When is it ok for children to stop believing in Santa and The Tooth Fairy?

My daughter is 7 and still believes in Father Christmas and The Tooth Fairy which I think is lovely. The other day her two friends (aged 6 and 8) were in her bedroom playing and the 8 year old started to tell my daughter and her 6 year old friend how silly they were for still believing as "it's your mum and dad that buy your presents and put the tooth fairy money under your pillow". My daughter argued for her beliefs and the 6 year old just looked crushed. Thank goodness I had heard and defused the situation a little but I am still waiting for the big question from my daughter.....
Am I wrong to want my daughter and her friend to hold onto to this magical part of their childhood for a little longer or is it time that she knew?

No. In fact, I'd be a little ticked at the 8 year old. Her parents should have explained to her to keep her mouth shut. My son's 4 year old friend told him her parents said there isn't one, that they buy the gifts. I outright lied to him and said there was. He's only 3. I'm hoping he'll get another 8-10 years of magic left. They only get such a short time in their lives to be a kid, these beliefs for me are part of it. No one has the right to rob them of that. No one.

My son is 6 but at Christmas this year he was questioning whether Santa was real. I always replied that I believe in him, but let him know not everyone does. We also told him that the mall Santa's are just Santa helpers they aren't the real ones that way he doesn't question why Santa is in so many places at once. I don't know how long he'll believe but I do think even when he stops he will continue playing along for his 2 year old sisters sake.

Since the tooth fairy brings money I'm pretty sure even if he doesn't believe he will never say it :) I don't think it's wrong to want them to believe!

Thanks for that Louise - glad I'm not in the minority wanting to keep the magic going :-)

My sons are 21 and 18 and I have never confessed to them it is part of the spirit of Christmas. My daughter is 3.5 years old and loves christmas and easter bunny, tooth fairy and just plain old fairies. It is lovely to have an imagination. Of course your kids get to an age that they dont believe any more but you dont have to confess. Play along with it. My sons have. The magic of Christmas is still alive in our house and always will be. With my children and eventually my grandchildren. There are some things you do to keep your children interested in magic moments and father christmas is one of them.
