Baby Eczema???

My 9 3/4 month old (lol) has been diagnosed with baby eczema. Lately, it has gotten so itchy that he scratches specific spots until they bleed. The doctor gave us Desonide (for the itching) and Mupirocin (antibiotic) for his scaly patches, but they don't help with the itching. It hurts me to watch him scratch himself - we've tried oatmeal baths and lotions. The worst patch is about the size of a half dollar on the top of his scalp. He scratches so hard he bleeds. He has a lot of hair and he pulls on it until it comes out. We live in Raleigh, NC. We added a humidifier to his room. PLEASE Any suggestions for the itching?

My son also has eczema, we use Melaleuca's Renew lotion. Just by using this we have been able to get rid of all the itchiness and also completely get rid of his medication they prescribed him! I hope this helps!!

oh and I forgot....we also stopped using fabric conditioner in the washing machine. if we keep on top of these things, his eczema barely bothers him.

Renew Lotion is the best thing on the Market. Better than any home remedy and better than any other lotion OTC. It works and it also comes in a body wash, hand wash and bath oil that I put in my son's bath every night. The other thing you MUST do is completely detoxify your home...from your cleaning products to your personal hygiene..including your personal stuff...as it ALL leaves nasty residues that leave a film on our bodies and transfer to baby/child. Let me know how I can help!!!!

The two things that work best to control my 2 year old son's eczema are:

1 - Finding and removing triggers in the diet (for my son this was milk).

2 - Bathing him in softened water. We live in a hard water area and even I used to itch after a bath or shower. I fitted a water softner and it is really effective at relieving itching and dryness after bathing. I know when it's time to top up the salt in the machine without looking because I start getting dry patches on my face when it's run out!

Try mama natures tiny troubles baby rescue cream for eczema or dry skin. It is made in england and they really seem to have this natural stuff in the bag. It cleared up my babies eczema within a week and it smells marvellous.

Renew Lotion.....it's the best stuff on the market....my baby had BAD eczema as well...and I had to completely convert my entire home to less harsh cleaners/soaps, etc....and then use a good lotion that did not break the bank!

I have always taken the NATURAL path.As I had both my girls at a birthing center. My 1st daughter was diagnosed with eczema at 18 months.I believe I've tried every thing in my power to make it better for her.I even got allergy test done for her at the age of 2.It turned out she was not allergic to anything....GREAT!!!

The one thing that has worked for me for the last 5 months is getting a book called Cure Child Eczema by Audrey Lynn.We saw a change in her after two months of reading this book. This is ONLY an E-book.But soooo worth reading. At first I had a hard time with everything it recommended to cut out of her diet. But it was EASY to do as it was all in my hands...she don't know any difference...and they get used to it!

She has little out breaks here and there at times. But never as bad as it used to be.

GOOD LUCK

: )

i know this is gonna sound strange but I have a daughter who is now 15 and she would get it so bad that she has some scares. but i had the most amazing doctor. and after we tried oatmeal baths and all the lotions and stuff and it did not work. Crisco cooking lard. After the invection is gone. Rub the baby down with it put on cotton pants and shirt. and but down to bed. a few days of this works. I know strange but we were in sc at the time and the heat and weather nothing worked but this. I hope it helps

Oh, also, ecxema is usually a sign of food allergies but most doctors won't test for them until they are older so try keeping a diary and see if he has worse flairs when he eats certain things.

arbonne (is a little pricy) is fantastic!!!!!!! that is what I used on my daughter when she was a baby. Her dermatologist now has her use cereve wash and lotion (super gentle but expensive) it doesn't burn skin or eyes. she also uses aveeno body wash for shampoo and aveeno lotion and that seems to help alot! we have steroid cream for really bad flares/ also coconut oil! it doesn't smell like coconut!

It could be something in his diet...is he on formula? Ask your doc about a possible food allergy.

I found a miracle lotion at the health food store: Shikai. There is a formula for children and adults. Expensive but worth it because it works amazingly.

