My son is a pretty good sleeper. He usually sleeps frmo 7:30pm until 6:00 or 7:00 in the morning, depending on if I have to get him up for school. He aso takes a 1 1/2 to 2 hour nap

my son goes to bed around 11 pm wakes up around 9:30-10:30 am.takes a nap 4 to 5 pm.its his normal schedule.it seems too work out bc his dad works 2nds &I stay up late waitin for him.so i get decent amount of sleep & dont sleep my whole day away.if i put my son to bed any earlier he'd be up @ 6 or 7 am.you just gotta find a schedule that works.Good luck.

This actually cracks me up because there was another thread where the mom was talking about falling back asleep in the morning from being tired & her kid went to bed at 10 & everyones advice was to make the kid go to bed earlier. My kids have bad sleep habits but my middle son sees a sleep specialist for a disorder (inherited) and since my 3 kids are sharing a room, its only natural they are all on the same pattern. My kids go down around 11:30. They wake up around 9:30 for the day, but even my oldest at almost 5 still wakes up in the middle of the night, as does my 3 year old (multiple times) and my 4 month old wakes to nurse. I of all people know about bad sleep habits & we do have a routine. Bath, Bible story, prayer, snack & drink of water, brush teeth, to the bed & read a story book, tucked in, lights out. We do lavendar bath & lavendar lotion. I also have a scentsy warmer in there room with lavendar scent. I would just say its different for everyone & the change has to be gradual because your body has a natural circadian rhythem. I am trying to slowly move their time up but Im a night owl too & even if I get to bed early 8 am is still like 5 am to me :) I would go with whatever works for you & your family. Who cares what everyone else says.



* and BTW neither of my kids take naps & havent since my youngest was 2.

My son is 4 and he sleeps anywhere between 7.30pm and 9.00pm depending on what activity he has had on the day. He usually is awake around 7.00am. Lets hope his sleeping pattern doesn't change.

Oh, my 2 years old boy also sleep very late at night. He goes down around 12a but wakes around 8.30a. So I m quite tiring also as I can only do my own works after he got to sleep but then he wake up tat early... Can't wait to put him to school...

My 11 month old goes to bed around 8 or 9 pm and wakes up at about 7 am. If i put him in our bed right after he wakes, he goes back to sleep until about 9 or 10 am.

Hi Tara, I have a 4yr old son and he has been on a consistent bedtime schedule since he was 1. He goes to bed at 830pm and he sleeps until 800am! He loves to sleep and he is also very active during the day. I have to tell you that he does not take a nap however which has helped his sleep schedule. When he started preschool his hours were during his normal nap time and so we had to cut that out of his day and he readjused fine. Nowadays if he takes a nap I find it harder for him to fall asleep at his normal bed time hour and find that he stays awake in bed much much later than he should! lol.

I use to really struggle with my toddler decieded she was not going to take early or any naps and one day I realize that I was fighting an uphill battle. I was not accepting the change. So, I now put her in her room for about 1 hour to 1 1/2 for a quiet time. She is not allowed out unless she has to go to the bathroom. She usually does not nap but she plays quietly (or rest) and then will go to bed about 7 to 7:30pm. If she does fall asleep she pushes her bed time to 9 to 9:30pm. The quiet time helps my sanity either way.

My 2 and a half year old goes to bed from 8 to 8.30 pm and sleeps until 8 or 9 the next morning. My 7mo old is in bed at the same time a wakes between 6 and 8am.

My four year old son set his bed time when he started sleeping through the night consistently around 9 months old. He started going down around 8 and wakes up at 8 in the morning. We tried for almost two years to move bed time back so he'd sleep later since I was working days and dad was working nights and getting up with him in the morning but it didn't work. He still went to sleep around 8. Now my baby, who is 5 months, has set himself the same schedule as his brother. It works great for me, Peter goes down around 8, AJ at 8:30 and I have time to clean house before I crash. One thing we did learn though, is that if they have a late nap all bets are off and they won't be down until at least 10 or 11. Sometimes you have to move naptime to move bedtime.

