Does anyone do medical billing and if so, do you work in office or home and how did you get started?

I am a single mom of 2 and work as a dental hygienist. I have been a hygienist for 19 years and I love it however, it is not the kind of job where I can get my kids to their extracurricular activities or attend school parties etc. I would love to find a job where I could work from home or in an office that would have flexible hours. I have been interested in medical billing for years and I would love to hear from anyone who does this or has any other ideas for me. Thanks!!

Hi! Im a certified medical coder and do billing from home and at a office. Most remote positions are coding and require certification plus years experience. Most remote positions require a quota, and your certifications CCS, CPC, RHIT, RHIA which are coding certifications. Check out AHIMA, AAPC sites for more info. Flexible schedules yes but you have to be aware of time zones and provide your schedule to a supervisor. I have my certification thru AHIMA and worked for military, county and private doctors for 9 years. I've also taught advanced coding at the technical school where I graduated from and have my BA in communications. This position I currently have is for a nice doctor that allows me to work from home due to the long commute to the clinic. Just to give you an idea, the program we use logs productivity, claims submissions, hours logged in and last acitivity. Its a great program that has everything in one... from scheduling, EHR, billing. I do take my babies to daycare and come home to work 830-430 like a regular office job. Medical billing itself doesnt require a certification but I havent really seen remote positions for billing only. Most remote positions are for facilites (inpatient) coding. The previous "biller" had no clue about coding and backlogged the clinic to 4 + months. I have almost caught up with billing for the clinic coding/billing 100 claims or up to 20,000 in charges a day. I have 3 girls at the office that post the payments and send appeals but usually you will be responsible for all that as well. the downside to working from home, that if i did use time away from my desk for personal reasons i got stuck making up time with my little ones at home. My hubby would have to watch them all day saturday so i could get any work done, even then my 2 yr old constantly wants me off the computer and i would often break away to help out with my 7 month old. Good luck and check out AHIMA, AAPC and job search engines for remote billing!
