba gabba, barney, and teletubbies. did anyone ever see the show bubahs they liked that one too.

I don't let my daughter watch Scooby-Doo because she gets frightened by the monsters, the Suite Life of Zack and Cody (talk about brats), and definitely nothing like the primetime cartoons of the Simpsons, South Park, King of the Hill or any of that garbage. Thank goodness she loves Miss Spider's Sunny Patch and Fifi and the Flowertots (even though I hate it)....at least they teach the kids something that is worthwhile. OOpps almost forgot KIM POSSIBLE...ugh...talk about snotty teenager.

I'm with the non-banning mothers...My son watches pretty much anything if it's on TV...the only swearing or anything he has ever copied, or wondered about, has been my own, and he understands that those are "bad" words, and gives me crap if I say them.. Then again, my boy has the attention span of a fish, and won't sit long enough to watch a full show, maybe the first 10 minutes. AND if I were to ban anything, it would be MAX AND RUBY...for whoever doesn't know what that is, its a 7 year old bunny raising her baby bunny brother with NO parents...They catch the bus, they go shopping, they play outside alone...So if I get anal and cut ANYTHING, that will be the one to go.
Thank you! I am so glad that I am not the only person who finds Max and Ruby absolutely bizarre. Not to mention Ruby is down right obnoxious. My daughter is 2 and her favorite cartoons are Spongebob, Dora the Explorer, and Wow Wow Wubbzy. I don't think Spongebob is that awful. Is it as educational as some of the other programs available? Um, not hardly. But I don't feel my daughter will be scarred for life by watchintg it either.
haha i'm glad to know i'm not the only one that thinks that Ruby is a bitch :)

It's so true about Max and Ruby. Aside from the kids with no parents thing, Max doesn't ever listen, and is never punished for it, he has next to no speaking ability!
I forgot about Toopy and Binoo, too, they annoy me. My husband hates them too, because they are always cross-dressing!
That's mostly the rule for banning cartoons around my house. If it bothers ME, I don't watch it. Spongebob is too dumb for me, like Family Guy. It's high school humour, and the kids don't even get it. (they are 6 and 3). They are too young to appreciate it, and I am too old, I guess.

I am also with the non-banning mothers. We don't watch a lot of TV but if they do they watch Sprout or Disney channel. I draw the line at nudity. My kids know what the bad words are and know they will be in trouble if saying them. They don't care about watching the adult geared shows right now so it's not an issue. If I'm watching something, I don't turn it off or change the channel. They can watch it with me or go in the other room. It's really not an issue for us.

nothing with fighting but as my little man is only 1 the TV is only very rarely on during the day - to busy playing. As a teacher i must say that kids watch far to much TV and it is very obvious in my class who watches lots of TV and who doesn't. The top 10 high ability chilren in my class all read and do lots of activities and i know for a fact the majority of the children who struggle watch huge amounts of TV and have no outside interests. It is the amount of TV as well as the content. About an hour a day is all children need. the rest of the time they should be playing and interacting.

i have an 8 year old boy and 4 year old twin girls!! It's hard to stop my son watching things that i think are a little old for the twins but they seem to find a happy medium! My son loves ben 10, i-carly, Drake and Josh, scooby doo the list goes on lol one of my twins can be a little sensitive and wiil often hide under her blanket when scooby doo is on but as it hasn't caused nightmares she still watches! The twins watch nick junior or playhouse disney i agree yo gabba gabba is just weird and they were never in to teletubbies really thank god!! I watch some tv with my kids and they sometimes have questions about what they've watched but i always answer as best i can!! I must admit my son doesn't really pick up on the adult jokes as when he watches me laughing he always asks why, i normally say "oh nothing" and he goes back to watching!! We have to remember that even if we limt what they watch there are bad things really going on in the world that are much more worrying i have had to stop my son listening to the news on the radio as that caused much more problems than his kids shows ever have!!! He started to worry about things that he shouldn't even think about at his age and ask questions that were hard to answer so now we no longer listen to the radio in the car!!

I really can't believe that the Simpsons is even an issue! It is the best classic "cartoon family" show ever! Yea its has more hidden adult jokes in between the lines, but really, they are so hidden, and it takes me a few seconds to get. Now, the movie, was a bit, much, and I aam glad I watched it b4 my kids...lol..
again, shows shouldn't impact a bit on your child's values, that's your job. Kids aren't really that imprecionable. What's wrong with a kids saving the world? People don't have problems with spiderman and superman..
ok, teletubies and barney are creepy but the kids love them. Barney teaches about love and friendship..and all teletubies do is dance..lol.. its boo-bah that freaks me out!! LMAO!! kids love them b/c the colors though.
I love this thread.. so interesting what people say these days.

For my 2 year old, we stick to noggin, and per school tv. My 8 year loves spongebob, with being said he is so amused by whats going on in the show that he does not understand the humor. I wil not allow my 2 year to watch it though. When my son started watching Spongebob it was new so I did not realize that is was not suitable for children until he was already hooked. I cant punish him because I was to busy cooking dinner to pay attention to what made my son sit still so I could do so. I grew up watching The Simpsons, and did not realize that I should not have been watching it until I was 17. So I dont let my Watch The Sipmsons, King Of the Hill, Family Guy, or Futurerama or pretty much any cartoon that amuses me and their dad.
As far as Yo Gabba Gabba, Barney, and The Teletubbies, I agree these shows are creepy as hell, But my 2 year old loves Yo Gabba Gabba, and I absolutly love they way he dances and sings when it comes on. If he is in another room and hears the theme song he flys down the hall the get to the tv. Barney and Teletubbies, hell no!!!!!!

I agree with Tanya I try so hard not to let my kids watch Spongebob. I think it is more oriented to grown ups than it is for children... I just don't like my kids to watch the "humor" that is related to adults in the show. Another would be Barney, I just don't like that big purple dinosaur.
My kids usually watch Playhouse Disney and/or Nick Jr. After those hours I mostly try to keep it in Disney Channel, or the other ones my kids like is Boomerang's since they are all old cartoons that I grew up with I really like sitting down and watching tv with them.