My little girl was diagnosed with the same at four months and nothing from over the counter worked at all as they are all water based. I use an aromatherapy cream that has been specially blended to nourish the skin and it works within a few days. I definitely recommend getting in touch with an aromatherapist and seeing if they can blend something for you.

Hi, My baby boy suffered eczema badly too. I have stopped using soap at bath times, I use QV bath oil in his bath, and Aveno Green moistiuriser after the bath, try to feed as fresh as food as possible. I also find that senstitive washing powder is good, and I used to double rince and dry the clothes on the line instead of the dryer. And now that i have stopped breast feeding, I use goat milk formula. He has gone from a very itcy, red and dry skin to only having a small patch on his ankles now. He is so much better and happier, hope this info helps a little.

Eucerin was like a savior for both of my children (ages 5 & 3) they are both plauged by eczema. I you use the calming cream at least 3 times a day along with whatever steriod ointment or cream that the doctor prescribes your little one should start to see some relief within a couple of days. Also use dove soap, it has moisturizers in the soap. For the scalp my doctor had me use Selson Blue on my little boy when he was just 3 months old and that cleared his scalp up with in a week, ask your doctor before trying that.

My derm. gave my son Atarax, an antihistamine to stop the itching. It's a liquid...my son is 5 now. He still has the eczema, but claims that the medicine helps with the itching.

Yes. My daughter had EXACTLY the same thing- to the tee. I was at my wits end. First, stop ANY and ALL products with ANY fragrance in them- that includes laundry detergent, soap, lotion, etc. (no lavendar "put to sleep" items either)- anything scented agrravates their skin. Nothing with menthol- even if in a calming cream- it burns the areas they have scratched. Additionally, when they go in the oatmeal bath (continue this), rub him down with Cetaphil within SIXTY seconds of getting out of the bath. My daughers dermatologist also gave us an EpiCerum cream (non-steroid) that we rub on once a day (within 60 seconds of getting out of a bath/shower). This has brought down the red spots immensely and we don't even use the steroid cream anymore! Take my advice on the above and you will watch your little one thrive!

My son has eczema and mild asthma. Our pediatrician prescribed Desonate for the flair ups, and Atopiclair to prevent the flair ups once Desonate has done its job. We ended up seeing a pediatric pulmonologist for the asthma. What I did not know is that eczema is asthma of the skin. He told me to discontinue the Desonate and prescribed Elocon instead. We use the generic of that which is Mometasone Furoate and it works the best. Also like other moms stated, only use dye and perfume free detergents. If his skin gets a little dry we use Cetafil lotion. Hope this helps.

My daughter was born with it as well. One Dr told us to pull all of the carpet out of the house. Another said she was allergic to milk & to quit giving it to her (which is why her teeth grew in horribly). Another said she would need allergy shots once a week. One even said she was allergic to nickle. Disgusting. Bottom line, most Dr's do not know much about it. They just won't admit it. One of hers finally did. Several Dr's later and a small fortune on medications....no relief. We tried Aveeno, we tried sunlight. We tried everything..no help. She was 3 when she woke up in the middle of the night crying, blood all over her sheets. It is a helpless feeling indeed. I took her to the ER that night. They bandaged her from head to toe. By that point she had it over 85% of her body. I begged for prayers that week. The ER Doctor suggested trying Vaseline (non-fragranced of course). Thank God for that man! Eucerine, Aveeno, etc can all be helpfull but skin will become "addicted" and it does not work like Vaseline. Who would have thought? We started using triamcinilone when it "flared up". It is probably the best in my opinion... low enough steroid yet still effective. You have to be careful using steroids because it can cause sterility. My advise: NO FRAGRANCES OF ANY KIND (We use fragrance-free DOVE), VASELINE (again fragrance-free), & TRIAMCINILONE. Don't even give them chapstick if it has fragrance (yes, did that by mistake). Had I known we could nip it in the bud while she was a baby, she might have been able to grow out of it (by 14 I've been told), but she is now 16 and still has it with the occassional "flare up' during season changes. Though it has NEVER returned like it was since that ER visit because of the new regimine. She is living proof that natural remedies are God's healing hands. I feel your anguish girl. You've done nothing wrong & no baby deserves this. Please don't try all the medications. They often do more harm than good. And DO NOT let Dr's dictate what is best for your baby if your gut tells you otherwise. I am curious about the yogurt too. Couldn't hurt right?

