When do you take your child to the ER vs seeing a doctor in the morning?

My son has had a fever off and on for the past almost 7 days. When I first called the doctor they said to call back if he still had a fever after 5 days. On the third day he had no fever, then got one on days 4 and 5. I did call, and they said he should be better the next day b/c they thought it was Roseola. (he had littl bumps) The next day he was a little better but then he got a fever again today. Should I wait for office hours or take him straight to the ER asap?

I would wait until the next day, unless the fever gets worse or gets past 104.0F. Try giving him a bath, cool fluids, popsicles, and lightly dressed. If that doesn't do anything to the fever try tylenol or IB profin, if nothing works to keep the fever down, then something needs to be done.

I agree! The doctors clinic my daughter sees has 24/7 nurses line. I just call the number for the office and it tells me to call back in the morning or wait on the line for someone to assist me.

I would take him to a walk in clinic or urgent care. Honestly they don't do much in the ER. They acted like I was an over reacting mother when I took my daughter in with a 103F, because she had been seen the day prior in the ER for seizures.

A lot of insurances now have a free nurses line that you can call 24/7. They could tell you better if this is something where he needs to be seen right away and where to go.
