This may not sound very nice but i would just lie. Say that they are cute even if there not. No mom (in my opinion) wants to hear that their baby isn't all that cute.

How can a baby not be cute? Mum told me I looked like a baby monkey when i was newborn lol...I think baby monkeys are real sweet...lmao...I agree with most of the other posts though..Just find something you can comment on but don't hurt mummys feelings..Her baby will be the best thing since sliced bread even if you don't agree...

I love babies and even the ones that don't look like royalty at birth are still so beautiful, They're all little miracles . Having said that, I always say how beautiful they are. I see nothing wrong with bringing a smile to mommy or daddy's face about their precious new baby!

So this is your cousin that has just been born!!! how cruel are you?? of course you say something nice!! Im guessing since you are part of cirle of moms that you are a mom too, how would you have felt if someone said OMG hasnt she/he got a smashed face!! That in my opinion is a terrible way to think about a child!

The ugliest baby I've ever seen is a half sibling to one of my kids, so they wanted to know my opinion. They knew the baby was not pretty. I simply told them "she looks so much like her mother!" and it was completely true. Play doh nose and all. Usually even the most "ugly" features come from one of the parents, and they do realize it, but you need to get past it because it is a child and they will learn what the things being said about them mean, and it does hurt. This is where a society based on looks first instead of personality can really have a huge impact, because a lot of these kids grow up to be sweet people regardless, and have been through a lot.

You say... wow, your baby is absolutely adorable. Of course I find even ugly babies cute in their own way. ;)

Personally, I am of the blunt persuasion usually...I flat out told people one of my kids was ugly...They got over it. LOL But born looking like a space alien picture from area 54. I agree with the find something nice, and honest, to say. What a cute outfit, look how tiny the fingernails are, aren't babies amazing, don't you love that new baby smell, etc.

My mom told me the "secret code" for this...

If a child is actually cute, the phrase includes "adorable".

If a child is not cute, but not ugly, it's "precious".

If a child is ugly (you know it happens), the phrase includes "sweet" (as the only word to describe said child.

I can't imagine actually asking someone what they thought of my baby. But if someone asked me what I thought of their baby I'd just say that he/she was so precious. Lets face it, even the butt-ugly babies are still precious little bundles. They are all beautiful in their tiny perfection ;-)

My best friend and I always talk about how babies look funny when they are first born and she is a very blunt person so she would tell me so and so's baby looks ugly or blah so when I was pregnant I told her she wasn't allowed to see my baby!! Anyways, she is hearing impaired and I watched this movie once where this lady was talking about someone's baby and she yelled (not knowing) that the baby was very ugly. I told my bestfriend I could totally see her doing that!!! Although with her it might be a little intentional haha. Anyways - yes lie I agree with everyone else. No matter what, the baby is cute and then as they get older and its someone you see alot you can start making fun of the imperfections - I do.

Yeah. My aunt just had a baby and asked me what I thought... I thought wow that baby has a smashed face... But I said she has a lot of hair lol

I hope she isn't in your circle of moms. I would lie, telling someone their baby is ugly is very bad. I would smack someone if they told me that. But I have the cutest baby ever.... :P

its not about the looks, its about what they are. A product of a mum and dad. If you like the mum and dad and are friends with them then all you are doing is sharing in the joy of new life and sharing in the pride of what they have created together. MOST babies, in my opinion, are not attractive, but my gosh they are ever so special regardless of there pushed in heads and squished up noses!!! Give the baby a cuddle and comment on how marveolous it is to meet them!!!

Please be kind and honest. Kindness never goes out of style! You could say something very neutral like “aaahhh! What a precious little baby” or “ WOW enjoy this time now you will have a very different looking person in a few short months. Babies just grow so fast. Honesty does not have to be cruel.

Just don't do what I did! lol... I ran into an old friend from high school, she had just had her second son, a month before my son was born, so he was about 2 months old... I told her he was sooooo cute... and then when my husband and I were walking out of the store, I was talking about how ugly that kid was, but that the older one was cute, so he still had a chance... the father was walking behind us to get something from the car, and I had no idea! LOL I felt horrible.

Their adorable!!!!! Doesn't matter what you really think, they only want to hear how beautiful they are. Hold you tongue till you get home and tell your spouse what an ugly baby you saw that day, and then be done with it.

Personally I would find something lovely to say... this is someones pride and joy after all! Something like "ahhh, look at her, hassnt she got lots of lovely thick hair, she's so lucky", or "what lovely long fingers, future piano genius", there is always something nice to say.. even if it's something like "what a lovely outfit she's wearing... doesnt it look adorable!". "sweet little ears" "such soft skin" etc etc. Hope that helps.

You can usually find something positive to say, frankly I don't think babies start to get cute until after 3 or 4 months, they are all pretty much butt ugly squishy red things before that. I would say though, especially if its a newborn if you do the she has Daddy's eyes etc that you don't just point out ONE parents features (even if they do all look like one parent) it can be hurtful and insensitive to the other parent. With dd all I heard for the first year was how she looked all like Daddy and not a thing like me, jokes about "we know who the father is but who's the mother?" etc...geesh really helped with the whole bonding thing :)

I'd lie! New moms can be very sensitive about their new babies and you could seriously lose a friendship if you told someone you thought their baby was ugly! Or at least try to find one thing you like about the baby - oh, what beautiful big blue eyes, or, Look at all that gorgeous brown hair or those cute chubby cheeks!

I was watching The View today and they were talking about this. :P

Barbara Walters said that she says 'Now that's a baby!'. I thought it was kind of funny.

But I don't see the harm in saying that they are cute, even if you don't think they are or like someone else mentioned talk about which parent the baby looks like.

Well, honestly I'm not a fan of babies, I think Most are ugly (Mine weren't of course!). So I would just simply say that I think babies are ugly, and to ask me again when they are moving around and have hair and teeth, lol!

Just tell them whoever you think the baby looks like. . ."Ohhh Bobby has your eyes or his dads nose."
