Before you respond, please read ALL of this message. I don't want any opinions about how you agree with me, I don't want any scams, and I don't want anyone to try and sell me something. I just want an answer to my question and if you don't have one, please don't respond. Thank you.

Ok so I'm having a LOT of trouble finding a job in my area and it would be nice if I could find a job where I can stay at home. I have looked everywhere and so far have only found scams and uncertainty. I'm curious to know if there is a stay at home job out there where you actually don't have to pay ANYTHING to get started.

I live off of assistance right now because I don't have a job and not only can I not afford to pay money to start a job, but I also can't afford losing that money to a scam. It's supposed to be a job. Any other job you get you don't have to pay to get started. Why should one online be any different? The point of a job is to MAKE money, not give it away.

Anyone know of such a job? Or is it just a figment of my imagination?

data entry & bookkeeping can all be done from home. For bookkeeping you do have to do a tafe/uni/college course but that can also be done from home - you do have to pay for the course but depending on the programs in your area you might get them paid for or subsidied - not sure where you are writing from but in Australia bookkeepers earn $30.00 an hour to start............ and you can do it all from home :)

Thank you to everyone who has made some suggestions so far. I will be looking into some of them. I unfortunately can't do a whole lot of daycare right now. I babysit every Tuesday night but that's it. A few daycare's around town have had to close I guess because so many people lost their jobs when HTI laid off over 700 people within about a month. That's one reason why it's so hard to find a job. Those people snatched up every available job within a 30 mile radius practically and some businesses suffered because no one could afford to purchase anything from them and so they closed and now there are even less jobs.

Quoting Samantha:

Unfortunately, I don't have a whole lot of experience except for working as a cashier, waitress, and PCA (Personal Care Assistant). I am currently working on getting my FAFSA filled out so I can start school as soon as possible but having a little trouble because they are telling me I'm required to provide parent information which is not possible. I'm going to go for Universal Care Assistant but I need some sort of income while I do so. Until that is completed, my resume looks pretty lame.

from personal experience as long as you are over 24 (I believe) you shouldn't need parental financial info.  ALSO, if you can prove that you are financially independent from your folks that should work, too... if you are not quite 24 yet...

I don't blame you about jobs... I'll be in this same position in a few months.  I am a music major (performance) and don't have much of a resume, other than coffeehouses and freelance musician jobs.  I also live in Detroit which sucks BAD for jobs right now... even lame hourly jobs...  :(

thank you for posting this thread--it may help me as well... and I wish you luck :)

http://www.westat.com. You will have to purchase your own headset and have to have certain requirements on your computer. But I work for Westat and another company called West at home you will have to look it up on the internet. And I don't know what state you are in but I am in Oklahoma and I work for a company called Michatek. All of these are good companies. The only thing I had to get was my own headset. Hope this helps you out.

I am a stay at home mum but I also work full time as well, doing medical dicta typing.
If you have experience in the medical field you can make a living. Most of this work is outsourcing, in other words a "sweat shop". They pay you by the line, so if you do not work one day because you are sick, you don't get paid. recently they have introduced speech recognition, along with a 25% pay cut but for newcomers in this field it might be helpful because the computer generates the report and you basically correct all the mistakes, and they are calling us "medical editors". So finally, if you are a very fast typist, learn medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, pharmacology and perhaps attend college, this is an option. George Brown offers a 6 month course, I believe. My children are 9 and 11 and I have beeing doing this job since they were born. The flexibility is great as I worked around my children's schedules, not the other way around.
Good luck. JB

Do you have a favorite hobby that can be turned into a money-maker? Also, at this time of year, people will pay to have their gifts wrapped. If you like scrapbooking, that can relate into a full-time job at home! Lots of people don't have the time or creativity that it requires, and are eager to pay someone else to do it.

Good luck!