Would also recommend Curel lotion(original formula). I thinkit moisturizes better than Aveeno. I started using it when my 26 yr old was an infant. It was the only lotion that didn't irritate his skin.

My 7 month old granddaughter also has eczema and was also scratching until she bled. My 26 yr old son had terrible breakouts and itching as an infant so I learned fom experience to avoid lotions and soaps with perfumes or other irritating ingredients. We use the Aveeno Baby line for skin and hair care. Her symptoms greatly improved, but she still had days when she scratched profusley. I remembered that the doctor advised me to use a hydrocortisone cream for my son;I was delighted to find that Aveeno 1% Hydrocortisone anti-itch cream. I would recommend calling your pediatrician to see if it's safe for your child. We use it only as needed. The direction state up to 3 times a day, but we haven't had to because 1-2 applications has solved the problem. Someone gave my daughter a Mustela bath time gift set. While I think they're great products, they're not a good idea for a baby with sensitive skin. Check the ingredients for any skin or hair care products. We discovered that some of the Mustela products contained Salicylic Acid, an ingredient in many acne care products which can cause peeling, or other skin irritation. I hope you find some relief for your little one. I know how hard it is to see your child in agony.

Your son could be my own from reading your post.
For the eczema...our dermatologist gave us a prescription for something called Protopic which is an ointment base of Tacrolimus.
It is specifically to treat eczema patches...cleared up our poor son's skin in about 2 weeks of twice a day application.
As well we put on a cream the doctor suggested called CeraVe which you can get at any RiteAid or pharmacy of the like.
It has no smell...unlike baby lotions or even natural products like Aveeno....but it is by far the BEST lotion ever. We put it day and night all over his body with only the Protopic on his problematic patches...it has cleared him up as well as keep the eczema at bay.

Unfortunately our son also has a ton of hair...and we have yet to fix the cradlecap/eczema problems there....we are still in the process of working on that with the Dermatologist.
But the above for the body worked like a charm....and yes....we tried E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G before getting the right combinations.

BTW - while everyone is different our Dermatologist told us to limit his bath time....as well as how frequently we wash his hair and body...because it only aggravates the eczema by leeching natural moisture from the body....that too has helped.

Hopefully your little man can get his skin conditions under control.
It IS very hard to watch them scratch....

Both of my boys had it BAD, did they ever say why? Lukas ended up being allergic to everything! Once we changed to "free" detergents and soaps and changed his diet it defenantly calmed down!

W eused to COVER Lukas in Aquafor (White tub with blue writing) and wrap him in ace bandages with tight jammies over them while he was home, or just the jammies if you don't mind the stains. It is kinda slick but it completly works!

Hi, I'm a little late with this discussion, but try all natural Shea Butter. One of the benefits of shea butter is that is relieves eczema. You can research the benefits of it and its all natural, no chemicals. You can also use it on the baby's scalp. My son has eczema as well, not as bad as your son, but it has just about cleared up.

I took my son to an allergist for his eczema. He was diagnosed at 3 months and is now 2 1/2.yr. Here is what works for us per the allergist during flare ups: soak in a bath for 1/2 hour until the skin gets pruned. Then wash with an antibacterial soap, he recommended Lever. rinse with clean water, pull out of the tub and put topical meds on. Then put in a wet long sleeved, long legged onsie or sleeper. then put a dry sleeper over it. I know it sounds uncomfortable but my son is fine with it. Leave both the wet and dry sleeper on overnight. Repeat this step each night until the flare up goes away. I use Vanicream (you can get it at the pharmacy) on days that I don't need the topical steroid. It's thick with no fragrance and works wonders. And, you don't need a prescription. It's about $15 and last about 3 months. My daughter is 3months old and also has eczema. We are doing the same for her and it's working wonders. Good luck!

