Im starting to worry about my little girl, let me explain a bit more

since she was born shes always had a problem having a poo, she was breastfed for the first 4 weeks. then my milk dried up and didnt return so we put her on sma gold, we found she was still always hungry so we put her onto sma white for hungry babies. this seems to satisfy her hunger.

but a few weeks later she was screaming in pain when she needed a poo we took her to the dr's and they have given her some lactalose, again this has helped but she started having pains again when needing a poo, so we took her to the hospital who said she was fine.

Its now day 2 almost day 3 without her having a poo put still the screaming continues ive tried to help her go, massaging her tummy, giving her water, even giving her cartons of sma as im told it has a slight laxative in it.

but still no poo i hate seeing my little girl in pain, and she even cries with it. shes normally a once a day baby.

should i take her back up the hospital. im worried incase shes so constipated she cant get it out, or there is a blockage shes 3 months old

update

just got back from the dr's who again asure me she is fine, just struggling to poo and when she finally does go im to collect a specimen :-/

im begining top lose faith in these dr's they never tell you exactly whats going on etc

Ask your Doc about giving her more fiber. We made it until my son was 10 months somehow before we could not take it anymore when he would go it just seemed like so much work for him. Then after all the work it would be a small hard ball. His doc finally gave us some samples of Benefiber it's 100% natural. Because she is only 3 months ask the doc how much she can have. My son has been on the benefiber for one month now. And it's not a strugle for him to go anymore and the poo is alot softer. Good luck!!!!

I know what you are going through, it is tough when they are in pain. Don't panick. Take her to the Drs and ask them what to do next time, not all babys are the same, stay calm. My daughter is 41/2 months and has just started to do the same thing however she is B/fed apparently this is not uncommon for b/fed baby's 8 days she went without pooing. I think when they are formula fed it is different, I have just taken my bayb to the Dr.s and infant coloxyl drops were recommend to us and my mum used them on us and I was form. fed. Cool boiled water, cool boiled water with some brown sugar is also helpfull, you can also get from Heinz a Prune and Apple juice that is ready to use it is recommended for 6 month old so maybe discuss this with your Dr. GOODLUCK ! I'm sure everything will be fine.

I had the same problem with my son.... I hate giving my child laxatives, as I believe that it makes the colon "lazy".
I give my child honey water, and it seems to help.

I had the same problem with my son who is now 6. The gas drops did work pretty well, but at times not at all. The doctors repeatedly found nothing wrong and blamed it on immature bowels. (My son was 3 weeks early) I can say that with time he did improve and now he has perfectly normal bowels. He would just scream and push with all his might and turn beet read. I felt horrible. And he would also go days without a bowel movement. I worried myself to death. I had a 2 year old boy at the time who never exhibited these symptoms. So, I know this isn't much help, but hang in there, she will improve as her bowels mature. And definitely take her in to the hospital if you are concerned. Good luck....I know its tough! It doesn't help that each child is soooo different.... =)

i recommend goin bk to ur doc, or calling a health line for advice, if ur worried afta 2-3 days of no bm, c the doc, if ur not sure on the docs advice get a 2nd opinion, ur babys health and happiness is 1st a foremost on ur mind, we can all c that. Wen my son had slight constipation i wud give him juice less diluted than he wud normally have, but he never got to the stage ur at and i feel 4 u and ur lil girl. Hope u find ur solution and u get ur happy girl bk.

i would take her back to the doctors. in the mean time try to give her more water - my daughter was bottle fed from day 3 , formula is common for making babies a tad backed up , breast milk you dont have to worry about giving water in a sterile bottle. adjust your feeding schedual a little bit if its not feed time its water time :) hope this helps

My son had this same problem when he was a baby and we gave him light Karo syrup in water.

It did work for him, but you might what to still run it by your doctor.

Quoting Kim:

If u try a tsp of Light Karo Syrup per 2 oz of formula it might help. It did on my son when he had constipation and it worked great. I was told he could go 5 days without a poo by the doc and he usually would go by day 4. If not that is when I would give him the Karo.

I would take her to the doctor, as formula fed babies need to poo every day. Esp if she is in that much pain.

Sounds like you need to take her back just to be safe. Its normal for babies not to poop for a few days but the pain could be a blockage or even colic but its best to be sure. Good luck to you.

