I have an almost one year old son and have just found out I am pregnant again. We have being trying to wean him from the breast for a few months but it hasn't gone very well, he seems totally addicted!!! We would really like to sleep train him (as he hasn't slept much ever!!!) but are unsure if we should wean first.

both of my daughters weaned themselves when i got pregnant again. I would say wait for a month or 2 and see if he doesn't just wean himself from the breast.

Quoting Bave:

I have read some books that breastfeeding while pregnant can cause miscarriage..because there are some nerves in the breast that cause contractions... its better you have your first child trained in sippy cups or feeding bottles for his milk...

As Zoe pointed out, this is only a concern if you have a compromised pregnancy or a history of miscarriages. If you have a 'normal' pregnancy then this is not an issue.

Zoe is also right is saying that sometimes babies self-wean when their mother is pregnant due to changes in the breastmilk. This is not always the case though...

I think there's no wrong or right answer to this. It sounds like you have decided you want to wean him, but you shouldn't let the fact that you're pregnant dictate that if you want to continue. You don't have to wean a baby to get them on a sleep schedule :)

I know it's not helpful to say this but... do what feels right to you :) Good luck!

You don't have to wean your son just because you're pregnant. However, if it's something you want to do anyway, then by all means, that's your choice. Many women breastfeed through pregnancies (as long as it's a healthy, uncomplicated pregnancy, you should be fine) and go on to tandem nurse. I have many friends who tandem nursed and my daughter nursed until I was 20 weeks pregnant with my son. I wouldn't have objected to her nursing longer, but she self weaned because she was just ready to wean (she was 4yo). You can find more information here at www.kellymom.com... http://www.kellymom.com/nursingtwo/resou...

If you do choose to wean him (and you can get tips on weaning on the kellymom site as well), I would look at his pattern of nursing to see which would be easiest to achieve first. What is his sleep like now? Does he *almost* sleep through the night? I would tackle the easiest thing first and get him well established with that and then go on to the next thing.

Another thing to keep in mind as well, is that a certain percentage of children self wean when their moms are pregnant because the milk changes taste (due to hormones) and the milk supply decreases. So he may very well wean himself. He may not.. but he just might.

Do you have a routine set up for feeding and sleep / relax time? Things will hopefully fall into place with his sleeping if you stick to a routine throughout the day. A gradual weaning process is best once you've established a routine. I hope it gets easier for you. good luck.

" Take your time & wean him, just be sure that you set a deadline date to have him wean before the new one arrives, give your breast a break. start getting sippy cups for your son now with water and maybe a little juice to start weaning him & getting him used to sipping from the cup. Good Luck to you!