My 3 yr old DS gets up at 6:30 and goes to bed between 8 and 8:30 pm and has given up napping during the week at the sitter's. He needs more sleep, but when I pick him up at 5 after work, he's usually ready to crash but he hasn't had dinner and it's too early to put him to bed and expect him to sleep through. On the weekend we try to make up some of the missed sleep with 2-3 hour naps and later wake up times.



The only thing I might suggest is that if she's ready to crash at 3 pm, let her nap for maybe just 1 hour, so she's got some rest, but it shouldn't affect bedtime. Also, just having some quiet time while the others are resting might encourage napping.

hay there, well with reading all your comments, i see how different every baby can be....my son is just almost 10 months.....he is down without fail or a fight anywhere between 5pm and 6pm, unless we are out and then he doesnt sleep even tho so tierd until we put him in his cot...but always wakes between 6-6.30am!!! its fine for me as im up getting ready for work as i start at 7 am, but dad doesnt enjoy it as he only starts at 9am..and wood really like to lay in....i wouldnt mind a lay in on the weekends tho...but hes up like i said so early....we have tried giving him a nap from 5-6pm. wake him, then goes down about 9ish but still cant kick the early mornings!!!! im dying for a sleep in with my hubby!!! tho i do enjoy that he goes down early in the evening as i can have a bit of time to myself ect..... i suppose every lil one is to there own and i dont think anyone has it perferct!!!!

My son just turned 2 and would stay up late if we let him. But now during the week he goes to bed about 8-8:30pm and i wake him up at 7am for daycare.He does sleep all night long. Weekends i put him to bed sometime after 9 and i just let him wake up on his own.I do still put him down for naps on weekends sometime after 12 if were not busy, just to try and keep him in somewhat of a routine.Naps are about 2-3 hours.

My son (36mnths) struggles to switch off at night. I used to put him down around 8pm but then he won't go to sleep for 2hrs! Rolling around in his bed, getting up... I even took all his toys and books away and just took them out during the day but that didn't help either. He just couldn't get to sleep. The worst was that he was getting up at between 5am and 5:30am every morning and clearly didn't have enough sleep. He'd be grumpy during the day and then he'd nap for 3hrs around 11am. So now I take him and his little brother (13months) up at 6pm to brush teeth and get ready for bed. At 6:15 he's usually in his bed and waiting for me to finish with his brother. By the time I get to him then, he's had a bit of alone time (quietly, as their rooms are adjasent), we read, talk a bit about the day, pray, then I sing him a lullaby and then I leave. He will still get up and after about 1hr he'll come out of his room but then I just take him back to his bed and sing to him again. He'll either fall asleep then while I'm singing or within a couple of minutes of me leaving his room. By this time it's been about 2hrs since he was put in his bed so he's had the time to "unwind" and it's around 8pm rather than 10 or 10:30! He will then wake up between 6:30 and 7am which is better than 5 and I know he's had plenty of sleep! I still put him down for a nap around 11/11:30. Some days he'll nap, other days he won't. When he naps I wake him when his brother wakes up so that varies. Any time from 1hr to 1.5hrs nap for my eldest then!

This is totally fine for his age, nothing to worry about at all. From my expeience it's very rare and lucky if a baby sleeps a full 12 hours.

Tara, my son has exactly the same problem, we had to drop the naps during the day as it would casue his to stay up until as late as midnight, it was horriable. When I tried to cut out naps he would end up exhausted by 3pm and sleep for two hours, I tried laying down with him earlier so he would sleep easier but that did not help. We ended up at a natrualpaths after a serious of doctors visits with no anwsers. We had what was called a vaga test and the natrualpath found a number of food intolerences that were contributing to the problem. She put us on a desensitising diet and one month along with alot of supplements and we have seen some great results. It not for everyone but when you have tried everything and nothing works you may want to consider that it maybe food related. My son has a gluten, wheat, dairy and yeast allery that I am told you can grow out if treated early.

Hi all,
My son will be 3 in 2 weeks and when he's with me, 5 days a week, I make him have an arvo nap. He usually sleeps between 2 and 3 hours, from about 1230pm or 1pm, then still goes to bed between 730pm and 830pm, and wakes up anywhere between 5 and 7am.