Have you tried any of the Aveeno products. The Baby Soothing Bath Treatment, it is a natural cleanser and frangrance free. So it is not irritating to the baby's skin. Follow this with Baby Soothing Moisture Cream. This should help soften the skin and moisturize to prevent the itching.

Hope it works, as seeing them suffer can be so frustrating to moms.Remember the key is to keep the skin moisturized, the drier it gets the more the baby will stratch the itching.

Tea Tree Oil is what has really saved my now almost 5 year old. For years we battled with eczema - a little comb on his scalp would make it bleed. I was under the impression that it was craddle cap for the first 3 years...until I was given insight from a fellow mommy friend and confirmed with my allergist that eczema is what he has. Tips I have learned: It's winter...he doesn't need to have his hair washed every night - it removes oils his scalp needs. I use Aveeno Eczema Care on any body - exposed skin (Face, legs, etc.) When washing his hair I use a Tea Tree Shampoo, then after I follow up with a Tea Tree leave in conditioner. Best of luck to you!!!

my son had it since he was 3 months old. here is the list in order of how helpful it is to fight ezema when it gets angry.

1. hydrocortizone (the best one is from BJ club - generic brand) when it gets red
2. washing liquid - BabyGanics or other organic brand. Dreft was too harsh for us
3. 100% cotton clothes that touch the skin
4. lotion on his skin 2-3 times/day (I buy it in Russian store, i don't use Eucerin anymore it's not effective like russian baby lotion)
5. lotion on hands and feet at night.

unfortunately, he has to outgrouw it. Max is 15 months now and seems to get over

Both my children had it when they were younger. Yes, the hydro-cortisone works on it, but there were two big things that really helped with them. First, if their skin stayed moist (like wet socks, mitts, or them licking their lips a lot) they were guaranteed an outbreak. So we always made sure to keep their skin dry, especially in the winter time. Second, we watched what they ate. Foods that have a lot of acid (such as peaches, tomatoes, chocolate) would also bring on an outbreak. As much as my kids loved their peaches, tomatoes, ketchup, and such, we limited the amount they ate. Hope this helps as much as some of the other advice! Good luck!

My son also has eczema. We have tried a lot of different things with him. He really likes oatmeal baths...you can buy them at your local drug store and they are made for bathing instead of just dumping in oatmeal lol Just make sure you get the one that is ONLY oatmeal...no fragrance. You will find that a lot of the "baby stuff" has fragrance and will actually hurt them! My son got into just some regular lotion and he cried until he got in the bath and washed it off! Another tip is to make sure when you bathe him make it luke warm. (make sure you turn up the heat in the bathroom first) I also always smell everything before I buy it(you can smell that 'chemical smell' in them.) Some things to stay away from...BABY sunscreen, BABY lotion, BABY oil. It HURTS!!!! Things you can use...hydrocortizone(over the counter) mix a pea size amount with his lotion(we use Aveeno). This is getting too wordy so if you would like more info let me know!

My son has eczema and the best advise I have ever gotten for it (and after several expensive prescription meds and doctors) Never give him a hot bath as this will irritate it. Always a luke warm bath. When he gets out of the bath, within 3 minutes of towel drying, (the skin has to be moist) smother the areas that are broken out with Eucerin (it's a lotion you can get over the counter, it's in with the rest of the lotions... if you've never heard of it) and put pj's on that will cover the areas so the lotion doesn't get wiped off. Anyway, I did this when my son breaks out which is usually seasonal...and it works. Within a week it was completely gone. My sons inside elbows and back of his knees would look like someone took a razor blade to him. The first I did this, it was shocking the improvement by the next day. I was given this advice from an Allergist.

Hi, both of my children (10 and 5) had exzema as babies. It was as bad as you describe on your little one too. The doctor informed me he could prescribe those creams and anti biotics as well however, the more you use it, the more dry and dependent the skin becomes. He did tell me to use everything Dove. Body washes, shampoos, conditioners, bar soaps, everything. And, for the side dish, Aveeno cream with Hydrocortisone. I did as told and now, my children do not have this problem with the itching, patching, scabbing from the itching. It's a little pricey as you know the cost for Dove and the Aveeno cream, but it's worth it.
