mainly first trimester because that is when you baby is developing. usually women eat what they want after this. thats why alcohol is really a no no in the first trimester but in the last it is not likely to do any damage. i had mayo through out my whole pregnancy and coleslaw, i think i stayed away from seafood though i might have had some prawns around christmas but not many

It becomes very hard to ignor DANGEROUS comments like this. Alcohol is never safe during pregnancy, so much so, if you are caught drinking childrens aid can be called, and they can remove the child from your care as soon as it is born. In my city ALL resturants and bars have signs up at the doors explaining the dangers of drinking and pregnancy, and explain that this resturant/bar will not serve if you are pregnant. If any trimester is the "safest'  it is the first trimester, they only say this cause most woman dont know they are pregnant until 2-3 month, and therefore do not stop drinking. A fetus does most of its major developing during the 2 and 3 trimester not the first, the major brain development happens during the 8th month, organs mature during the 2nd and 3rd trimester, and lungs mature during the 9th month.

Please stop telling moms its ok to drink during pregnancy, it is NEVER acceptiable to drink while pregnant once you know you are!

youre wrong the first 3 months are vital that everythign is done right. any nurse will tell you this so not sure where your getting your info but its fine your free to your opinion. its the mums choice really if she drinks while pregnant and im not sure what country you are in but it most definately is not illegal. if the baby did the major developing in the last trimester then all the prem babies would be dead so really what you are saying makes no sense. but anyway not going to argue have a good one

I'm a nurse in Australia and I can tell you that ALL trimesters are as important and that ALCOHOL IS NEVER OK!  IN my training days a patient was reported to DOCS before her baby was even born because of her drinking!!!!

You can eat prawns but in moderation as they contain mercury, no soft cheeses nothing that contains raw or partially cooked eggs, no oysters etc. Basically nothing raw, try to avoid salads, coleslaws from take aways shops, but home made is ok. They also advise to be cautious when eating Chinese as they are also a risk. And of course alcohol, it is NEVER safe, even though some post may say so. Caffeine is ok in small amounts, ie 1 cup of coffee per day.

I say talk to your doctor. I nearly went crazy with the varying restrictions in different books. The only restrictions my doctor gave me were fish high in mercury, like Tuna and limit caffeine. She even said it was okay to have a glass of wine from time to time (which I never did). I avoided raw eggs and fish. I couldn't eat coleslaw because it gave me the most painful gas when I was pregnant! You'll see different restrictions everywhere, so check with your midwife or doctor, and listen to your body.

i was told to keep away from cheeses such as brie, mayo that is homemade(jarred stuff like hellmans is fine) i think they say no to prawns etc in case u get food poisoning as it can harm the baby! they say peanuts u should be careful of but my son was more at risk as my partner has an allergy to peanuts! i gave up caffeine, altho u can still drink some but not too much.

make sure eggs are not runny and everything is cooked!!!just be sensible really x

first of all.....1 drink is okay perhaps to celebrate...i didn't because i didn't see the point in it..i don't think this person is saying to down a bottle of vodka

youre right im not. personally i would be too scared to drink more then half of a pre mixed during pregnancy and even that was just when i visited my mother and she gave me a cruiser. usually id have a few sips and throw the rest out. but i was just talking in general because i know most doctors say in moderation its fine. they will never know  how much alcohol is safe during pregnacy so really its best to avoid it all together but not compulsary i see many drink quite a bit and i dont judge

basically what everyone is saying is true. The red meat thing. Alcohol, caffeine (although I am sorry to say that I do have 2 or 3 cups of half/caf coffee in the morning and then none for the rest of the day) mostly it is about moderation. During my first pregnancy all I wanted in the world was tuna and I was told I couldn't have too much of it. Like a can a week or something. I was devasted! But you know. For the most part you can eat anything.

all the rules have changed on what you can eat when your pregnant. you can now eat peanuts when pregnant. so its best to ask the midwife.

According to my doctor no white cheese, shell fish -sorry no prawns:( and of course caffeine and alcohol. Also you need to stay away from lavender products, especially in the first trimester. Good luck! I'm counting the days until I can have a prawn again. Only three more months to go. It does get easier though. Just don't go anywhere that you might be tempted.

Lol - I have been reading the posts and already there are a number of things I either didnt or couldnt stick to (junk food and coke were the only things that had any chance of staying down for most of my pregnancy). Im an 'everything in moderation' kinda girl. The only thing I really avoided was lettuce -partially because it one of the most vile things to throw up but also because browned lettuce is apparently one of the worst sources for listeria. Sorry - thats all from me now :)

Most foods are fine during pregnancy. As other posters said, caffeine is a no-no and alcohol is a definite no-no. You have no idea how alcohol will effect your baby. Some women can drink heavily with no apparent harm, others take 1 or two drinks and it affects the baby. Better to play it safe. Of course, you should not smoke or take illegal drugs, in fact do not take ANY medications that are not specifically cleared with your OB/GYN. Even regular doctors will often give you things you should not take when pregnant- you have to ask your OB. Watch herbs- herbal supplements and teas seem innocent but many of them are powerful drugs which can affect the baby. Eat sweets and junk food in moderation. Your blood sugar tends to be high in pregnancy (in order to better nourish the baby) but if you eat a lot of sweets it is not good for you or the baby, will give you uncomfortable blood sugar swings and will cause you to gain too much weight. Other than that, I know of very few restrictions. Soft cheeses, very rare meats, sushi, really anything that is likely to contain large amounts of bacteria or toxins that normally your body would easily get rid of but which could go through the placenta to the baby. I know of no restriction on seafood at all. I love seafood and ate gobs of it all the way through all 4 pregnancies. You'll have to ask your doc about that.

I dont know about prawns but the mayo and the coleslaw - they say no but I couldnt stick to all the rules. I just made sure that on the occassions I did have these that they were fresh - if it looks like its been out for a while or quite old I would avoid it. If its fresh then I would treat myself to small amounts every so often. It depends on how comfortable you are with eating things that are on the official 'no' lists

Firstly you should talk to your doctor. I do know that rare red meat, soft cheeses, raw fish and caffeine are to be avoided. Of course I didn't really avoid anything (except alcohol) and both my children were born quite healthy.