When he's with his father the other 2 days, he doesn't have a nap. When I pick him up on the 2nd afternoon, he's always in a filthy mood and is grumpy and tired. I don't think it's fair on me! His dad thinks that coz his fiances kids cut out naps by 3 years so should our son. I SOOO DISAGREE!!! Every child's different, and my son will be having naps for as long as he needs them up until he starts school. I don't care what anyone says

Tara, have you tried putting her down for a nap, or giving her some quiet time, right after lunch? then she wouldn't be waking up so late from an unscheduled nap. maybe just an hour would help her bridge until bedtime, help her catch up a bit on sleep and she'll grow out of it. our daughter is 19 months and has always been a sleep fighter, but setting a strict afternoon nap schedule has made an 8pm bedtime the norm.

My now 3 yr old NEVER slept straight throught the night. All kids are different! I wouldn't worry about your little one if his sleep pattern works for you!

our just-turned-three year old daughter goes to bed at 8:00pm and sleeps straight through (usually) until around 6:30-7:00.

our 14 month old son goes to bed around 7:00pm and wakes around 6:00-6:30. he sometimes wakes up for a nuk but then is right back out.

we are pretty good with routine naps each day. i've noticed that messing those up messes up good nightime sleep.

My 4 year old son usually will not go down before 10pm. However, recently he has been not taking naps during the day and is going down now around 8. He sleeps til 8 or 9 am. I think that this will change a little when school starts. He will be in Pre-K and I know that they take daily naps - I'm thinking this will push his bed time back to around 9 or 10.

My son is nearly 2 and for a few months now he has been taking NO naps during the day. He is an active one. He sleeps between 7 and 8 at night and wakes between 6.30 and 8ish. He sleeps through about half the week, other nights he wakes crying and needs help resettling. I guess he generally gets around 11 hrs sleep a day which isn't quite enough I know but I have tried everything and it seems to be he is taking what he needs. I am so envious of all of you who's kids my Toby's age are still taking day naps!!!!!! xxxx

I do not seem to have the same luck as many of you with my 10 month old twins sleeping schedule. They pretty much are asleep anywhere from 7.30-8.30pm everyday and wake up by 5.30am. They also sleep for an hour in the morning and 1.5-2hours in the afternoon. The challenge is the nights as they wake up at 11.30 for a feed and nowadays around 3.00am to come and sleep with us in our beds instead of the cribs. Exhaustion from so many months of sleepless nights has us parents giving in to their schedules for now till we can both verbally communicate with eachother. For now any procedure that gives us an extra wink helps.

My 22 month old son slept from 8 pm to 8 am before. Since it is summer he won't fall asleep before 9-9.30 pm. But he can sleep until 9-10 am. He still sleeps 2-3 hours in the afternoon. I thought he sleeps too much but reading the other posts I think he is ok.

My girls usually go to sleep by 7pm or 8pm...We have a good routine going, so we try to stick to that. Of course there are days that they are in bed a little earlier, due to a super busy day, and then a little later if for some reason they had a nap...My girls (3 1/2 & 1 1/2) are not big on napping. But they usually get about 11 to 13 hours of sleep a night. This seems to work for us...Especially for Mom & Dad time, which is sometimes overlooked in our busy life...lol Our bedtime routine consists of bath, snack, 2 stories and sometime a little song or two...But usally they are out by the first book...lol Hang in there. Stick to your routine and try to keep naps short and not any later then 3pm...Seems to work for us...

Well, I am SO glad to hear that I am not the only one with a child who doesn't want to stop/sleep! I am finally getting to a point where we have some regularity, though. My daughter is about to turn 3 and we have stopped naps b/c if she takes one there is no chance of sleep before 11 or 12am. Without the nap, she goes to sleep quite nicely by 9:15/9:30 and then, for the last 4-5 days, has been sleeping until about 9am. Pretty perfect so hopefully we can continue that. In the past we've had some major difficulties (since the day we brought her home - she is a night owl like her mama and papa). She would stay up until 1 or 2 am if we let her. She does usually compensate on the other side, so that's good. Actually, after reading some of the above stories, I think she is not so bad! Good luck to all of us!

