Ok so the midwife recommends not to use wipes and only cotton wool and water until 4 weeks of age as earlier use is related to eczema and similar skin conditions. But I know peoeple to have used them sooner and their babies have not reacted. Is this something that will purely depend on the baby and the kind of skin they have?? And also, would this apply to other products like baby bath and shampoo and what not??

My children have allergies to just about everything, and I used wipes from the start. The doctors never adviced me not to. The nurses in the hospital even used wipes when they helped change them. My daughter had eczema, but on her legs. Not on her behind from wipes. Some midwifes still beleive in old wise tells. If you are concerend, call a pediatrtion nd ask them before the baby comes. But keep in mind all doctors have different opinions and beliefs. Do what works for you and your child. Some children perfer one over the other. Good Luck.

I used the sensitive wipes as soon as I was home from the hospital, same with baby soaps and regular old laundry soap, but no fabric softener. My daughter never had a problem and at six mo we added fabric softener. However, my daughter gets bad diaper rashes when teething. At that time we don't use wipes and wash her in the sink with a baby wash cloth. I think pay attention and you'll do fine. If your baby is sensitive, you might have to make some changes. I have friends with a daughter who has excema and they don't use wipes. Do what your situation requires.

i never had a problem using johnson and johnson's shampoo, body wash, lotion, cornstarch etc. i also used wipes from the start, the name brand 'sensitive' ones. the only had a problem with a 'true' diaper rash at which time is good to just use water and wash cloth as well as air drying etc. hope this helps!

They do make chlorine free, scent free, dye free, alcohol free wipes. Don't know if you're in the US or if they have Whole Foods over seas but that's where I found them.

After using them for the first month with my first I ended up getting horrible cracked and dry hands, which makes the eczema on my right hand worse.

My second has pretty sensitive skin, so we just don't use them. A good ol wash cloth and warm water always does the trick.

I have never heard of this. My baby girl has been using wipes since she came home from the hospital. I would just use the regular wipes, unless you do see a reaction with your little one. If you have any more questions though about what kind of reactions you would see, I would talk to your baby's doctor.

I'd never heard that - I used wipes from day dot. I just make sure I have the fragrance free wipes for sensitive skin as thats what other people had recommended from their experience.

My daughter was in the SCN for 2 weeks after she was born, and they actually provided us with, and recommended, a soft washcloth and warm water. I did continue at home for a few weeks, but then started using the scent free ones. We didn't have any reactions, but if we ever had to use the ones with scent, she reacted. Just wanted to relate my experience to help you. But my experience is that 4 weeks isn't such a long time to do this, so I'd go with the recommendation :)

I've never heard anyone recommend not using baby wipes. There's all types of wipes out there now. Wipes are avalable for newborns that have no fragrance, or harsh chemicals in them - those are usually named "sensitive". You can even find organic wipes made with organic bleach free cotton and natural ingredients. Wipes are used in the hospital so I don't think there's anything wrong with them. I used the sensitive wipes from the moment I brought my son home and we've had no problems. I did start to notice a problem with the Johnson's baby lotion. Those do have some chemicals in them that can be irritants. My son started to get a raised bumpy patches on his legs and arms. I switched to Burt's Bee's lotion - which is 99% natural ingredients and the problem went away. Burt's Bees makes a whole line of shampoos, bath wash, etc.
