Will he suffocate?

Hi--I found a great solution to this at Babies R Us. It's a MESH crib bumper--totally breathable. It is very thin, but still provides a little cushioning and it really helps to keep arms and legs from getting stuck between slats--which was what my problem was. Good luck!

we put our bumpero n upside down because at 8weeks baby was in her cot due to hers and dady's loud snoring making it impossible for mummy to sleep! She always went to the top of the cot within seconds, we tried swaddling, special velcro-close swaddling sheets, sleeping bags (gro-bag), everything, it was cold so ended up putting her at the top with her quilt and a bumper as she would wake up with marks where her head had dug into the rails. also she got her foot stuck a couple of times, the bumper stopped this but she would pull it and sleep under it! so we put it the other way up. tied at the bottom and tied it round the mattress slats instead of the rails so she only has a couple of inches to cushion her and nothing to smoosh into.



she's 14months next week and trying to open my dad's toolbox :p

I took the bumpers off when my son started moving around a lot, because he was hooking his legs and arms over the top and getting stuck, and they were pretty tall bumpers! Now he just sticks all his limbs out between the slats, but he usually doesn't get so upset about that. =)

personally I think that if your child is bumping his head and not waking up from it I would say to leave the bumper pads off the crib. The likely hood is that if he is not waking up after bumping his head on a hard piece of wood, he most likely won't wake up if his face is wedged in a piece of fabric which will result in SIDS. The current recommendation is to leave them off the crib and I quite agree with it until your child is at least 12 months. They still have a lot of developing to do before they know how to remove themselves from a situation such as being suffocated.

Amie - don't worry too much about it. I had my son sleep on his back because of SIDS concerns always when he was little but as soon as he was able to roll over he started sleeping on his tummy and he never looked back. This is the case for almost all the babies I know. Give him lots of tummy time during the day too so he can practice his rolling over and strengthen his neck muscles. That way he can roll back too if he ends up on his tummy in his crib if he wants to and can move his face sideways. There is no way to stop them, you just have to let it go.

i wouldn't put a bumper in unless it breathes... i was going to put one in (one of those thicker ones) when bub was 3 months coz he always was rolling around hitting his head on the rails and headboard, but 1 night i woke up and he had his head pressed upright into the rails and if there had been a bumper there he definately could have suffocated. it scared the shit out of me and i was so glad i had been too broke to buy the bumper the day before.

i think your son is still young enough to suffocate. my son is 7 months and still rolls around and hits into the rails (infact i can hear him doing it right now). if it is effecting your sleep then invest in some earplugs for a little while until you feel more secure.

take a look at onestepahead.com and search for breathable baby crib bumper. This is what I use- it's mesh, so they can breathe if they smoosh their little faces up against the side, but protects them from getting bumps or getting limbs caught between the slats.

Some of my friends put the bumpers back on their cots once their babies reached 6 months but current SIDs information recommends that no bumpers be put in the cot. It's hard because you don't want your son hitting his head (or other parts of his body) on the bars of the cot but you still need to consider the risks.

I used a bumper pad with all three of my kids from birth. My youngest is 9 months old and he has one in his crib. It isn't very fluffy, and it is tied tight so he can not get under it, I check it every day just to make sure that it is not coming untied.

this is a tough 1 it comes down 2 personal opinions...

when my duughter was born she was straight in a cot

feet at the end, and i had a bumber on in my oppinion if

its tight to the cotand all ties are out of sight so he cant get hold of them

he should be ok.... i also tucket the bumper between the mattress

and cot just to be sure she would be ok.

at the end of the day its ur choice.

my 4month old has been sleeping with a bumper since she was born, we just used a positioner. now that she turns and scoots and rolls over, its nice to have the bumpers cause the crib is hard. i think it would be ok for him to use bumpers. just make sure all the strings are tied tightly to the crib.

I have always used bumpers. I don't use any that are too fluffy and I make sure they are tied tightly to the crib, but I had the same concerns about my son hitting his head. I think at that age, when they are able to lift their heads and can roll over, it is fine. But that's my personal opinion.

I would personally leave it off. If it's not waking him up, it's better to be safe than sorry!
