My clinic nurse told me that babies should actually be crawling before they sit. This is how they develop muscle strength to sit on their own. With help they can do it much earlier, but don't wish away the time it goes past so quickly.

My daughter is five months and can sit in kind of a tripod fashion, with her arms on the floor between her legs. She's getting there, probably about another month or so. But she has been trying to sit up from a lying position for a while. It's kind of funny watching her do little baby crunches.

My daughter Lexie started sitting at 6mths then she started crawling at 7mnths she is now pulling herself up on the furniture at 8mths but every child is different and as much as you want them to start doing things just be patient and enjoy him because when he starts sitting you will have to watch him, they loose their balance same with crawling and pulling themselves up on furniture. Lexie is constantly sliding and falling over which is quite upsetting for all of us because she bumps her head then cries which sets of my 7yr old who doesn't like her being sad.

6 - 8 months is ussually about the time they start sitting up but remember every baby is different. My daughter who is now nearly 3 didn't sit up by herself till she was nearly 8 months. My son, now 4 months is showing far more mobilty than his sister did at the same age and will probably be quicker at milestones such as this.

my daughter started sitting up around 6 months with a little help. She is now nearly 8 months and can sit up all by herself.

He'll probably start trying soon, mine did. But my little guy (and he is little, he's a little bobble-head still as he's a bit underweight) didn't really start sitting unassisted (for short periods) until about 2 weeks ago at about 7 months. You could get him a bumbo chair, that might encourage him to start start sitting.
