I read through several replys but not all so if someone already brought this up I apologize. But just to let you know an IUD is technically NOT birth control as it does not prevent the implantation of sperm to egg. In fact it doesn't even technically prevent the fertalized egg from implanting to the unterian wall. and IUD removes the implanted egg from the wall. So simply you are giving yourself an abortion, I know this may not be a popluar or plesent thought. However for those who are of the belief that abortion is wrong and that life begins at conception: and IUD IS NOT THE METHOD TO USE. For practicality I recommend the NuvaRing... It's once a month, easy to use and contains no more hormones then the pill but without the moos swings and hormone spikes.

I wanted a IUD so bad but wasnt able to get one, so I am on the nuva ring and I love it. I could never remember to take the pill at the same time, or even everyday. The nuva ring is so nice because I only have to think about it twice a month. However, it does have some down falls. I (and my husband), have noticed intense mood swings the last week of the month. I have been taking it for 3 months now and every month has been the same. Also my husband says that he can feel the ring durring sex, not painful, but he can feel that it is there. I have heard great things about the IUD!! My sister in law has one and loves it. Hope this helps

I have marena and i absolutely love it. the first two months afterwards i had constant spotting, but it tapered off and now i have no period at all. The best part is that i don't have to remember to take anything, and once it is paid for there is nothing more to buy for 5 years. i found that even with my insurance pitching in for the pill or the nuva ring that it was still cheaper to pay the $1,000 for the dr. to put it in, and that was a one time fee for the next five years. it was that much cuz it wasn't covered by my insurance, but it might be with yours. Still I wouldn't have gone any other way. It is absolutely amazing!

After I had my daughter in April I started on Nuvaring, and it's GREAT! You don't have to have anything inplanted in you, but you don't have to keep up with it every day... put it in for 3 weeks then take it out for one. Very simple!!

As a mother of 4 i use a IUD. Its been on the market and research has been done. You may only have one partner, it is a simple implantation (like having a pap), you can't feel it, it is attached by a string then cut, if you want the string shorter then ask, its your natural hormones not chemically induced, i will bleed for 2 heavy days, costs around 300 (cost) and it lasts from 5-10 years! The way it works is it reshapes the uterus and once the egg enters its in an unstable enviornment. I not I chose not to use the minera due to the simple fact that its only on the market for a couple of years and your periods are minimum sometime almost none. A women needs estrogen to maintain her beauty and good skin! Good luck!

Quoting Patti:
Amanda, My daughter had an IUD and it was a dreadful experience with lots of unexpected side effects. I would never recommend it to anyone. Its function is to disturb the lining of the uterus, causing an environment inhospitible to an already fertilized egg. It basically disrupts the uterine lining and can cause cramping and sometimes bleeding. If you believe as I do that a new person is created each time the sperm and egg unite to form the DNA of a new baby, then an IUD could be regarded as a method of abortion--just earlier, before it begins to look like a baby. All the chromosomes and dna are there for a unique human being. The use of an IUD is simply causing it to starve for nourishment before it can get very far along in its development. Amanda, is that darling little cherub in the picture yours? I know that a new baby can be overwhelming, and everything in our culture is probably telling you that raising a child is going to cramp your life, making having a second anytime soon sound rather horrifying when you consider how tired you feel right now. I want to encourage you however, Dear. I have seven children now--the youngest is 17 and the eldest is 35. Six of them are boys/men and one a lady. Some are doing well and others not. However, I would not trade the richness they have brought into my life ever. There are many things our culture is rather upside down about in its values. Bringing children into this world is one of them. However, you need resources to give you strength and encouragement. Here are a couple of websites I can recommend:www.FlyLady.net and NoGreaterJoy.org. You can come visit my wall too: Patti Strout
Thank you for this post! I have been asking around (my GYN and other women who use/have used the IUD method of birth control) and I am astonished that it's so popular. The literature it comes with states they are not completely sure how it works...but certainly part of how it works is that a fertalized egg is less likely to attach itself within the uterus because of the implant. So what could be happening each month is a miscarriage not prevention of fertalization! I'm considering what to use myself and I was leaning towards the IUD because so many people recommend it but now I am looking into other options. Thank you so much for clarifying!

I was on Depo Provera after giving birth. It made me "crazy" according to my husband. So he had a vasectomy, because tubal ligation is more invasive and required a hospital stay. Tubal ligation and vasectomy are the best birth control methods after abstinence.

I got Mirena right after my son was born and I haven't had any problems with it. My period was light for a month or 2 right after I got it, but I haven't had it since (2 years later). It's my understanding that very few women have problems after having it removed as well. And the best part is I don't have to remember to take any dern pill! lol (By the way, I never missed a pill, but did get pregnant while on a generic pill...)

