The early morning is the only time I have to work out. I'm just too tired in the evenings. It starts my day better if I get in an early morning run. I usually get up and out the door by 4:30 a.m. There is a well-lit track at a middle school, one mile from my house, and I have a two-mile "concrete loop" in the neighborhood that is safe, well lit, for that early time. I either run to the track, do some miles there, and run home, or I do one or two "concrete loops" depending on my mood and level of exhaustion! I love the track miles, because I have 4 kids and I pray for each one of them during "their" lap. It helps me have my God time, pray for and think about my kids, and makes the miles go by faster.

Fit it in whenever you can! Excuses get you no where! I run or lift weights on my 1 hour lunch break. I go back to work sweaty sometimes, but throw on some deoderant and perfume and you won't stink anyone away. I also buy workout videos and subscribe to Shape magazine, they have great tips and easy exercises you can do at home. With me and my husband working out at home and being a positive role model with exercise, our kids have picked up on it. My son(11) and daughter(9) will run on the treadmill sometimes and will try some workout videos once in while. Our 21 month old has his own set of free weights (2lbs) and will do exercises with me. It makes it fun and some bonding time!

Dear Amy, Yes, yes and yes. It's your time. Once you get used to the early rise, you will love that time taken just for you. Whether you exercise in or out of the house, it's all good. I used to work as an RN. I have four kids under 11. I have a bad foot and have had 2 surgeries so can't work out and boy, do I miss those endorphins that go me going. I have a stair master/eliptical in my basement and a club where I would go too. If I had to work, I'd stay here and head to the basement at 5:45 a.m. and just stretch to wake up, pour my coffee with a tad of ice to cool it down and gulp that before getting my feet square on the foot things and off onto my 2 miles alone I'd go. I felt good all day. Sometimes around 2 at work I'd get tired, but just thinking of how I took that time for me and how great it made me feel that I did it, had the discipline to do it and got to read an adult magazine on the reading rack--it was Heaven for me by me. I highly advise this for any mom, whether you have one or eight kids. I was at a point where I'd lost all baby weight and was where I wanted to be size and weight wise, but getting to do something to get stress out that made me feel healthy, especially at the beginning of the day was just a treat. I'd give anything to not have all this new metal in my toes stopping me from starting my days like that. It was interesting too because feeling happy despite all the things we can feel unhappy about, caused others I worked with to ask how I did it; stayed happy with all the demands on me as a wife, mother and worker. I credited taking time out for myself. I said I chose to work out but if that's not someone's thing, I'd tell them even saying to the family that "I'm closed" and taking 30 minutes to yourself just to re-group will keep things sailing more smoothly. What's that saying? If momma ain't happy, nobody's happy? Make yourself happy and Do It! Andrea

Yes! My husband and I get up at 4:45am to workout. We do P90X 6 days/week. We have to leave the house around 7:15am, so this gives us an hour to workout, shower, get ready for work, eat breakfast and get the kids up for school/daycare. It works for us!

Until I sprained my ankle, I used to get up at 5, work out, and then my daughter would wake around 6. It's kind of inconvenient when she awakens early, but I like getting it done for the day. As I have been healing, I'm going for walks with her in the afternoon or some mornings now. Fortunately, my work schedule is flexible, so I can usually tweak it to suit me.

I do! I try for 0500 in the morning and go for a 20 km ride. It's the best time, especially summer. Sun has just risen, there's no traffic and the bike paths are empty. I ride three different routes and tend to see the same people at the same place each time. Funny how we get into our routines.

Sometimes I do. I prefer to work out around the hours of 3pm to 7pm. Pilates are a great energy booster in the morning though!

If I can get in an early morning workout, I do. It's so nice to get it over with! I run (outdoors or indoors), bike (indoors), or do the Biggest Loser Wii. Best of luck finding a system that works for you!

I wake up an hour earlier then I need to maybe two or three times a week, I make myself a nice breakfast smoothie, then I go for a 20 min run, nothing very strenuous. When I get back home I use tension bands and 3 to 5 pound weights on a work out mat for another 10 mins, then a good five min stretch! And I feel great ALL day!
Enjoy your workout! Thats KEY.

I sure do. I get up at 6:30am and at a mountain close to my home by 7am. I climb, then jog down and do a little resistance leg work.

Hi Amy, I get up to work out several mornings each week. I try for every other day. I get up at 5 am and exercise with Denise Austin on video. I find her very motivational and down to earth in attitude. When I'm finished I have a few minutes left to watch the news and weather before I have to wake the kids for school.

I recently started getting up to start working out on my spin bike by 6am. The days I do I feel refreshed, happy and ready to take on anything. The days I don't I wake up feeling crabby. I LOVED to sleep in but now I realize for myself, my husband and my kids I'm a much better Mommy and wife.

Since I can't get myself to go to bed early, there is no way I can get up and workout before going to work. What I do, when I get home from work at about 3:30, I feed my children get homework started and while they are doing homework I take a 30-45 min. nap. When I get up I check homework then if all is good I do my Insanity workout. It is insane but it's an awsome workout.

