today i sat for 2 hours in a doctors office to be given decongestant for my 18 month old, from my understanding you shouldnt give them cough syrup or decongestant until they are 6, she said my daughter would be fine if i gave it to her and to just follow instructions on the bottle well the bottle says to tal kto physician about it first, so i dont even know how much to give her or how often and well i dont know if i feel comfortable about even giving this stuff to her since they say not to do so till 6 years of age. Should i just take her to see a diffrent doctor ?

I just came from the doctors with my daughter(age 2) as she had a high fever and a cough.  My doctor told me not to give my child a decongetant under any circumstances because they have been somehow linked to some deaths in children under the age of 8.  Although she did say that I could give her a cough suppressant.  A decongestant and a cough suppressant are different.( I then confirmed the information with my pharmacist before giving her anything).  If you do have any more questions, I suggest calling a pharmacist, there has been many recalls on drugs for children and they would know exactly how much and how often to give it to them)  Hope this helps.

It is fine to give a 18 month old cough syrup or decongestant. I have a 10 month old and I was told to give her 0.4ml and you can do it ever 4 to 6 hours. I would call the Dr.s office back and tell them you have no clue how much to give since your child is under 6 yrs of age so you can't really follow the directions on the bottle like you were told to.
