An opinion about multi-level marketing schemes (MLM)

A scheme can be defined as:

1. a plan, design, or program of action to be followed; project.

OR

2. an underhand plot; intrigue.

There are many direct sales businesses out there that follow a scheme (meaning a plan, design, or program) that utilize multi-level marketing to guide the business and all of its consultants. It can involve recruiting others to join a team to sell the same product or service. Sometimes it involves meeting a quota to earn commissions off of those recruited members and the more you sell, the more you earn. That is how sales marketing works.

It just makes good business sense to research any business or job to make sure it is legit and suits your individual needs and interests. Some people are looking for a job they can do from home that earns them an hourly wage. In this case an MLM may not be what you are looking for.

Others, however, may be looking for leadership, freedom to choose the salary they want to earn and other bonus perks such as free trips, jewelry, automobiles, etc. and the freedom of setting their own hours. For these folks direct sales/MLM businesses can be a perfect fit. You don't have to have a marketing, accounting or business degree (or any degree for that matter!) to have your own successful business. The corporate office of a direct sales/MLM type business has generally done that ground work for you providing marketing and training materials as well as sound business advice. There is usually a lot of support among team members and the corporate business as a whole. You are in business for yourself, but not by yourself. The social networking aspect can be quite rewarding in itself too!

In short, MLM is not necessarily a negative term or synonymous with a scam. In any business venture you have to research what you are getting into and for anything to be successful it does take a fair amount of effort, but doesn't anything that is worthwhile? The ultimate key to each person's individual success and happiness is finding that opportunity that fits his/her needs, interests and skills.

Your welcome! I saw on one of your threads that someone had asked what an MLM is. I liked the way you stated your response-that an MLM may not be for someone looking for a job that pays an hourly wage, but more of a business. (I am paraphrasing here, but I think that was the jist of your response.) It got me thinking about taking it a step further and explain what I know from my perspective. I think that was the original intent of this forum to educate each other about all of the great opportunities that are out there.

Thanks for sharing!

Michelle,

You are so right! I was even skeptical at first when I was introduced to direct sales, but after learning a little bit about how it works and it was indeed legit, I love being able to say I have my own business for a mere fraction of what it would cost to start one on my own or buy into a franchise. I think a lot of people get into certain businesses, buy up a ton of inventory and then can't sell it all. Most businesses do not even require carrying an inventory or meeting a quota. It does take a lot of work and discipline to be successful, but it can also be very motivating, energizing and rewarding after a short amount of consistent effort.

I just felt like posting my thoughts about it because I think direct sales/mlm businesses get a bad reputation when it just might be the perfect opportunity someone is looking for. Thanks for your comments!

I agree Angela. Unfortuneately MLM leaves a bad taste in a lot of people's mouth due to a few companies out their that were really up to no good. Most companies are legit and offer a way for someone to have their own business without having to do all the research to get started. I do think it is important for anyone looking to find the company that they can feel passionate about. These are not get rich quick schemes and it does take hardwork and determination.