I need sleep too...and never saw myself as an early morning exercise kinda gal...However, after my last baby, the weight did not "fall off". When she was 8 months old, I set a goal to lose 20 lbs by her first birthday. I was shocked after seeing walking in a full length mirror. I wanted/needed to do something about it. I was able to accomplish it in 2.5 months. I have always been a very healthy eater, but cut back on my calories and committed to a routine. Having a set time (like a class) worked out better for me because I had to be there at a certain time..no excuses. I actually had more energy than before. I kept the 20 lbs off and am now 7 months pregnant and weigh about what I did 8 months after my daughter was born. I have continued to exercise throughout this pregnancy and this has been the best pregnancy out of three. Set a goal and create a schedule you can "try" for a couple of months. See how it goes...I definitely think you have to do an activity that you enjoy and understand that you are changing your lifestyle..not just going on a diet/exercise plan if you want the changes to last. Good luck!

I'm a mother of 4. 3 girls and 1 boy. Exercise is something I would love to do but, Its too impossible. Waking up late from being tired from running around doing chores and chasing everyone around.all day. Now if I was to add waking up at 4 in the morning. I am asking to crash until 12 in the afternoon. Thats not good!!!!!

Just curious about what time all of the early morning exerciser's go to bed at night?

I have an 8 month old who has a radar. It seems no matter how early I get up she wakes within 15 minutes, even if I don't make a sound! I used to be a devoted workout junkie, but since I have had her trying to fit in workouts while balancing the rest of life has been super difficult. I joined curves to do on my work days on lunch and try to take her for walks in evenings (when its not raining), but I need more cuz the weight isn't budging! I really want to try something for mornings but I am the type of person who needs at least 8 hours of sleep. Any suggestions?

I get up 4 or 5 mornings a week to do 30-45 minutes of yoga at 5 AM. It gives me a nice, quiet start to my day. I try to squeeze cardio in after work during the week. Exercise is the one thing I hold on to for myself!

This Single working Mom gets a morning workout in at 5 or 6 am. I am a personal trainer and group exercise instructor that has to workout for my job and to stay healthy. I sacrifice money as I have to pay someone to be with my 8 year old son and take him to school every morn. You have to just do it. Take care of you so that you can take care of them. If you do not do it you will pay with weight on your body, stress on your shoulders and poor health in the long run.

So great to see how many of you are doing this as well! Mon-Fri I get up at 4.45 am and head out for a 30-minute run with the dog while the rest of the family is still sleeping. On the weekends I usually sleep in a little and head out around 7 am (closer to 8 in the wintertime when it's sooooo dark here in arctic Scandinavia). I'd love to head for the gym in the mornings, but they only open at 7 on weekdays, which is way too late for me. But these morning runs are a really good way to start the day, it's real 'me' time, and the dog gets some exercise too.

I'm going to start trying to work out in the mornings tomorrow...I used to do it all the time, and it was nice because my husband would drop off our daughter at day care while I was working out and I'd pick her up right when I get out from work. It is a deffinate stress reliever...

I used to do that. I would use workout videos in the morning. Mostly fast-paced cardio. If you can get a good run in in the morning, it will make a difference in your day. I now do them after work at the gym. Gold's Gym has a child care center that my daughter loves. She's an only child and loves to be around other children, so this works for us. Plus sometimes she's my motivation. "Come on Mom, we're gonna miss all the fun at the gym" lol.

Yes I started getting up early today at 5 am because I am busy and I don't have a proper schedule on what time I get home and exercise will boost your adrenaline therefore you just have to see what works best for you. Morning workout works better for me cos then I have energy for the day to think and react......I feel tired after my day is over from work but I feel good still . My encouragement is I am doing this for me noone else!

I would like to but I have an hour commute so getting sleep is my main concern. However, if you have half an hour a day anytime, there are these great workouts that play all the time on FIT TV called Namaste Yoga. This is the most relaxing and useful workout I have found. As long as you do it at least three times a week, you will feel it. Just set your DVR to record the series and do it! If it's recorded, you can fast forward through the commercials and be done in 20 minutes.

Now that my son is older (6 1/2) we go for about an hour walk together in the evenings as well. It is great "mommy and son" time.

My son is now 19 months old and I weigh less now than before i got pregnant with him. I am not a morning person either, and it is harder than heck to drag my but out of bed each morning, but after I'm done I feel so much better the rest of the day and that's what makes me keep going each morning.

I work out every day. I try to do cardio in the mornings if husband is still home with little guy. If not, I will work out in the afternoons before picking him up from daycare. I have an arrangement at work that I don't leave for lunch (eat at my desk) so I can cut out early and go have my time and still pick him up at a regular time. Either way, baby doesn't really know any difference and I don't feel guilty. :)

Neither my hubby or I like it, but we get up at 5:30 to work out. We are doing P90X. Usually we get it all done before our baby wakes up, sometimes he wakes up when we do though. If it's not working in the morning, we FOR SURE do it in the eve, after he's asleep for the night around 8pm. I think it's easier in the morning - then it's done for the day. I'd much prefer getting up at 6:30-7!

I either go to the gym and take a class, or do the elliptical, or I do Slim In 6, I love these workouts because they are constantly changing from cardio,to lower body, to upper, to resistance bands, to abs, to yoga, it keeps it interesting.
