What is the right age for letting your kid ride his bike around the block? I'm sure it depends on where you live, but lets say you live in a city of approximately 150,000 population and you live in what is considered a "fairly" safe neighborhood with very few cases of criminal activity. Seems like the neighbor's all let their kids ride all over the neighborhood by themselves, but I'm concerned.

My boys were riding their bikes around our neighbourhood by the time they were about 7.

Well, my kid is 7 but hasn't figured out how to ride without training wheels yet :P So not too much solo riding for her yet -- she's really not stable going around corners.
The thing you should be worried about, if you're going to worry about something, is not criminal activity but traffic. (I know you've probably heard stories about kidnappers and paedophiles pulling kids off bikes and the kids are never seen again, but those stories are almost always just ... stories.) I have no idea what it's like in such a small community, but I can tell you the only thing I really worry about with respect to DD being out and about on her own is that she's short (48"), and drivers might not see her -- and drivers around here are not careful and are not good about stopping at stop signs. (I've been nearly hit myself more than once while crossing, and believe me, it's not because I jaywalk.) However, if your neighbourhood is full of kids riding all over the place by themselves, chances are the drivers are more alert and it's probably pretty safe.