If you have any bookkeeping experience check on local businesses or apartment complexes. I live in a condo complex & do the paperwork for the homeowners association. Some apt complexs will let you be an offsite manager. You deal with the vendors, rental contracts, etc. If there is a problem you simply pick up the phone & call the appropriate vendor. I hope this helps. It looks like we all will have to move to India where our jobs have been outsourced. : )

About three years ago while I was pregnant with my second son, going to school online and desperate to find a way to make a bit of extra cash, I stumbled across a website: www.getafreelancer.com . It's not one of those get rich quick schemes, and there's a lot of competition for any of the freelance projects, plus you're competing with people where the cost of living is lower, so they're willing to work for less. Another downfall is that you have to pay a finder's fee to the site upon completion of the job. I did a couple of transcription jobs for this one lady through the site. Afterwards, she just contacted me through IM. I worked with her for about a year and a half. The pay wasn't great, but it was better than nothing. Also since I didn't have childcare or transportation costs, I felt comfortable with working cheap. Keep in mind that I didnt have any transcription experience, training, or equipment, which made it difficult. But I could type fast.

For me I have a licensed Child Care in my home. I make about $3400 a month. I have a total of 10 kids in care(not all at the same time) some are full time days and others are before and after school care. Its a great rewarding job and I have been doing this for almost 9 years. I live in Ontario, so I am not sure where you are but its certainly something to consider, if you enjoy kids and have the patience.

Listen sweetie, I don't know how clean or straight your place might be ,no pun intented I'm coming with the best intentions if your really in a bind, and have the patients and the space to accommodate a few extra little ones, that will keep you at home, helping others while you help yourself and if you get state certified you will do well, give it a try. Or if you have and know how to work a computer you find somekind of work , that pays over the computer I know it's hard out , but don't give.

There is a site called O Desk. Its a contracting job that you bid your price to people looking for computer help from your home. Its hard to explain, but all you have to do is read the info on how you do the work, take a test and start getting jobs from people thru your computer. Every day they send you info on who is looking for what. I got so far but never really got to the work part of it. It is free! You can check it out and dont have to sign up if you dont want to. It may help in bringing in extra cash.
Also, have you considered taking on a few kids during the day to watch? Alot of Moms need before and after school care at a reasonable price. Some of the ladies around here charge $30 a day or around $130 a week for full time. Sometimes Moms just need a day here and there to go to an appointment without the kids...Just an idea. The one lady here has a little christian place and does circle time, letter of the day, etc every day for the kids and she only has about 3 a week. Its really a blessing to know when you are at work someone wonderful is teaching and loving your kids as you would.
I hope these ideas help! Im a sahm too looking for a ft job too! Its hard!
Best of luck and Happy Holidays!

Honestly?

The reason why REAL work from home positions are so hard to find is because the few who know about them aren't telling.

We all know they're out there.

My mother tried a couple and just got scammed. I was a teen, she was going through a divorce and it broke her heart. It half killed me to see my mom trying so hard to find a way to be there for myself & my brother and just get ripped off.

Ask locally. Talk to job placement offices. DON'T ask online. All you are going to get are a one hundred little shit heads Private messaging you saying for $$ they can help you or no money now....

I know a couple of people who work from home as transcriptionists but that involves training and an opening in your area.

hang in there. If you strike now, hopefully you can get some seasonal retail work. Keep mentioning you're looking for permanent work, and when its appropriate mention you're looking for work you can do from home.

Good luck.

Some computer programming jobs can be done remotely. As well, if you have any experience as a writer, at times you can get contract work -- it may not be a steady source of income, though. You obviously write well and have excellent grammar and punctuation, so it may be worth contacting some publishers to see if they'd be willing to take you on as a proofreader.

Basically, ANY job that entails you working largely at a computer, and does not depend on you interacting face-to-face with people, can be turned into a work-from-home job. Don't wait to see "work from home" positions, as they are largely scams, as you've seen. You'll need to make your own opportunity, I'm afraid. The only pre-existing work-from-home jobs I've seen that look remotely appealing are those of reservation sales agents for hotels -- they sometimes advertise for work-from-home agents, but it's shift work.

I'm looking for the same thing as you (I live in the sticks, and there are NO jobs here, but I don't want to move, as my husband has a good job), and my background is in PR, so I've been contacting firms and saying that I want to work for them remotely (which seems to sound more professional than "work from home"), and have been offering to do copywriting work for them on a volunteer basis for a trial period, so that they can evaluate the efficiency of the arrangement. Where you're on assistance, that's something you could definitely do.

I hope this helps.
