Hello, my name is Michelle and I just joined today!! Glad to be here.
I have just became a Independent Consultant for THIRTY ONE GIFTS about 3 weeks ago and it has just taken off like crazy!! These products sell themself.

Listings in online directories are often free, focus on the ones that service your local area. Get a facebook page, and join groups where people who need those services go.

Hey Christy & Shirley: There are nanny and child care website that you can do free advertising on for your daycare businesses. For a very short time a few years ago, I did that line of work myself, and found those sites worked best. If you plan to use craigslist.com, may I suggest responding to the childcare postings of people looking for home day care? These people are already looking for someone like you... you just need to set up an interview!

Hmmm...the car magnet is a good idea. I've been thinking about doing that. I tried the window decal but you can't see the information! I have an website business and find the facebook page and blog work well, as long as you keep up with it and post interesting things. Also, it helps to post on various other blogs that are related to what you are doing.

For those of you doing mailings, where do you get your mailing lists? I have tried this before for both my website and my freelance business and have had little success. I've both purchased lists and put them together organically using contacts and the chamber of commerce.

Depending on the business..you should really look into a local BNI chapter (www.bni.com) - there is a fee, but it does reap GREAT rewards. You need to have a website...work on a social media prescence (twitter, facebook, linkedin...myspace if your music focused). Make sure you have a website with a blog, yet don't mention specifics, like kids names etc unless you're allowed to. Check Google to make sure you're on the map. Use craigslist, create some flyers to use at local venues.

Realize, people do business with people they KNOW or to whom they were referred. Learn to talk to EVERYONE. Know your 10-second description of what you do. Know a 45-second one. Know a 2 minute one. Read self help books, reach out on FaceBook, Twitter and more. Get yourself set up on Google search. Put a car magnet on your vehicle. It will take time, but calls will start.

Christy, what age group are you trying to get? One of the things I did was to go to the school superintendents office and drop off a flyer and ask if I can post them in the schools. Another things is to ask if you can have flyers sent home in the school kids friday folders. Maybe that would work for you. We often get flyers in our kids folders about after school programs. If yours is one of those..perhaps that would help.

I have been trying to get the word out about my in home business, child care.I been hitting a wall to no interest. I have put it on craiglist and did flyer all over and the paper.Now I'm going to trying and open house, hope that will work.

Craigslist is a good way to get out there for free, local newspaper websites etc. You can google free advertising websites locally in your town and post away. To see a result though you need to post 50+ ads a day. What you will be exchanging is time for money. It takes longer to do free advertising, but it works.

To be successful with fliers you need to keep at it. Just think of how many times you've seen an ad locally or one on the tv/internet. How many times did you see that ad before you acted on it? Research shows that it's an average of seeing an ad 7 times before someone actually does something with it.

So go to the same places at least 6 times before you know what works. Before long you will find out what stores work and which don't.

Also you can use http://www.vistaprint.com/free and get free car magnets, free lawn signs (good for your neighborhood as many cars will have to pass by that sign on their way to go to drop their kids off...your house would be much more convenient!) and so many other things. You just pay for the super slow shipping and get it in like 7-10 days anyway. These are nice quality items. I get the sticky notes and leave them on gas stations with my biz info, leave them on bathroom mirrors at my grocery store. I have gotten many members that way! It's being consistant and leaving a papertrail everywhere you go that will mean the difference.

It can be very cheap to do or even free. But it works!

Same issue, but I am an infant care provider. I have a website and I am on the state Care for me program. I have put out a lot of posters too. I haven't received one call or email. I am on the reference list at Penquis Cap. I have been in business for nearly 11 years. Not sure what I am missing as my job doesn't have a "spiel" opportunity.

Kimberly and Christina...just KNOW that your efforts will work. Keep tweaking what you are doing until you find out what works. Know that if other people can make it work, so can you!

For me, I did have the same issue when I started my AmeriPlan® business. My team taught me what works, but I wasn't getting the results when I was doing what they said. So I knew it had to be the WAY I was doing it. I'll tell ya a short story of how I know any business can work:

For about 6 weeks I was averaging about 18 calls a week from people who found my flyers, postcards or anything else I was putting around town. I mean I was leaving a massive paper trail everywhere I went. But no one was enrolling and I was getting frustrated. My enroller told me that I was putting out enough stuff, so try tweaking what I was saying. (Most importantly make sure you both go to your sponsors and let them know what troubles you are having. If your sponsor is less than stellar, keep going upline until you find someone to help or ask a crossline consultant for help...even if that won't work many people made it in our industry with no help at all, they just figured it out. Just don't give up and it will happen...just a matter of time!) So I looked at that. When people would call about our discount programs I would ask them if they were looking at just for them or for their family, then ask them what they were in need of. So I would read down one of the brochures highlighting the main parts that they would want to know.

Looking back after I asked "Is this what you are looking for?" Many of them said yes. So then I asked for their email to send them more information. BIG MISTAKE!!!! Why did I need to give them more information when they just told me what I had was what they were looking for?! So I changed one thing...after they said it was what they were looking for instead of asking for their email, I asked them "So let's get you signed up so you can start taking advantage of these savings today!"

Changing that one sentance had me signing up 4 new members THAT DAY!!!! It was what got me to my first pin level of Regional Sales Director that day!!! That was really exciting! So it could be something as simple as that, or it could be other things too. Really examine your presentation and ask yourself if you would buy what you were selling if you were on the other side.

Go to your enroller or upline and ask them for help; do your presentation and ask them where you could do better. If your presentation is fine, maybe you don't have enough numbers coming in. To get results that matter, you need to be putting out 500 pieces of info out per week locally, or 50 ads a day online. You'll be kickin' some real business butt with those numbers :).
