When did your period return after birth?

[deleted account] ( 17 moms have responded )

My postpartum bleeding ended around 3 weeks after birth. Had dwindled away to pretty much nothing a week before that. Was thoroughly enjoying not having any more bleeding. And then a week later (4 weeks after birth), I have bleeding again.

It is pink/red and was quite soft yesterday, bit heavier again today. Not super heavy but feels like a normal period for me. Saw a doctor about it today, and because I am having no pains or other symptoms, they aren't worried. But again, they dont think its my period as I am exclusively breastfeeding so should return for 3 - 6 months.

What were your experiences? Did your bleeding start and stop? How soon did your period return??

Jenna what happened to you happened to me.After 3 weeks or so I stopped bleeding for maybe a day or two and then I got the worst period ever minus the cramps. I think it lasted a week and a half. I was breastfeeding too.

I bled after having my kids for about 6 weeks and then had a period anywhere from 1 to 4 weeks after the post partum bleeding stopped. Everyone is different and each recovery is different from birth to birth.

Yeah I exclusinely breastfed my first before he started solids at 5 months and I got my period back pretty fast. Better to be safe then sorry. Even your doctor should know that breastfeeding is not a good form of contraception. You can easily become pregnant.

After the initial bleeding of about 3 weeks, I had my first period at about 2 months postdelivery with my daughter. I had it every month until I got pregnant with my son 2 1/2 years later. Once he was born, I had about 3 weeks of postpartum bleeding and then the periods started again at about 2 months postdelivery. I BF both of mine.

ANY doctor who tells you that breastfeeding is a contraception NEEDS to go back to Sex Ed 101! Otherwise why would babies be born 11 months apart with the mom breastfeeding the older one?

Even if your postpartum bleeding stops, it's possible to have break-through bleeding that's not necessarily a period. Especially if you have an increase in physical activity. Since you're EBing, I would doubt you had a period, but anything's possible.

BFed both my kids.. 1st one got my period back at 8 months. 2nd one, got a period at 5 months, then not again until 15 months.

Post-partum bleed was for just under 2wks.
I began regular periods 2wks later, and yes i was breastfeeding.

I didn't get my first period until 6 months after post partum bleeding as I am exclusively breastfeeding my daughter.

With my first baby, my regular period came back about a month after I stopped pumping (at about 4 months). This time however, it came back around the same time but was more like spotting and it was happening almost every day. I went to the doctor, and it was actually just estrogen breakthrough bleeding, not a real period. I had to take Provera for 10 days to reset my system so to speak, and it got better after that.

I am exclusively breastfeeding and I got my period the day my daughter turned 2 months old.

I had to argue with the doctor re going onto contraception as according to him, i should be safe up to 6 months breastfeeding. I am glad I argued to go onto the mini pill just in case.

I didn't breastfeed so the post partum bleeding stopped fully about 6 weeks after the birth (the bleeding did stop and start a bit) and then I started getting my period as normal every month about 2 months later. Some women don't get their period back for ages if they breastfeed.
