When should I put my baby on a sleep schedule?

'12 weeks or 12 lbs' is when babies TEND to sleep through .. and sleep schedules are NOT a good idea at all. A baby knows when it needs feeding, for food or comfort. It knows when it is 'growing' and needs more .. or is needing less. Babies are not little machines.. they don't sleep to time.. or feed to time. When we didn't have clocks babies were fed when THEY needed.

with both my son who is 2 and my daughter who is 12 days, i started right when we got home from the hospital putting them down for "bed" when i went to bed..around 10, before i put them down i gave them a bath, pjs and a bottle..that way they were used to getting a bath before bed. my son started at 8 weeks sleeping from 10 to 5 and my daughter at one week sleeps 10 to 2 then wakes every three hours...

Thank you all for your comments. What I learned is that we need a schedule. I need to set a precedence for him to follow. He will do the rest. Last night we tried a new schedule. After his 2 o'clock nap when he woke at 4, we stayed awake instead of sleeping at 6pm. We showered at 630pm then slept by 730. He slept till 1230am. We fed and he slept till 430am. He fed again and slept till 7am. I have not slept this much since my second trimester.
Hopefully we shall continue this way. Thank you.

Gosh, this is something I never had to think about... we always had a set bedtime routine - bath, bottle, bed - for ours. DS1 slept through at about 4 months; DS2 at 3 weeks (but he was an elephant, big babies tend to do this earlier!); and DD at 9 weeks. They all slept in their own rooms from the beginning, and we still keep their bedroom doors open and a light on overnight on the landing for them; not sure if these were contributing factors or not.

I am a mom of three and I learned after my first just how important a schedule and sleep schedule is. In my experience the sooner you get the baby on a at least nightly sleep schedule the better and easier it will be for you and the baby. With my second and third I would get a bedtime routine started (ie. changing,swaddling, feeding, burping, rocking, and laying them down before they were sleeping-in their own bed) and have their original bedtime be midnight (since that was the time I would go to bed). And slowly I moved up the bedtime hour by hour until they were going to bed at 8:30/9pm every night. but use the time that works the best for you and your family. And every baby sleeps thru the night at different ages.

My son is 10 weeks old. He sleeps from 6-9pm then thereafter he wakes every 2 hours. Before he goes to sleep at 6pm we always go to the bedroom and I sing for him. But he does not sleep for longer than 3 hours. He startles a lot even with the swaddling he wakes up trying to get out.

each baby is different but at around 5 months I always gave my daughter a bath at about 7 an bed by 8..she didnt start sleeping through the night till she was 11 month old though!! now she takes a nap at noon ish..bath at 7 bed by 8 sleeps till 8am! what ever your time it is always night to start a routine..a bath calms them b4 for bed..lets them know that after my bath i sleep! good luck

a sleep schedule is very important...basicly a schedule in general is very important. There's no point in making an eating schedule if you dont have a sleep schedule. When babies get use to a schedule, the feel like they are in control of something. If your baby feels in control of his bedtime then he wont fight it. My child is 23 months old, and has been sleeping 8pm-8am since he was 2.5 months old. A good schedule is a happy baby and then a happy toddler. Good luck!

Kids sleep through the night when they do. There is no set age for when it is supposed to happen by simply because there are far too many factors that play a role. How old is your baby?
What I would suggest is start a bedtime routine and go from there. Even an infant will appreciate the soothing aspects of it.