My daughter is only just 9 months old and we have her in bed between 8-8:30 and she will fall asleep within half hour of being put down and will wake between 7 and 8-8:30 in the morning. I had alot of trouble with her sleeping patterns a few months ago and resorted to reading a book call "no cry sleep solutions" and found it worked well, some of the ideas. the book is aimed at babies and children of all ages and really makes you look at your routine and where you may be able to make a few changes.



Remember to stay strong and positive and don't ever doubt yourself. As young as kids may seem they are smart little cookies and will pick up on ur moods and emotions and will play on them!!! good luck

I had alot of trouble with my 5 year old for a while then realised that she wasn't actually tired enough for bed time. We now go for a walk after dinner which just takes that last little bit of energy out of her and she goes to sleep without a fuss. It really depends on the children but they definately keep us on our toes. Your never bored when you have children.

I know the feeling. My 2 year old is night time sleep fighter. He goes to bed around 8, but usually doesn't fall asleep till around 9 pm. He stalls and fights it. He normally will rise on his own between 6:30 and 7 am. I have an infant who wakes up at 5 am, and a lot of the time, she will wake him up. Once he is up, he doesn't go back to sleep.

We keep to a pretty tight schedule. My almost-2-year-old son is *very* active and needs his rest. He goes down between 7:30 and 8pm and is up at about 6:30. Then he runs around like crazy and is amazingly still on two naps: one from 9:30 to 11 and then another from 2:30 until about 4. I'm hoping they start to merge, but since I'm due with a new baby any day now, I don't want to change too much for him.



BTW, we read the book Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child, which I think has a great guideline for how much sleep a typical child needs at a given age.

My 2 1/2 year old daughter goes to bed around 8:00pm. (I don't know what time she actually falls asleep because we let her look at her books in bed) She usually wakes up around 8:30am. She's not in much of a hurry to let me know she's awake though. Usually I'll hear her playing around in her room and go in to get her. If she hears me coming she'll hide under her blanket and laugh when I act like I can't find her. :-)

I NEED HELP! LOL I have a 5 yr old and a 14 mo old. Both boys. My husband is self employed and we go to work with him. We have no routine or schedule. Everyday is diffrent and unpridictable! It's been 2 weeks since my baby last nursed and that was hard! He put up a fight. Now since this will be our first year in kindergarten I want the boys on a schedule and I want couple time too! Even if it's just watching a movie! The kids have always slept w/us and now we are putting them in their rooms. They don't nap much and they have always been night owls. I've slowly moved up their sleep time from 2 or 1 am to 10 or 9:30. They still wake up at least twice in the night and end up in our bed. How do you guys get them sleep so early??? I know I need to fix a lot but how do I get them to stay asleep?

Tara, I understand. I hate this in between stage. I think you will find most toddlers this age are very similar, that is why I do the every few days thing - it is my daughter's catch up. She copes with it better now, but yes, it is really hard to find a balance with a child who seems to need very little sleep.....



I honestly have coped with my daughter by trial and error.



I also ENFORCE rest time. She won't sleep during the day (except when she crashes after preschool occasionally), but I expect her to have at least 1 1/2 hours quiet time after lunch. What I usually do is put on a movie for her and sit her on the lounge, or I give her some books. This is quiet time for her (she is not allowed of the lounge, and has a pillow to lie down on, and sanity time for me, LOL. This seems to help a lot. Toddlers are on the go so much, I force her to slow down a little. Have you tried this?

I have two girls and a boy, I have tried cutting out the nap unless she wants to take an early morning cat nap.. what will happen is the day will progress and she gets terribly cranky, and then while I am making dinner next thing I know I look over and she passes out on the couch. Then you try to wake her and there is not hope the rest of the night is a down hill battle you either have waken her up and now she is cranky and throwing tantrums for 3 hours until bedtime, or you let her sleep and she wakes up when people should be going to bed.