My little girl had the same prob she would just scream to, my nurse told me to put in her bottles an extra 20ml of water per bottle and Wow she can poo with out any pain and its a natural way with water they may just get hungry a bit early then the normal bottle but my bubs dont. i know how you feel my bubs was screaming all night once till we did the water or try about 20ml of weak camamile tea that worked to but not as good as the extra water in bottles

I always used Karo syrup. About a tsp karo syrup per 2 oz water. It worked wonders for my children.

Your doctor knows best, but I was advised by my doctor to give baby a tablespoon of corn syrup for minor constipation to loosen those bowels up. You can mix it with their bottle.

I always felt water was important to give once I stopped breastfeeding. You mention you are giving water, too. I offer water in between formula feedings.

Bless your little sweetie!

Warm water in a bottle, just a few sips will do wonders... also if she is having issues with the formula it's time to switch to Soy. We had to do that for our son... he is 14 months and on a daily dose of Miralax now. Before the Miralax they had us putting Cairo Syrup in his bottle, the lack of poo is from not enough water in his bowels. The more sugar in his system the more water his bowels brings in to breakdown the suagr which helps to pass the poo. Thermometer does help with a little Vasoline on the end... Just remember babies go days sometimes without pooping. If her belly is hard then she is most likely impacted. If her belly is soft and she cries after eating it's the lactose in the formula and you definitely need to switch to Soy. Jackson was a completely different baby after switching to soy and Cairo Syrup.

GOOD LUCK!

I would have to say i agree i would get her back there RIGHT away.. Let me explain alittle more.. My daughter was born at 36 weeks with Gastrochisis.. Which is a condition that all of her inside were outside her belly.. So this casues her alot of pain.. She to has problems with pooing from time to time do to Gastor.. I was told that if there is a bolck age it means surgery right away.. i know that is not what any mommy wants to hear.. She is always in pain when pooing.. so they have her on Miralax to help keep things moving on daily.. Part of her problem is that things don't work like they would in a "normal baby".. So if i were you i would not be ask what to do I would just be taking my baby to the hospital right away and telling them that there is something worng and that you are not leaving until they figure it out... Hope this might help take care

my niece has had problems pooing since she was born too. At fist they gave her punes, and just recently my mother-in-law told her parents to give her a little bit of miralax. It isn't a laxative so it doesn't make them crampy, or have any other nasty and uncomfortable side effects. Its a softener, so it makes her poo soft, so she can pass a normal bowel movement. good luck. I hope this helps.

Certainly take her to the ER. If they say she is fine I would start giving her a little bit of prune juice daily or even a few bites of baby prunes with some cereal. There are also small glyceren supositories that you can give her on occassion that she get constipated. A little apple juice will help too. Hope it helps. it sounds like she is getting to much iron and is getting constipated. I would change the formula. Good luck :-)

It might be that it is too hard to come out easily. I have a newborn that has been having trouble also so I just give him a little bit of water and that usually helps.

This may sound wierd, but my son had the same problem and the doctor said I could place a small part of the thermometer in the rectum area and this helps the babies relieve themselves. You can't do it all the time but it can be done. Also try more fluids as mine wasn't getting enough. If this doesn't work stay persistant and check out other pediatricians ( food allergies, or intolerances). Never take one doctor's. Good luck

Try a over the counter supository laxative for children, just her half the dose if she is younger then the age on the box. If it doesn't work within 12 hours, then I would take her back to the hopital and get x-rays done. try prune juice too.

Andrea - posted on 11/17/2009

YES, take her!!! ER first, then your doctor for a follow up. Sometimes they will tell you that the baby is fine, and you know she's not. Tell them that something is wrong, and you just know it. Also talk to your doctor. Write down everything that she hsas had in the past few months. If she's old enough, try applesauce. Adn Amber's right too, it could be that the gas is so much that it's causing blockage.ndut you dont' want her to end up needing a poo bag the rest of her life, so most definatley take her.

Veronica - posted on 11/17/2009

Yes you need to check with your doctor! She can not retain the waist in her belly for that long. Get her checked. I always try a spoon a day of baby prunes (GERBER). I know they dont like it but I have a hard time with my daughter too and that really helps out.

Kari - posted on 11/17/2009

Yes you should take her back immediately. If her bowels become backed up it could cause major infection in her colon! This is serious, if she is lactose intolerant she should be on soy or something like that. But yes, please take her to the hospital not her pediatrition. You don't want to wait for an appointment to come open.
