I would ask friends or moms that you know in your area to see who they recommend and who they really like. Then call up those pediatricians and ask some questions like What number do I call if I need you after hours? How do you handle shots? Does the dr believe that an infant should be rearfacing until they get to be 1 yr old AND over 20 pounds? Is there more than one dr there so if you need to be seen during the day a dr will be available so you dont have to wait til your dr is there?? What I mean by this is my Pediatrician is there only a few days a week but there are also 5 other drs that work there during the week and I like to see our Pediatrician but if my child is sick I like to get them in that day if possible even if our dr is not working that day. I do make the well baby checks with my pediatrician since he has been seeing them since they were born. Good Luck.

well it is really good to start right away because by the time the baby is 3 you might change your mind obout 5 times until you are happy with the ped. that is taken care of your child. it will feel right in your gut.

i have 4 months to go. A friend at work suggested a dr and when i looked at the hospital booklet the dr wasnt listed. Now i am not sure what to do. My dr gave me a list to call and just wasnt sure when to call. Thanks for all the advice. Im going to start soon.

My son arrived a few weeks early so I was not fully prepared. The Ped that was there for him in the hospital is still his Ped to this day. I saw, firsthand, how well he did with my son so I did not have to look any further! (My son is now 15 months, so it's been awhile).

Good luck!

I went out and interviewed a few a couple months before my son was born. However I ended up choosing the ped that was on staff at the hospital...my OB scheduled me when the ped that she thought would fit best for us was on call.

I found a pediatrician and called them the month before my son was born. They said to call them after he was born and they would set up his first appt. If the pediatrician you choose doesn't have privileges at the hospital where you deliver then your baby will see the one that's on call.

It's best to do it any time before you give birth. Sometimes the hospital (if you will be going to a hospital) will have good suggestions.

I waited to pick one until I was in the hospital after delivery. My daughter surprised us a few weeks early. I was soo stressed out trying to pick a ped quickly. Find your pediatrician as early as possible!!! It will relieve a lot of stress.

I chose mine about 2 months before I had my first kid. It lets you go out and meet a few and see who you feel comfortable with. good luck