Quoting Katrina:
I have had the mirena IUD for about 3 months now and all is good - very little bleeding (only a very light period - still irregular though) but my body is still adjusting. I have no complaints. It has very little side effects is 99.9% accurate and lasts 5 years. There are apparently no worried about getting it taken out if I decide to have more children. My Obstrecian highly recommended it and said she does at least 5 a week!
There are more side effects to Mirena than you might think. I've been on it for over a year, and have been having all sorts of effects because of it, most of which I didn't even realize were because of it till I went and looked at the website. I'm going to have my doctor take it out next month when I have my yearly appointment, and if I have another baby my boyfriend will get snipped. He's thinking about doing it now anyway, but I'm still hoping for another child so he's waiting until we can come to an agreement.

I was really bad at taking the pill and so I had my first child, then i went back on the pill and hubby wore a condom and i still ended up pregnant with child number two. I talked to my mother and she told me about the IUD. You dont have to remember to take anything and its just a doctors visit. They are very good for people who only have one partner and most likely marries. Most doctors wont put one in unless you are married or with only one partner. With multiple partners you can run into getting an infection and that can cause problems with the IUD. Go to webmd.com to check it out.

I decided to get Merina after my second child. I had the pill after my first and it did'nt work out to well. It's good for 5 years. I have had it for six months and haven't really had a period at all. Just some spoting for a few days or not at all. (No, I'm not prego) The nurse said that I'd probably get a scare the first time I didn't get it, and I might not even get it at all. And best of all no cramps!!!

If your not sure about the implant just yet you should try Nuvaring. Ask your doctor about it. Remove it once a month to cycle then put a new one in. Easier than remembering the pill, but not as scary as the implant or the shot it you hate needles. I love it and will never use anything else.

I had the IUD for several years, within time it caused problems with my period and pain galore, I switched to Nuva ring.....way better and easier than birthcontrol pill....U insert a new one in leave it in there for 3 weeks, take it out for a week , you get your period then insert a new one...the hormones are not as intense as birth control pills, just like birth control pills you are not protected against pregnancy the first month.

Well hun, ever thought about abstinence??? Just kidding lol. Seriously though. I had a friend who went into toxic shock syndrome with the IUD and another with the coil. The patch has been recalled. It's actually been damaging to many women. Try the depo shot. Three months but your period is messed up a little. Pills made me sick. But I guess it depends on your body.

Hi, i cant have the pil due to medical reasons. I have had both types of iud. i have also had the deprovera injection. For me the parguard IUD was best. my period was a little off for the first couple of months but then went like clock work. i had this one for 5 years before i had it removed with no problems. i had the mirena iud put in 4 months latter when i met my new man ( now hubby) i had nothing but problems with that one. i gained a fair bit of weight had long and painful periods, had that removed after 12 months when we deciced to have another child was pregant 6 months later. the injection gave me awful migrains and unregular periods but cant be removed if there are problems so be careful with that one. But the IUD is fantastic nothing to remember nothing to worry about. hope this helps

i have the mirena IUD and love it, havent had a period since i got it implanted, got two years left on it and im willing to get another if im allowed to right away
I still get the PMS symtoms from time to time though. I tried the shot and it was ok to but it was hard to get in to get the shot every three months.
The pill really doesnt work great at all with a busy schedule as a mother.

I had an IUD it was the best ever. Before the IUD my periods were very very heavy, with the IUD it was done to 2 days of bleeding and very light. You don't have to worry about anything, it was a very simple procedure it was inserted in the office I had some cramping for the 1st day after that you can't even tell anything is there. I spotted for a month after the insertion.
Hope this helps.

Yes I have, it worked great! I had little to no period each month and never had to worry about taking a pill or putting a patch on. The only thing I didn't like was that I would occasionally get cyst like blemishes around my face and jaw line. That doesn't happen to everyone I am just prone to acne. Hope this is helpful!

I recommend that your obgyn do a blood test on you to figure out your best results, I found out that I have a Factor 5 deficiency, Lidmens, so I can't take anything with really high hormones, I could have a stroke. Normally younger mothers don't get tested because docotrs normally don't have to worry about there health as much. But if I would have took the pill or implant my chances of a stroke would have been over 90 percent. I have the Merena IUD, I bled for 6 months straight and now I have light periods, but my friend had the same thing and she quit having her period 2 months after having inserted, so everyone is different just make sure you check all your options.

I chose the 10 year b/c after 3 kids I am DONE! The only thing I have noticed is that my cycle is heavier. And I do take the Rx Naproxen and it helps, too! Good luck!
